This is a garter snake that I observed slithering around Nisqually NWR.
It found an old, dried-up frog in the grass, kind of chewed on it for a while, then eventually dropped it.
I’m not sure where Alien Jerky got it’s start but I think it somehow evolved from the myth about aliens at the US Air Force secret base, Area 51 outside of the little community of Rachel, Nevada. True or not, this starship is under construction in Baker, California and should be completed sometime next year. I’m just amazed at what a little Alien Jerky can do!

Have you ever been on a road trip with people who had no interest in photography or beef jerky. That is the situation I found myself in on the way to North Carolina for Thanksgiving.
I debated whether to even post this photo because it is so terrible, but since it isn’t my fault I decided to do it anyway.
All of you will recognize the various mistakes here:
1. Taking the photo through the van window.
2. Having a dirty van window.
3. Flares and bright glints off the chrome.
4. Photo too dark and not exposed correctly.
5. Poor composition.
The first reason it is not my fault is because even though it was a cold, windy day, I kept opening the side van window to get a shot of houses, ruins, signs, etc. if we were going over 50 MPH the high wind would blow the van a bit to the side. Also, I guess the cold blast of air was unpleasant because people kept yelling at me to close the window. I tried a few more times, but then had to compensate by taking photos through the glass because the passengers were getting downright rude.
When you take photos through a window from a moving vehicle, you have to have a knowledge of algebra and geometry to rapidly calculate where to aim the camera at 50 MPH to get your subject in the shot. Yeah, I don’t have that knowledge.
The second reason it is not my fault is because the other people would not stop for me to take a photo, even though I asked (well shrieked) “Stop the car!” Just pull into that parking lot! Come on, I want to get a picture of that sign.”
The response. “Are you kidding? No. We are already past it.”
“Then can we go to the Beef Jerky store?”
Again the answer was, “No-one even likes beef jerky.”
I told them that I did and it was only 4 miles out of our way.
Alas, no jerky for me ... well I had my family :)))

I had a request to show the results of the previous shot of ingredients for beef jerky, so here it is. Just over 1 Kg of beef reduced to less than 1/2 Kg. But it still makes a nice pile of snack food.Still trying to dial in this recipe, this batch was supposed to be hot, but wasn't, and it could have used more salt (my previous batch was way too salty so I reduced the amount). So somewhere in between...
BTW, the plate is a plastic Christmas plate we use for serving snacks, etc that we have not put away yet.
