I had an amazing trip to Sattal, Uttarakhand, India with my friend Munish Kaushik(www.flickr.com/photos/munishk/). For the last couple of years, Munish has been focusing on photographing mostly songbirds in beautiful settings and planned the whole trip. We visited Prabhu's Bird Hide (www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100064126711089 prabhuhazara@gmail.com) and the surrounding forest area. I cannot thank Prabhu enough for allowing us exclusive access to his super productive hide, a highly recommended bird photography hide for mountain birds, and giving us freedom to make a lot of changes there. Prabhu put together an amazing team, Jeevan (www.instagram.com/jeevankayaker/?hl=en) a knowledgeable and super helpful guide and Ravi with superb mountain driving skills and enthusiasm for birds. Prabhu’s friend and partner, Nitesh Sati (www.facebook.com/nitesh.sati.18) with his wife Anushree Joshi (www.facebook.com/anushree.joshi.14) run the lodging Happy Owls Homestay “https://abnb.me/tYm04YDQjqb)” and local logistics. Both are super hosts, experienced Mountain & Treking Guides, and nature lovers. They made our stay super comfortable, served a variety of delicious and hygienic food and provided phenomenal costumer service with every detail. They went above and beyond in providing us with very personalized care to meet our every need. We photographed more that 35 species there during our short stay. Here is the Ultramarine flycatcher. Stay tune for more species to come from Munish and I.

Vaswati Misra
Vaswati’s love for dance began as a young child of 7, she received training first under the tutelage of Smt Reba Vidyarthi and then had the good fortune to be groomed by the great kathak maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj. An immensely talented dancer by the age of ten Vaswati was already dancing on stage. Performing both as a soloist as well as with her husband, dancer Krishan Mohan Misra she was acclaimed both for her command over the technique of the dance form as well as her expressieve qualities.
A successful choreographer and a soloist of repute Vaswati performed in prestigious festivals like Baba Allaudin Khan Samaroh, Bindadin Kathak Mahotsav, Khajuraho, Orchha Mahotsava, Nishagandhi Festival, Sangeet Natak Akademi’s 50th celebration, Qutub Festival and travelled to U.S.A, Japan, South Africa, latin America, the Middle East, Mexico and entire Europe.
In 1979 Vaswati joined the Sriram Bhartiya Kala Kendra as a teacher and was there for eight years, in 1989 she held the post of Kathak Guru at the Kathak Kendra, New Delhi was there again for eight years, in 1997 she resigned from Kathak Kendra and two years later, combining her passion for performance and education she set up an arts education centre the Pandit Shambhu Maharaj Kathak Academy as the educational wing of Dhwani, continued to grow with additions of a repertory and Zaroorat, a school for the underprivileged.
Dhwani Group
Dhwani is a cultural organization founded by leading proponents of Kathak, Shri Krishan Mohan Misra and Vaswati Misra in 1984.
It seeks to preserve and promote the performing and fine arts traditions of India by organizing choreographed dance, theatrical and musical performances of the highest caliber.
Trained under the auspices of the maestro- Pt Birju Maharaj himself, Vaswati Misra has perfected the technique and grammar of Kathak through her career spanning 40 years. Her choreographed pieces have been widely acclaimed by audiences and connoisseurs across the globe. Over the years, Vaswati Misra and Dhwani has built a reputation for collaborating with a diverse profile of artists and performers- from indigenous and folk artists to children from challenging backgrounds, from the greatest maestros, writers and actors of our times to young debutants- many of whom have been nurtured into accomplished performers in their own right.
Each performance by Dhwani is crafted to perfect the interpretation of sound and beat, the balance of strong yet lyrical body movements, powerful foot-work and subtle expressions. They are unique in their highly contemporary and aesthetic interpretation of a very traditional form.
Dhwani is empanelled with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, the Ministry of Culture and CID UNESCO.
Concept Note
Founded by dancer and choreographer, Vaswati Misra, The DHwani Repertory is made up of dancers whose versatility, virtuosity and dynamic movement quality, owes itself to the training imparted by Vaswati Misra. Their performances resonate with a long history of cultural traditions and are the result of explorations into elements that make Kathak the dance form that it is. Herself, an accomplished artiste of the Lucknow Gharana of Kathak, Vaswati finds inspiration for her choreography within the structural boundaries of Kathak as it has grown and developed over the countries.
Concepts like Bhaav bataana (the expression of a mood, seated on stage) Padhant, (where the mood and feeling inherent in mnemonic syllables are explored) or forms based on traditional musical genres like gats, taraaanaas and kavits are recreated in a matter that often fuse the perceived boundaries between dance and music, the traditional and the contemporary.
At the Ananya Dance Festival, The Dhwani Repertory will present an eclectic selection of some of its shorter works as well as some excerpts from production like Jeevan and Kalpataru.

Pronounced "Lewisburg" by its largely English-speaking population, the present community has been identified by slightly different spellings over the years by both locals and visitors. The town was originally spelled Louisburg and several companies, including the Sydney and Louisburg Railway adopted this spelling. On 6 April 1966, the Nova Scotia House of Assembly passed "An Act to Change the Name of the Town of Louisburg" which resulted in the town changing its official name to the original French spelling Louisbourg.

First off... I like creating tension. The tension created by the man looking out of the frame and not being on the same plane as the main subject appeals to me.
This couple contacts me and says that they're getting married in December. They want to know if I'll do a couple's shoot. I decline... not really my thing. They are very persistent though and tell me how much they admire my photography. I finally tell them to come in for individual quick sessions. At the end of their individual sessions I told them we would "try" a few shots of the couple but stated very clearly that they shouldn't expect anything.
I thought about it for a couple of days. How can I make this different? I don't want them to be holding hands or gazing into each other's eyes... let the other photogs do that mess.
I had this idea to integrate my close-up headshot style into their shoot. I told Jeevan to stand in the back and look out of frame. I got Vinnie to do her thing with the camera. I even told them that Jeevan would be out of focus. They were all for it.
We took a few frames and when they looked at them they were floored. They enjoyed just how different it was. They stated that in India (where they'll wed) they will have to do silly stuff... like holding hands and gazing into each other's eyes. They ended up extremely happy.

Udavum Karangal in Thiruverkadu is home to 2000 residents. This includes 150 children who are mentally ill. While many such children are abandoned and aren’t given proper education, special educators strongly believe that they can be taught several skills that will help them in their everyday lives. To cater to the needs of these children and those living in the Thiruverkadu neighbourhood, the Jeevan School for Special Children was established.
The Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram (KYM), offers yoga lessons to these special children at the Jeevan School, on an ongoing basis, as part of its philanthropic endeavor, the KYM Mitra. Yoga is one among the many activities that these children are exposed to, to facilitate their learning and development.
KYM Mitra is the philanthropic wing of the KYM, founded by Kausthub Desikachar, that takes yoga to the socially and economically under privileged. Commencing its operations in the year 2001, the KYM Mitra, has till date involved itself in 60 projects throughout Tamilnadu, and has influenced the lives of thousands of people through yoga.
Here are some images from the work done through the yoga project.
