@ Kahuku Aquaponds, Kahuku, O'ahu, Hawai'i

The mongoose was introduced in Hawaii in the late 1800s to control the rats. However, they instead hunted native birds and bird eggs. They are a major threat to the native birds in Hawaii.

Striated Heron (Butorides striata). Subspecies B.s. javanicus is a resident of Sri Lanka. Frequents brakish swamps and mangroves in lowlands . Belongs to Ardeidae family.

This shows how large (or small) a mouse-deer really is!

Wikipedia: Chevrotains, or mouse-deer, are diminutive, even-toed ungulates that make up the family Tragulidae, and are the only living members of the infraorder Tragulina. The 10 extant species are placed in three genera, but several species also are known only from fossils. The extant species are found in forests in South and Southeast Asia; a single species, the water chevrotain, is found in the rainforests of Central and West Africa. In November 2019, conservation scientists announced that they had photographed silver-backed chevrotains (Tragulus versicolor) in a Vietnamese forest for the first time since the last confirmed sightings in 1990.

Conservation status: Threatened

Taken in Gardens by the Bay, in Singapore.

I walked down to the ocean

Sat on the cold hard stones

Saw the seabirds fishing and the sunlight glistening

Saw the daylight leaving....

Thought back to all the things I've seen

The people I know and the places I've been

The city skylines and the fields of green

It's a wonder I've made it home

All my life I've been chasing setting suns

I'm getting old and tired of chasing setting suns

Taken in Sungei Buloh wetlands in Singapore.

Found in the Indian subcontinent, China, mainland Southeast Asia to Indonesia. Usually in Freshwater wetlands, mangroves and sometimes mudflats.

Large bird with mostly horn-coloured bill, pale forehead, vinous-tinged head-sides (redder when breeding), yellowish neck, glossy black upperparts, white underparts and dark greyish legs. Shows all blackish wings with white patch on inner underwing coverts in flight.

A lesser adjutant scanning the waterhole beneath its lofty perch. These birds are sight feeders, taking live fish, frogs, reptiles, large invertebrates, rodents and small mammals. Unlike the related greater adjutant, this species rarely feeds on carrion. Photographed in Yala National Park, Sri Lanka. Javan Myna has a Conservation Status under the IUCN of Vulnerable www.iucnredlist.org/species/103871334/176499647

Javan Myna is native to the Indonesian islands of Java and Bali, and the wild population is in trouble there. The IUCN gave an estimate of fewer than 10,000 mature individuals in a 2020 assessment. Ironically, the species is doing well in some other places where it has been introduced, including Singapore, Malaysia, and Taiwan (where I saw it). Javan Myna has a bright yellow bill (as compared with the horn colour of the bill in Crested Myna ). Javan Myna also has a white panel on the wings {more easily seen in this species) and a crest (albeit smaller than that of Crested Myna). I saw this species on all four of my birding days in Taiwan.

Quick moving and not often exposed in the open, a mongoose cautiously forages in the leaf litter. The small Asian mongoose or Javan mongoose (Herpestes javanicus) was introduced to sugar plantations in the Caribbean in 1872 and in Hawaii in 1883 with the intent of reducing the rat population. Many consider them cute, but with no natural predators in Hawaii, they are invasive and detrimental for native species, especially ground nesting birds. Venerated or reviled, they have a long history in literature and mythology.

Standing on its hind legs this mongoose pokes its head above the tall grass to survey the territory for food, mates, and intruders. Despite their apparent cuteness and extensive folklore, in Hawaii mongooses are an introduced opportunistic omnivore, and are a threat to indigenous wildlife, especially ground nesting birds. Contrary to described behavior, I have also seen one climb a tree in search of food. Interesting mammals that are fun to observe, but they were imported inappropriately into the island ecosystem, through no fault of their own.

A small outcrop of reef covered mainly with an orange encrusting sponge. The underside is occupied by a Giant Moray - Gymnothorax javanicus

[Endangered] This bulky stork is the largest bird on the island. Rather rare resident in wetlands of forested areas in dry lowlands. Looking rather ungainly and grotesque with its bare face, Lesser Adjutant is unlikely to be confused with any other stork. The lesser adjutant stalks around wetlands feeding mainly on fish, frogs, reptiles, large invertebrates, rodents, small mammals and rarely carrion.

I think it was just asking the local Cleaner wrasse for its service rather than being aggressive towards me.

Very common bird in Singapore. You'll find them walking at almost every place in the island :)

Gymnothorax javanicus on a night dive, Marsa Alam, Egypt

Brought from India in 1883 to unsuccessfully reduce the rat population in sugar cane fields, the mongoose is common on several of the main Hawaiian Islands. An opportunistic omnivore, mongooses are a threat to indigenous wildlife, especially ground nesting birds. Contrary to described behavior, I have also seen one climb a tree in search of food. But they can also be entertainingly cute to observe and have an extensive folklore.
