Wrote a little java program to use Launchpad to sequence anything midi. In this video I'm running Propellerhead Reason/Record Subtractor. It creates a midi device, so you can sequence anything that takes midi

- adjust exposure value
- highlight and shadow recovery
I didn't do any other process like sharpening.
And then I use geotag-open source java program to tag the location.
I was back in Reading today for the last part of my Java Programming course, and took the opportunity to pose against the magnificent Maiwand Memorial in Forbury Gardens.
The memorial commemorates the 329 men of the 66th Foot (later Royal Berkshires) who died at the Battle of Maiwand in 1880. More details here.
The Battle of Maiwand is important to Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts (of which I am one), as it was in this action that Dr Watson received the wound that invalided him out of the army and led to him taking up lodgings with Great Detective. The rest is history ...
I did a much better version of this shot on Wednesday, but chose to abandon it in favour of the Vampire Bunny one, as it was Hallowe'en. It was overcast on Wednesday, so there was no glare from the sun. I'l probably post it to the Reject pool over the weekend, though.

This is a gentle disagreement as to whose turn it might be to have a go at the whale carcass.
The video was taken from a bobbing Zodiac using a Panasonic TZ100. The raw version had rather a lot of jiggle! So I extracted a clip of 1000 frames using ffmpeg. Then I identified some features and wrote Java code that tracked them through the sequence of images. I made a backdrop by using images where4 the camera was pointing extremely left, right, up and down, so that I could paste individial frames onto that and have each padded out with the background pebbles. Then another Java program clipped smaller frames from within the full sequence positioned so as to track the bear action. Finally ffmpeg converts back to video and puts back the sound-track (which is moduly camera clicks, but has some growls). I couls spend a LOT more time tidying this up, but compared to the somewhat jerky original this is still a decent improvement, and not everybody has video of bears facing off. I thinkj that Lucy, who was wielding the TZ100, should be rather please with this! A am rather pleased with how much I have been able to stabilise it - the stabilization capabilities in various video editors that I tried might cope with the normal shake of hand-held video but really struggled with a sequence taken from a boat in the waves!

- Day 253 of 366 -
«All day working with it, but everything looks fine now.
This morning I've finished installing everything I need in my laptop. And this afternoon I've started with my course of JAVA programming. It's really hard to start with a new language by yourself, and even harder if you only know languages with a simple way of working with variables and functions... This is being completely different.»
In the immortal words of Dave Barry (and, possibly, Moses), I am not making this up.
Last year we went to a white elephant gift exchange and came home with this awesome fish sculpture thing. We put M&M's in it for a while but they ran out. (You wouldn't expect that from a miraculous fish like this one, but I'm getting ahead of myself.) Anyway most of the time it just sat around on the counter.
Pretty much unrelated to that, last September I decided to give up drinking sodas. That's when I also decided to take up drinking coffee. Up until then I was a non-coffee drinker. We didn't even own a coffee maker but now we have this cool little Keurig number. On a whim, I decided to put some of our K-cups into the fish so guests could see what kind of selection we had.
Jarring topic shift: at work I develop a lot of software in C++. But we have some applications written in Java that need support so I've been trying to learn some of the Java Enterprise Edition technology.
At the heart of Java EE, is the concept of an Application Server. This is like a web server but instead of web pages, it hosts Java programs called servlets and other things called Beans and whatnot. I'm still a little fuzzy on all that.
But here's the thing. There are lots of different Application Servers available. One commonly used AS is named Glassfish and since it is free from Oracle with the Java EE developer tools, it's the one that I'm trying to use first.
So, to summarize, I've just learned in the past week that Glassfish is a thing that contains and serves Java objects. But for months already I've had a glass fish on my counter that contains and serves java objects.
I feel that God has just stepped out from wherever He's been watching me, doubled over laughing and enigmatically walked away.
I'm not quite sure what this is supposed to mean but I suspect we're supposed to wipe out the Hittites and take their cities. Who's with me?

Tiles are placed using the image that fits the region to which it is mapped best, subject to the condition that there must be at least two tiles separating an image from a copy of itself, with the portions of the image with the least variability in color having priority in getting tile images assigned to them.

University professors developed a team-based educational project using satellite images of Deepwater Horizon surface slicks to introduce first-year computer science students to socially-relevant problem solving. The professors guided students in designing and applying an algorithm to address an open-ended problem of outlining oil contaminated areas. The project’s use of realistic scenarios highlighted the societal contributions of computing careers.

This applet implements a 'genetic programming' algorithm. The java program takes as input a table of result and a list of expected numbers. Top-Left: table of data used for input. Last columns are: expected result, normalized expected result, normalized computed result, fitness (|computed-expected|). Top-Right: nine steps of the evolution process. In each setp, on the X axis are displayed the expected values and the comuted values (calculated from the evolving methematical function) are on the Y axis. The fitness is diplayed. Bottom-Left: parameters,"weight" of each function. Bottom-Right: The definition of the current best curve.
