The former Anchor Line shipping office building, St Vincent Place, Glasgow. Another magnificent Glasgow building by James Miller, in my opinion an underrated architect compared to Macintosh and Alexander Thomson (ask l100 people to name a famous architect, how many would say ‘James Miller’ #jamesmillerarchitect #glasgowarchitecture #scottisharchitecture #glasgow #glasgowcity #glasgowcitycentre #architect #shippingoffice #shipping #anchorline #anchorlineglasgow

When the Glasgow Central Railway came tunnelling through the West End in the 1890s, they commissioned architect James Miller to design new stations at Kelvinbridge and the Botanic Gardens. Both were destroyed by fire seventy years later, and the little Kelvinbridge Station is now mostly forgotten, overshadowed as it was by Miller’s grandiose Caledonian Mansions on Great Western Road. The brick and sandstone Kelvinbridge Stationhouse led to a staircase accessing the glazed platforms at river level.

Beith Street was created in the 1970s as tenements were demolished and local roads realigned. At its west end stand the burgh's third fire station. Built in 1906 by prominent Glasgow architect James Miller, the red brick firehouse was later extended to provide housing for firemen and their families. The tall campanile behind was used to dry fire hoses. By 1985 the fire station was deemed redundant and the building was converted into flats by Meadowside and Thornwood Housing Association.

Glasgow architect James Miller launched his prolific career by winning the competition for Belmont Parish Church in 1892. Miller, then working in the Engineering Department of the Caledonian Railway Company, based his design on John J Burnet's Barony Church, with delicate traceried windows in red sandstone. In 1952, the building was purchased by the Laurel Bank School for Girls in Lilybank Terrace, and the congregation merged with Hillhead Parish Church on Observatory Road. For nearly fifty years the old church served as the school's assembly, games and dining hall.

The church is now (2020) being converted to housing.

Often described in architectural guides as an annexe to the Caledonian Railway’s Central Hotel, Caledonian Mansions was actually built as a speculative block of flats and shops to generate revenue for the company. Standing with its elegant rear facade backing onto the railway’s air shaft, Caledonian Mansions is a riot of arts & crafts detailing, with many Scottish references. The busy facades and complex roofscape contains a panoply of domes, turrets, oriels and dormers. The flats are accessed by a deeply projecting walkway on the south facade.
