Photographing raptors like this Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) in rehabilitation centers offers a unique glimpse into the vital work being done to protect these majestic birds. Raptors, known for their keen eyesight and powerful hunting skills, often face threats from habitat loss, poisoning, and injury.
Rehabilitation plays a crucial role in their conservation. When raptors are injured or orphaned, rehabilitation centers provide medical care, nutrition, and a safe environment for recovery. This process not only helps individual birds regain their strength and health but also contributes to the overall population by allowing them to return to the wild.
Capturing images of these birds during rehabilitation can raise awareness about their challenges and the importance of conservation efforts. Photographers can showcase their beauty and resilience, inspiring others to support wildlife rehabilitation initiatives. By highlighting these efforts, we can foster a greater appreciation for raptors and the ecosystems they inhabit.

Meet Josephine, the Great Horned Owl at Flat Rock Brook Nature Center in Englewood, NJ. As part of the raptor aviary, she joins other non-releasable species, including a Screech Owl and a Red-tailed Hawk, serving as ambassadors for their kind in educational programs that highlight the importance of wildlife conservation.
Josephine arrived in March 2014 from Kent, Washington, as a juvenile owl. Due to her early exposure to humans, she became imprinted and does not exhibit typical wild behaviors. Her identity as a female was confirmed in the spring of 2016 when she laid her first eggs, further enhancing her role in educational outreach.
Visitors can find Josephine in the second mew from the right in the aviary. While observing her, look for her favorite “toys” scattered on the ground, showcasing her playful personality. She is particularly engaging during educational programs, inspiring others to learn about the conservation of wildlife.
To support the care of Josephine and the other raptors, symbolic raptor adoptions are available, helping to cover costs such as veterinary check-ups, fresh food, and enrichment activities.
Flat Rock Brook Nature Center invites everyone to visit and discover more about Josephine and her fellow raptors, and to learn about their vital roles in the ecosystem.
