Captured at the iconic Griffith Observatory, this image features the statue of James Dean with the Hollywood Sign rising in the background - two symbols eternally linked by cinema history. Dean’s unforgettable role in Rebel Without a Cause (1955) was filmed on location here, turning the observatory into a backdrop for one of the most poignant portrayals of youthful rebellion in American film. So strange,so decayed,so yellow,but so cool.
I had a lot of fun with this and couldn't decide which Overprocessed photo to submit.
This is a composite of The River Street Inn in Savannah, Georgia; portraits of Marilyn Monroe and James Dean from the Malt Shoppe in Stowe, Vt, a faceless mannequin from Stowe; and the cover album portrait of Joni Mitchell taken in the Woodstock Museum in Bethel, NY.
The Skeleton, guarding the Exit, was shot at Industry City in Brooklyn around Halloween.
I played around with Hue and Saturation, and applied a mild Watercolor effect. It was nice to let my imagination run wild without regard to proper color, detail, or exposure.

The theater is undergoing some major renovations both inside and outside. The murals of famous actors is a big and noticeable change that I wasn't aware of until I saw some shots from my friend, "WestbyMidwest". We picked a sunny day with a blue cloud filled sky to try to get some shots. Unfortunately, by the time we got there, most of the clouds had moved on. Getting a really great shot was next to impossible as the workmen's trucks blocked one angle and trees and poles blocked others. I wanted to get a shot that included the marquee side with Rosemary Clooney's image. In order to do that, I had to risk life and limb by crossing the street during rush hour and take this shot from the island. Unfortunately small trees block Sidney Poitier, James Dean and John Wayne. Fortunately it's Winter time, so there were no leaves on the trees.
From my early youth, this is a theater that I frequented regularly. More recently I've been there for wedding receptions and other events. Ah, the memories!

James Dean loved racing cars and he and his brand-new, $7000 Porsche Spyder convertible were on their way to a race in Salinas, 90 miles south of San Francisco. At 5:45 PM on September 30, 1955, the 24-year-old actor was killed when the Porsche hit a Ford Tudor sedan at an intersection in Cholame, California. The driver of the other car, 23-year-old California Polytechnic State University student Donald Turnupseed, was dazed but mostly uninjured. Dean’s passenger, German Porsche mechanic Rolf Wutherich was badly injured but survived.
Only one of Dean’s movies, “East of Eden,” had been released at the time of his death (“Rebel Without a Cause” and “Giant” opened shortly afterward), but he was already on his way to superstardom – and the crash made him a legend.

The photo of James Dean with his Porsche was taken at a gas station in Sherman Oaks the afternoon he was killed. It was taken by Jimmy's friend Sanford Roth who was following Jimmy to Salinas in a different car. The gas station on Ventura Blvd. is now a car wash and a flower shop called "A Touch of Romance."

Part of my "It's a Gas" documentation of old gas stations. Some are abandoned, some repurposed, and few remain in operation. It's very likely that James Dean gassed up at this station back in the 1950's. Summitville is only a few miles south of Fairmount, where he lived with his uncle during his high school days.

My son sent me this a few days ago from Facebook. I have no idea who took it, but most likely one of the local newspapers at the time. This was the scene at the premiere of the movie documentary 'The James Dean Story' in August 1957. Apparently they also had a parade before the premiere. From Internet Movie Database-"This documentary, which was undertaken soon after James Dean's death, looks at Dean's life through the use of still photographs with narration, and interviews with many of the people involved in his short life. Interviewees include the aunt and uncle who raised him after his mother's death (when James was 9), his fraternal grandparents, a cabdriver friend in New York City, and the owner of his favorite restaurant in Los Angeles. James's father, who was alive when the film was made, does not get a single mention."

Just today, Leica has brought into the market, again, the M6 model. Leica manufactured this camera from 1984 to 2001. In orfer to celebrate this milestone in photography, I'm going to upload some pictures taken with my M6.
From my notes, I took this picture on 13h, February, 2006. The Spanish young man remembered me sort of a James Dean look-alike, maybe living his live as Rebel without a Cause, so I grabbed my M6 fast and had the opportunity to take the picture.
