Jal Mahal @ PawaPuri

Bihar, India

Jal Mahal (meaning "Water Palace") is a palace located in the middle of the Man Sagar Lake in Jaipur city, the capital of the state of Rajasthan, India. The palace and the lake around it were renovated and enlarged in the 18th century by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Amber.

The Jal Mahal palace has got an eye-popping makeover. Traditional boat-makers from Vrindavan have crafted the Rajput style wooden boats. A gentle splashing of oars on the clear lake waters takes you to Jal Mahal. You move past decorated hallways and chambers on the first floor to climb all the way up to the fragrant Chameli Bagh. Across the lake, you can view the Aravalli hills, dotted with temples and ancient forts, and on the other side, bustling Jaipur. The most remarkable change is in the lake itself. The drains were diverted, two million tonnes of toxic silt were dredged from the bottom, increasing its depth by over a metre, a water treatment system was developed, local vegetation and fish reintroduced, the surrounding wetlands regenerated and five nesting islands created to attract migratory birds.

From my slide archives: The Jal Mahal ("Water Palace" built in 1699) in the middle of Man Sagar Lake was in bad repair and almost a ruin when I visited Jaipur in 1988 and took this sunrise photograph. Maybe the decay added to the mystery - a hauntingly beautiful apparition in the morning mists. In 2000 restoration works started and have been concluded and restored the palace to former glory.

The picture was originally photographed on Fuji Chrome film with my Nikon FE2 camera and 130mm lens. I photographed the slide bracketing it with a Nikon D850 camera and enhanced the picture in Lightroom, Photoshop, and Topaz.

The well lit eye catching Jal Mahal looks like a sparkling solitaire in the middle of the Man Sagar lake. The surrounding Nahargarh hills, dotted with lights from temples, look like its crown. All this reflects in the water of the lake give it a mesmerizing touch!

The astonishingly beautiful Jal Mahal (Water Palace) located in the middle of Man Sagar lake, surrounded by Aravallis is a treat for the eyes. This shot captures the beauty of the light colored stone walls of the Jal Mahal contrasting to the deep blue water of the lake with egrets and other birds sitting on the rocks in the lake, giving pleasure to the beholder.

Jaipur, India. It would be much prettier if capture in night lights, I always love the glow of flood lights on buildings.

It was very hot at 43 plus degrees Celsius and our coach did not even stop. I took a quick snap from the window of our moving vehicle.

Looks like a floating palace to me.

While man has busy building permanent formations in monuments and structures, nature has had its constant too; in change...

The Spot-billed duck peacefully paddling on the blue waters of Man Sagar lake in Jaipur oblivious of it being captured through the lens on a camera. The reflection of blue sky and the yellow Jal Mahal on the ripples of water add a magical touch to the shot!

Jal Mahal (The Lake Palace), built in 1699, is one of the main attractions in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India

A shot taken by the lake in moon light.

Man Sagar Lake is an artificial lake, situated in Jaipur, the capital city of the state of Rajasthan in India. It is named after Raja Man Singh, the then ruler of Amer, who constructed it in c. 1610 by damming the Dravyavati river. The Jal Mahal is situated in the middle of the lake.
