The whole scene was in sync with the republic day. The gorgeous saffron sky and the lush green fields. The wheel (Ashoka Chakra) in the middle completed the look of our great tricolor. Happy Republic Day!

This Amar Jawan Jyoti is located near Nathula pass (14000 ft) in Indian state of sikkim. This is replica of the the original structure erected at New Delhi. It was constructed after the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 to commemorate the martyred and unknown soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces who died during the war. The pedestal is bound by four urns, one of which holds the eternal flame.

Greetings to all Indians, wherever they are…!! Aug 15th- our I- Day!!

Salute to my motherland (vande mataram) on 61st Republic_Day!!! Am so proud to be an Indian...here's a beautiful poem by Rabindranath Tagore to wish you all a Happy Republic Day, my friends :)

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high

Where knowledge is free

Where the world has not been broken up into fragments

By narrow domestic walls

Where words come out from the depth of truth

Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection

Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way

Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit

Where the mind is led forward by thee

Into ever-widening thought and action

Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.

Perhaps, nothing else defines freedom better than motorcycling. This Independence Day, celebrating the spirif of freedom.

Happy #IndependendeDay. #JaiHInd

Happy Independence Day to all my Indian friends:-)

This is the Ashoka Chakra which is a depiction of the Dharmachakra, the Wheel of Dharma.

The wheel has 24 spokes and symbolizes the teachings of the Buddha.

The Ashoka Chakra has been widely inscribed on many relics of the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka The Great (Reigned 273-232 BCE), most prominent among which is the Lion Capital of Sarnath and The Ashoka Pillar.

The most visible use of the Ashoka Chakra today is at the centre of the National flag of the Republic of India which was adopted on 22 July 1947.

“Bhagwa or the saffron colour denotes renunciation or disinterestedness.

Our leaders must be indifferent to material gains and dedicate themselves to their work.

The white in the centre is light, the path of truth to guide our conduct.

The green shows our relation to (the) soil, our relation to the plant life here, on which all other life depends.

The "Ashoka Chakra" in the centre of the white is the wheel of the law of dharma.

Truth or satya, dharma or virtue ought to be the controlling principle of those who work under this flag.

Again, the wheel denotes motion.

There is death in stagnation.

There is life in movement.

India should no more resist change, it must move and go forward.

The wheel represents the dynamism of a peaceful change.”

(Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, India's first Vice President)

Celebrating India's 64th Independence Day-15th August 2010:)

Maa Tujhe Salaam

Thousands and Thousands of People gathered in the Beach of Visakhapatnam to support the Indian Navy Day Celebrations, Today, on 04th December.

Though it was a successful event,

They were not seen as cheerful as they used to be.

They looked little mournful.

The wound still hurts…

However, the Celebrations ended on a high note as all the people added their voice to the pledge against the terrorism.

On August 15, 1947, at the stroke of midnight, India was declared independent from the British Empire, which was also known as the Raj.

Justice..Liberty..Equality.. Fraternity..One Nation..One Vision..One Identity..wish you all a Happy Republic Day..Jai Hind!!

Today is Bastille Day, the French national holiday, celebrated on 14 July each year.

In France, it is called Fête Nationale ("National Celebration"), or more commonly quatorze juillet ("14 July").

It commemorates the 1790 Fête de la Fédération, held on the first anniversary of the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789; the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille was seen as a symbol of the uprising of the modern French nation, and of the reconciliation of all the French inside the constitutional monarchy which preceded the First Republic, during the French Revolution.

For the first time India is the guest of honour and 400 soldiers who belong to several troops from the Indian army were invited to open the parade avenue des Champs-Elysées in Paris.

At the end of this parade a paratrooper landed place de la Concorde in front of the President of the French Republic Nicolas Sarkozy and the Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh holding an Indian flag.

"Hindustan zindabad & vive la France !!!"

I met this soldier in Chandigarh the capital of Punjab he was in duty in front of the Capitol Complex and he accepted that I made his portrait.

This is the friendliest statue of Gandhiji I've seen, snapped up close and personal-like (it is a larger than life statue). It stands outside the town hall in my wife's home city of Baroda, now called Vadodara, India. The building is called Mahatma Gandhi Nagar Gruh, a venue for cultural events. Someone keeps a decent garland on Gandhiji at all times :)

Anyone know more of this statue's history and its maker?

The day I posted this, August 15 was the date in 1947 that India won its independence from the British. Gandhiji led a nonviolent revolution which founded the world's largest democracy.

He later inspired the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the struggle for civil rights in the U.S. and President Nelson Mandela in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa. "Gandhi was inevitable. If humanity is to progress, Gandhi is inescapable. We may ignore Gandhi at our own risk" -- MLK.

He is called "Mahatma" Gandhi, a title translated as "Gandhi the Great Soul." In India he is also called the Father of the Nation, and respectfully, affectionately he is called Gandhiji.

Popular quotes include "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind" and "We must be the change we wish to see in the world," and a less popular personal favorite: "My religion is Truth, my practice is non-cooperation with evil."

The India Gate is the national monument of India. Situated in the heart of New Delhi, India Gate was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. It was built in 1931. Originally known as All India War Memorial, it is a prominent landmark in Delhi and commemorates the 90,000 soldiers of the Indian Army who lost their lives while fighting for the British Raj in World War I and the Third Anglo-Afghan War. It is composed of red and pale sand stone and granite.

Following India's independence, India Gate became the site of the Indian Army's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, known as Amar Jawan Jyoti (The flame of the immortal soldier).
