Happy Daylight Savings to all concerned! Can spring digging be far behind?

“When I say artist

I mean the man who is building things

-- creating molding the earth

-- whether it be the plains of the west

-- or the iron ore of Penn.

It's all a big game of construction

-- some with a brush

-- some with a shovel

-- some choose a pen.”

Blank Canvas

Splatty is feeling rather arty today. Inspired by his favourite painter, Jackson Pollock, he decided to have a go himself. But I think he needs to get more paint on the canvas and less on himself...

Michael and Albert (AJ) Patnode - Artist Statement

Father and son collaboration

Our photographic art is a kinetic motion study, from the results of interacting with my son A.J and his toys.

He was born severely handicapped much like a quadriplegic. On December 17,1998. Our family’s goal has always been to help A.J. use his mind, even though he has minimal use of his body.

A.J. likes to watch lights and movement. One of the few things he can do for himself is to operate a switch that sets in motion lights and various shiny, colorful streamers and toys that swirl above his bed.

One day I took a picture of A.J. with his toys flying out from the big mobile near his bed like swings on a carnival ride. I liked the way the swirling objects and colors looked in the photo.

I wanted to study the motion more and photograph the whirling objects in an artful way, I wanted my son A.J. to be a part of it. After all, he’s the one who inspires me. When A.J. and I work together on our motion artwork, A.J. starts his streamers and objects twirling, I take the photographs.

Activating a tiny switch might not seem like much to some, but it’s all A.J. can do. He controls the direction the mobile will spin, as well as when it starts and stops. The shutter speeds are long, and sometimes, I move the camera and other times I hold it still.

I begin our creation with a Nikon digital camera. Then I use my computer with Photoshop to alter the images into what I feel might be an artistic way. Working with Photoshop, I find the best parts from several images and combine them into the final composite photograph. I consider the finished work to be fine art. The computer is just the vehicle that helps my expressions grow.

I take the photographs and A.J. adds the magic. It’s something this father and son do together. After I’ve taken a few shots, I show him the photos in the back of the camera. When the images are completed, I show him from a laptop. He just looks. He can’t tell me whether or not he likes the images, but he’s always ready to work with me again.

It offers me my only glance into A.J.’s secret world. We’ve built a large collection of images and I hope the motion and color move you as much as they do me.

A.J. inspires me to work harder to understand my life in the areas of art, photography, people, spirituality, and so much more. He truly sets my mind in motion and helps me find the beauty in everyday things.

GMAnual Work ...

Sort of a Jackson Pollock like experience. This was created with watercolor and ink. And a few loose marbles.

Having an inspiring workplace will help you stay focused. Nothing is more distracting than a messy office, so Keep It Neat! It also hurts your productivity, since you waste time digging through stacks of junk to find that contract or magazine you need. Nip it in the bud by doing a quick neatening of your workspace every day before you leave work.

I saw a tweet from someone that said, “By the time you turn 30, you should have at least one piece of original Art in your home.” I don’t know if that’s a hard and fast rule, but at some point, you’ll want to start using Art to enhance your personal (work)space. Over the years I've amassed a small collection of original Art, all made by close friends. Having any unique art in your home office really does add a new aura to it, this is a place where YOU work. My designer friend Huib van Wijk helped me do the initial decorating, we went for a Zen look. I have a relaxing, clean place to work. I think that a room with a view is very important for fostering a calm yet creative atmosphere too. I love to stock my shelves. Music - I prefer classical - set the stage for a productive day. My vintage BeoSound Century is playing all the time.

Meetings are necessary to coordinate individual efforts, collaborate on joint projects, support for ideas, sell ideas, solve problems collectively, and make consensus-based decisions. Essentially, meetings are a gathering of TWO OR MORE persons to collectively accomplish what ONE person cannot.

Jackson Pollock at MoMA

Pop Art Day is celebrated annually on the anniversary of Jackson Pollock‘s birth.

Jackson Pollock’s works are classified as abstract expressionism, very different from the pop art of artists like Andy Warhol (famous for his tomato soup art) and Roy Lichtenstein. But after further research Pollock was highly regarded among his contemporaries, serving as the “model of a painter who had successfully fused art and life.” Pollock was a strong influence on future movements, and his work is considered fundamental in laying the groundwork for the creation of the Pop Art and Op Art movements.

Today is also Lego day, but there is a little confusion in the Lego CIty Art Department. Op Art, or "Pop" Art? You decide.

By the way, Tomato soup will be served for lunch, and Krusty the clown left his pie in the dining room for us. Sorry, I didn't have a weasel.

Paul Jackson Pollock (January 28, 1912 – August 11, 1956), known as Jackson Pollock, was an influential American painter and a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement. He was well known for his uniquely defined style of drip painting. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackson_Pollock

The colors looked good together, but I couldn't get my camera settings fast enough. After this museum visitor walked away, I asked him to come back to the painting and stand just where he'd been.

He was a little disappointed that I didn't want a shot of the FRONT of him.

And, happy Friday everyone!

I was tagged by the lovely ciao, darling ages ago, so I decided to finally do the tag.

1. I woke up at 4AM this morning and went hiking.

2. I suffer from insomnia occasionally. It's only because I am inspired to write or I have photograph ideas.

3. The first time I went to the beach was when I was 18.

4. I have a fascination with small towns and cities in the east and southern United States. Don't ask why. I just do. And, foreign countries.

5. When I meet someone, I let them discover themselves that I don't eat meat or seafood. Many people assume I am a judgemental moralist if I tell them myself. I let them get to know me first.

6. I have a general distaste for driving, but I don't mind being a passenger.

7. My car won't start and I don't have the money to fix it, so I'm going carless to NAU.

8. Call me old-fashioned but I am a monogamous person. And, I won't date just to date. Most of the time I enjoy being single. I like spending time with friends and family.

9. You could call be somewhat of a hopeless romantic.

10. If you let me, I'll babble about photography and writing all day long. My twin is used to it. :B

And, one last random fact, I quit my job today. I would have needed to in two weeks anyway, but I have a back-up so I don't have to worry.

Tags are very random.

Jackson Pollock (1912-1956), One: Number 31, 1950, oil and enamel paint on canvas, 8'10" x 17'5" (2.7 x 5.3m).

“Begun approximately three years after his first work in this style, One: Number 31, 1950 is evidence of the artist’s technical prowess” says the label... Well, all-RIGHT-ee then...

A long exposure (10 Seconds) taken in front of a Jackson Pollock, MOMA, New York with a Nikon N1. I like the softness and painterly feel a slow shutter gives to these photo impressionistic images. For information on the genre check out photoimpressionism.ca

Ted ponders the wisdom of attempting a jigsaw puzzle of Jackson Pollock's painting "Convergence" (1952).

In 1964, Springbok Editions issued "Convergence" as a 340-piece jigsaw that was touted as "the world's most difficult puzzle". This 1000 piece puzzle just about triples the challenge!
