III Corps and Fort Hood Commanding General Lt. Gen. Don Campbell, Jr. flew over and visited the Jack Mountain range areas Sept. 6, 2011, with Fire Chief Billy J. Rhoads. A wildfire ignited in the area Aug. 30 and the Fort Hood Fire Department, Department of Emergency Service crews, Soldiers and other support elements have worked around the clock to contain the fire. To date, the Jack Mountain Fire has claimed 3,700 acres of the nearly 215,000-acre Texas post and was stopped short of the perimeter of the Boaz Military Operations on Urban Terrain site. John "Mad Jack" Fuller was a famous eccentric and builder of follies around this part of Sussex. He is buried in a pyramid in the churchyard in Brightling.
