The geology of the area presents layers of dolomitique limestone over layers of a marne (as Iunderstand a Rhétien gréseux). Marne is a mix of clay with limestone material and can weather like a mudstone, with water rushing over the harder dolomitique and then undercutting the softer strata. The result is poor foundation for the limestone plaques and thus tipping or even snapping under the monolith's own weight. Chemical erosion further softens the lines of the limestone and this can be clearly seen in the soft to edge in this overhang.
Here we see the remaining 'half' of the initial basin with the missing stone tumbled into time and adjacent dry stone walls. At some point in the past this south/south-west facing basin must have been looking out over the pleasant views with an 'abris' cut under its far side. A very dramatic architecture that either snapped under its own weight, or snapped during a recut from a later chapter of protohistory or prehistory. The sharp break line has had time to erode down to a smooth lip and geologists may be able to speculate a date range for just such a curve.
Too large to be a press, I understand this site to be a candidate from a category of site I have termed 'warm water form' or, a wide basin adapted to heat water either by the sun or via heated river stones. Warm water softening materials to weave, removing the tannin from corns, cleaning, child's play, rite and relaxation.
A late neolithic rock art cluster is further up the valley side perhaps 480m away, and a necropolis of dolmens sits up on the plateau. The 'warm water form' is reached by a large tipped slap that seems to have 'Japanese steps' - ie diagonally opposite steps rather than horizontal and parallel steps and of a type seen in the late ages of prehistory. Other warm water forms can be found in the local area.

A new purchase in 2010 saw this Volvo 9700 B12B come to the Dudleys fleet. It was named Tanworth Tourer II. From what iunderstand it was quite a troublesome coach which never quite saw favour with the drivers.
