Der Sonne entgegen is a dramatic meditation for 14 solo vocal performers, brass ensemble and live electronics. New and old frontiers of our hyper-communicative world are the main subjects, the point of departure of the project.

The dramaturgy follows the multiple transformations of the 14 performers in fragmented, associatively connected and dramatic situations. They appear as Europeans enjoying a seemingly wonderful holiday on an exotic island-bubble, as refugees facing an insurmountable barrier in desert-like surroundings, as stateless people or [...]

Heading out of the walled town of Lucca. Back to the coach at Piazzale Boccherini. to head onto Pisa. It had rained during our time in Lucca (at lunchtime) so was bit wet as we left (was dry by the time we got to Pisa).

Lucca is a city and comune in Tuscany, Central Italy, on the Serchio, in a fertile plain near the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is the capital of the Province of Lucca. It is famous for its intact Renaissance-era city walls.

The walls encircling the old town remain intact, even as the city expanded and modernized, unusual for cities in the region. Initially built as a defensive rampart, once the walls lost their military importance they became a pedestrian promenade, the Passeggiata delle Mure Urbane, a street atop the walls linking the bastions. It passes through the Bastions of Santa Croce, San Frediano, San Martino, San Pietro/Battisti, San Salvatore, La Libertà/Cairoli, San Regolo, San Colombano, Santa Maria, San Paolino/Catalani, and San Donato; and over the gates (Porte): San Donato, Santa Maria, San Jocopo, Elisa, San Pietro, and Sant'Anna. Each of the four principal sides of the structure is lined with a different tree species than the others.

Baluardo San Paolino

The San Paolino rampart stands at the south-western end of the circle of walls, between the San Donato and Santa Maria bastions. The construction has uneven measuring faces and round sides; originally on the sides there were some squares of maneuver that were later dismantled while the original hanging barracks, dated 1570, is still located in the gorge, providing a cover to the tunnel that leads to the basement.

The rampart was built in two phases, incorporating a pre-existing semicircular tower. The northern portion was raised at two different times (1594-1597 and 1600-1602) based on a design by Ginese Bresciani. The rest of the rampart was completed only many years later, between 1640 and 1642, on the project of Maurizio Oddi, when the alignment provided by the medieval walls was definitively abandoned.
