it's been a super busy week, and this was my quick dinner at home late last night. didn't get a chance to do grocery shopping over the weekend, so i just whipped up something quick and simple from whatever i have 'reserved' at home. ;) seaweed and chili pepper flakes atop bed of green tea soba and packed-ready veggie curry in less than 30minutes. :) what did you have for dinner last night? ;)

Probably the most delicious looking pixel food I've ever seen in SL, this batch of goodies comes from the gacha that 8f8 has at the Xiasumi School Festival event that's out there on the grid right now. There's 16 different things (the teapot is not included, nor is the table).

i entered the photo of rolyn, 'dog in the hat', in a dog photo contest; it won an honorable mention and these squeakies were the prize. rolyn's not here to appreciate them, but mukha does! so they're mukha's late birthday/early xmas presents from rolyn. thank you so much rolyn! :)
Every working day my sweet wife Alessandra make a bento for my lunch. This is a special lunch in a box for the strobist assignment. Rice, ham, egg, fresh tomato... a little softbox from behind/above and a reflector camera left. I know it's a very simple setup but I am here and I have already to do a LOT of things... D. Hobby you'll drive me crazy! But really a lot of fun!
it got freezing again suddenly last week, and i got a cold. furthermore, i've been having a bad stomach these days. whenever i'm not doing well, i wanna eat only japanese food. the best kind is soba or udon in warm broth. i prepared this soba dish almost instinctively for yesterday's lunch.
1 ) prepare savory broth with bonito flake (katsuo bushi) and konbu (tough seaweed). season the broth with dark soy sauce, mirin, sake, salt and sugar. it's important to make the broth very flavorful. otherwise, it tastes blank.
2) boil soba (japanese buckwheat long noodle). when it gets boiled, drain water, and wash cooked soba with cold running water until the slippery surface textrue is gone.
3) boil water in a pot again. this is used to heat up soba.
4) mince green scallion finely. beat one egg for one person in a small bowl. mix a spoon of potato starch with water, add the mixture in boiling broth, and stir the broth quickly. beat an egg in a small bowl, and pour it little by little quietly into the broth.
5) heat up soba in boilling water for one mintue or so, and drain water very well.
6) put soba in a bowl, and pour the broth.
いただきます(itadakimasu)!
buona appetito!
you can enjoy it with japanese red pepper mix called 七味唐辛子 (shichimi toogarashi), if you like. i tend to sprinkle it a lot (^ ^;
また急に寒くなって風邪をひいてしまいました。調子が悪い時に食べたくなるのは決まって日本のもの。昨日のお昼は、かき玉そばを作ってフーフー言いながら食べました。やっぱ、からだあったまるね〜
O Rapture! O Joy! Nothing could bring deeper happiness to Yotsuba than a moment such as this!
(I'm glad I snapped this quickly, because the sundae did not last long.)
No matter who we are, let us pause and give thanks for our good fortune. Things may be a bit tougher than last year, but we must still try to see the good in our lives and be grateful. Here, Jun shares her food (but not her beer) with Yotsuba and Rin. Yotsuba is excited; Rin is a little more spiritual.

I am sure it's not as nice as the authentic ones made in Japan but I really liked these maki rolls. So, of course I decided to use them in my food photography. Why not? Don't be surprised if you see this theme being revisited from time to time. Will be sure to do better next time.

Konata enjoys -- what else? -- a chocolate cornet on break. She does like using that stapler for furniture.

Feliz Dia dos Pais!
This year's sushi was provided by Rin. Here she is putting the finishing touches on the presentation while Jun and Yotsuba (barely) restrain themselves. This a little more elaborate than last year's gathering.
Happy Thanksgiving, my Flickr friends!
January 8, 2011. I was gone most of the weekend. After work on friday, we went to a birthday party of a good friend. We stayed the night, so that we could leave on saturday to visit other friends!
Saturday evening, we went out to dinner with 6 friends. We went to a restaurant called 'Sumo': it's a Japanese all-you-can-eat restaurant. I'm not a big fan of sushi, but they all kinds of nice dishes: fish, beef, chicken, vegetarian. With fingerfood, salads, soups, desserts and so on.
Obviously, this picture was taken at the restaurant! I had a great time and will definitely be going there again!
(By the way, I cropped the image. I took a lot of pictures of these lanterns, with people in the shot most of the time because it was so busy, but this was the only one that looked nice! So just cropped it to show the beauty of the lanterns)

[ 213 / 365 ] Went to my favorite Japanese izakaya for dinner tonight. Kingyo Izakaya, rated #1 best casual japanese dining in Vancouver 3 years in a row from 2007 to 2009, consistently delivers excellent Japanese tapas. I have no idea why this dish is called the "world famous" Mr. Yasu Chicken Wings. However, I can tell you that they tasted really good. The chicken wings were marinated with original spice blended with curry flavour. Flavour wise it was perfectly balanced!

These series of photos are my attempts to re-create variations on the "Godzilla Roll" offered by Miki Japanese Restaurant in Modesto, CA (Just a mile or so distance from Raider3 Central! ^_^;)
To the best of my knowledge, theirs is comprised of a futomaki-size (huge roll, not the small ones for tekka maki and such) tuna roll, where the tuna inside is chopped very finely, probably minced, mixed with sriracha sauce, and the whole roll is slathered with tempura batter, deep fried, cut into slices, and drizzled with more sriracha.
One bite of just one slice, and you'll understand why it earned its name. ^_^;
My take on it was using up the remainder of the sashimi-grade fish I had from Black Friday (Frozen then thawed), a new batch of sushi rice, three full sheets of nori (crisped seaweed to wrap the rolls), and then batter and fry them up.
The trick is to use a pair of tongs, preferably dipping them in the tempura batter first, so it won't stick too much to the roll.
You then take the dipped and battered roll, hold it carefully with the tongs, and lower it into the deep fryer (You'll need a BIG deep fryer with a basket for this job, a bucket type model like your Presto Fry Daddy or similar won't do for this, preferably something with about 9 inches length by 5 inches width clearance, and oil level deep enough to immerse the entire roll.), hold it for about 20 or so seconds until the outer edge is fried enough so when you lower it to the bottom of the basket, it won't adhere to it!
Turn it a few times, about 20 more seconds, then let it go for about a minute or so until it looks done. Remove from basket, blot on paper towels, and use a sharp knife (Santoku or similar long blade), and cut each roll up into about 8 slices each.
I made up some creamy spicy sauce (sriracha, tomato paste, kewpie mayo, and a few drops of sesame oil and soy sauce), and some teriyaki sauce (Got the recipe from Aya Imatani's "Sushi for Wimps" cookbook!), and drizzled them on the slices.
They were pretty good, actually, though one of these (8 slices) can be considered a meal, if you have soup and/or salad with it. A more formalized recipe will be put up here when time permits.
"Yosh, itadakimasu!"
