Number 5 in this weeks theme for me Isolated Objects. Taken on a sunny but windy beach at Seaford, East Sussex, UK.

February 2019

Going back through old photos again. I do miss having a plan to go out further than just a few miles.

A Farmhouse just off the great ridge near Mam Tor. I would like to think think the residents have only seen a handful of people during the lock down but i doubt it.

Trying to isolate myself in these days to be able to meet at least a few people of my family over christmas I found this lonely but beautiful swan today...

This is one of my favorite Cypress Tree shots. I love how so many flowers are growing around this tree’s trunk ,distant from the shore or any close neighbors. It’s interesting how four of us shot this lake for the same amount of time, saw the same trees and flowers and all had a significantly distinct vision and interpretation on how to communicate the beauty of the place in our work. I think everyone would see the beauty but making a good image out of the chaos of color and form is a challenge. Keep in mind, I’m only showing you ones I like, not the hundreds more that hit the trash heap. Unlike film, like one of my friends shoots (big expensive film up to 8 x 10), digital allows us to take as many as we like, which costs only time and not money. In my retired case, “Time is not money”. (Bald Cypress - Taxodium distichum) (Sony a1ii, 24-105 lens @ 68mm, f/6.3, 1/80 second, ISO 1600)

South America

The marsh deer (Blastocerus dichotomus) is the largest deer species from South America reaching a length of 2 m (6.6 ft) and a shoulder height of 1.2 m (3.9 ft). It is found in Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay. Formerly found in much of tropical and subtropical South America, it ranged east of the Andes, south from the Amazon rainforest, west of the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest and north of the Argentinian Pampa.

Today it is largely reduced to isolated populations at marsh and lagoon zones in the Paraná, Paraguay, Araguaia and Guapore River basins. Small populations also occur in the southern Amazon, including Peru were protected in Bahuaja-Sonene National Park. It is listed as a vulnerable species by the IUCN and on appendix I of CITES.

The latter half of its scientific name refers to the forked antlers. Marsh deer resemble the North American mule deer or blacktail deer.

The marsh deer lives only in marsh areas, notably the Pantanal and Chaco, in which the level of water is less than 70 cm (28 in) deep. They are swift swimmers. The marshes with their high vegetation density protect them from predators and provide them with food.

These deer also have a small migratory pattern; they follow the water levels between the dry season and flooding season. With the fluctuation in water levels, they can find new food sources that the water uncovers during the dry season. Some freshwater ponds on the Pantanal Wetland, Brazil reported low densities of individuals dictating that those ponds are not able to support large populations of marsh deer. Wikipedia

These are the Cuchara Mountains, a small isolated range of the Rockies in south central Colorado, very close to the New Mexico border. Winter hangs on for a large part of the year here. This photo taken at almost 10,000 feet elevation shows that it's almost June and none of the aspens in the shot have a single Spring bud on them. There was a cold wind blowing, almost "like off the glacier", it snowed for a short time, mostly uber dry "corn snow", and temperatures dropped well into the 20's that night.

Hard to see, but in the distance is one of the "Spanish Sisters", peeking over the horizon.

Truly one of my favorite alpine ecosystems on the Planet.

Fast moving clouds caused this atmospheric optical effect to last less than a minute. The brilliance and colors could not be adequately imaged.

A good cg lightning strike from an isolated cell.

For three hours prior to sunset, this isolated storm produced at least a tornado and 2 inch hail to my north and east. By the time sunset occurred is was approaching Sidney, Nebraska with lots of fire and numerous thunderheads. More to follow.

I think this acorn is from a red oak and accidentally found its way here from USA so it sits on the mantle-piece as a curiosity. There are some red oaks in UK but they aren't a native species.

Sarcophaga is a genus of true flies, the type of the flesh-fly family (Sarcophagidae).

This genus occurs essentially world-wide. These flies are generally well-sized and of a greyish color; like many of their relatives, the typical patten are lengthwise darker stripes on the thorax and dark and light square dots on the abdomen. Many have conspicuous red compound eyes. These are set further apart in females than in males; the females are also larger on average. As typical for this family, it is almost impossible to tell the species apart from their outward appearance, and many can only be reliably identified by microscopic examination of the males' genitalia.

As the common name implies, their larvae typically feed on decaying meat. Some, however, rather eat the bacteria and other small organisms living on carrion. Many species have adapted to humans, and while they are usually nuisance pests, some are medically significant vectors of pathogens and bacteria. Sometimes, the larvae cause myiasis.

Well-known species are Sarcophaga africa, Sarcophaga bercaea, the Grey Flesh-fly (Sarcophaga bullata), Sarcophaga carnaria, Sarcophaga crassipalpis and the Red-tailed Flesh-fly (Sarcophaga haemorrhoidalis).

This is the most isolated ski lodge on Ben Lomond. But what a majestic location!

PERSONAL NOTE:

I'm glad to report that yesterday, for the first time in nearly five weeks I got out for a photo walk with camera. They were a series of street shots around town taken with my Leica D-Lux 7. It's certainly fun to get back to processing photographs again. I'll post them after this short series concludes.

Lecanvey Pier, Clew Bay, County Mayo, Ireland.

Zhangye Danxia Landforms, Zhangye, China.

Zhangye 's Danxia was formed by the erosion of red sandstone, forming isolated peaks and steep stratified outcrops. Its special geological structure, combined with long-term desert conditions , freeze-thaw peeling, and wind and water erosion gave rise to its present appearance.

Geologists believe that Danxia topography is formed by folding of layered oceanic crust. Exposed slanting rock layers have different colors, textures, shapes, sizes, and patterns. The combination of differences in density and erosion create towering peaks, cave holes, and stone halls.

There are 4 viewing platforms inside the park and we visited all 4 of them. Our tour bus had to be parked outside but inside the park they provided bus to take us from platform to platform.
