This shot is from August of last year, a month before Helene. The grove looks drastically different today as many of these trees were blown down or damaged. Give it a year and Kudzu will take over once more.
A female Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis), hunting.
While these birds are indeed small and cute and colorful, they are actually hunters. Unlike many seed-eating/vegetarian birds their size, they eat small creatures.
This one definitely has prey in its sights...

A 4 panel mosaic of part of the Large Magellanic Cloud. Each panel had 3 shots median stacked. I used dust and scratches in Photoshop for a bit of star reduction and some -ve texture slider in Lightroom for a bit of smoothing, a bit of a different effect. Nikon D810A, Nikon 300mm f2.8 VR at f/4, 12 minute subs at ISO400, guided and tracked.

Good morning everyone and I hope you had a nice weekend. As the title again indicates, today is the third in a series posted every Monday showcasing some of my favorite butterflies photographed in 2015.
Featured today is the Great Spangled Fritillary (Speyeria cybele). One of only two Fritillary butterflies found here locally; the other being the Variegated Fritillary, which was a no show this past season. Sad to say I never say a single one.
The Great Spangled Fritillary is a large butterfly with a wing span of 2 1/2 - 4 inches (6.3 - 10.1 cm) and as seen above, has a fondness for Common Milkweed. Which when it does begin to bloom is usually when this species of butterfly first appears locally.
Thank you for stopping by...and I hope you have a truly great day and week.
