Meaning 'surrounded by mountains' in the ancient dialect of the island's original Guache inhabitants, the white-washed houses of the hamlet of Taganana stand out amidst the lush green peaks of the Anaga Rural Park and the contrasting blue of the Atlantic Ocean. The Anaga massif, whose history like much of the island of Tenerife is volcanic, stretches from Cruz del Carmen to Punta de Anaga on the island's north-eastern tip.
Taganana is known to be one of the oldest settlements on the island and it is believed that it is its relatively remote location in the Anaga massif which has spared it from destructive mass tourism over the past fifty years. In fact, the area around Taganana and along this stretch of coastline is home to a whole range of different dispersed settlements, including some whose populations remain below 100 to this day.

Roque de las Bodegas is a beach and hamlet located in the area of Taganana. The beach is made up of a combination of shingle, pebbles and volcanic black sand and is located right at the foot of the near-vertical cliffs of the Anaga mountain range where they meet the Atlantic Ocean. This area of the Tenerife's north coastline is often described as the island's very own version of the rugged Napali (or Nā Pali) Coast located on Kauai, Hawaii.
A number of restaurants have set up along the edge of the beach here and are known for offering simple Canarian dishes such as fried fish, salad, and papas arrugadas, or wrinkled potatoes, served with mojo sauces.
The mountainous terrain we see in the distance as we look west, is that which was viewed from several hundred metres above sea level in the Taganana Valley image posted a few days ago.

The conference centre in Adeje was inaugurated in 2005. The building is the work of local architects Felipe Artengo Rufino, Fernando Martín Menis and José María Rodríguez-Pastrana. The spectacular curves on the roof of the Magma Centre are inspired by the waves of the sea and held up by twelve columns made of concrete and the chasnera stone that is so typical of southern Tenerife.

The venue was built as a conference and events centre, an exhibition hall and a setting for all kinds of concerts thanks to the various areas inside it and its mobile panels enabling different layouts. The centre covers 22,000 m2 (5.4 acres) and is provided with natural light and ventilation thanks to a series of north-facing skylights.

Ruddy Turnstones strut along beaches and rocky shorelines stopping occasionally to flip rocks, seaweed, or other debris with their stout slightly upturned bill to look for insects and small crustaceans hidden beneath.
They are said to form flocks on migration but winter flocks tend not to be large, often in tens rather than hundreds. The flocks tend to stick together with the birds all ‘knowing’ each other and are said to have a hierarchy that involves fighting. They are allegedly the only scolopacid (of the waders and seabirds family) known to kill one another. This was one of a small group foraging pierside at the Marina San Miguel in Golf del Sur on Tenerife's southern coast.

Yet another shot from Roque de las Bodegas - a beach and hamlet located in the area of Taganana, taking its name from the rock formation seen here which stretches into the Atlantic, although from this angle, its lengthy extent out into the Atlantic - as viewed in the previous image post - is not explicitly apparent. The small settlement consists primarily of restaurants and small shops these days, and is located right at the foot of the near-vertical cliffs of the Anaga mountain range on Tenerife's north coast.
The site is said to have been of great importance to the Taganana area since the 16th century, by virtue of the presence of a small jetty running alongside the rocks which enabled the trading of wine with Europe and America. Barrels loaded with Canarian wine are said to have been loaded to trade ships via a cableway installed by locals with the name of the rock and settlement translating literally to 'Rocks of the Wineries'.

Another from the series at this location, all taken in a short thirty minute stop on an excursion around the north-east of Tenerife in late December 2019. Having reiterated the description of this site and its history for the past few images, a little about the formation of the island and the history of the Anaga range in general instead now follows.
Millions of years ago, a series of violent volcanic eruptions led to the formation of a land mass comprising three main volcanic areas which emerged from the Atlantic in an almost triangular formation, to the west, to the south and to the north-east. Volcanic processes continued to shape the development of Tenerife for subsequent millions of years, particularly in the formation of a huge volcanic structure connecting all three of these mountain ranges at the centre of the land mass which eventually collapsed leaving the Teide caldera we can see today. The three original mountain ranges which helped establish the island remain today. Those in the south came to be known as El Roque del Conde, to the west are the Teno Mountains while the Anaga Mountains seen here are those from the original north-east corner of the land mass.
The Anaga range is now both a protected 'Rural Park' and a UNESCO World Heritage Biosphere Reserve and, by virtue of its coverage in large laurel forests known as laurisilva which thrive in the humid but mild climate, it is the area in Europe that is said to have the highest number of endemic species.

Another from the port at Los Abrigos - a picturesque fishing village in the Granadilla de Abona municipality on Tenerife's south coast. It was once known as El Abrigo, the overcoat, as it is one of only a few naturally protected harbours in the south of the Island which has historically protected fishermen and their boats from storms.
In as recent times as the 1940s and 1950s, some of the villagers walked from the coast at Los Abrigos places further inland like San Miguel, Granadilla or Vilaflor, with baskets loaded with the fish caught from their own boats carried on their heads to trade.
The fishing tradition is one that very much continues today here at Los Abrigos, but the stock that is gleaned from the Atlantic is now generally either sold at the market here or in the fish restaurants which line the pier from which this image is taken.

Mount Teide is a volcano on Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Spain. Its 3,718m (12,198 ft) summit is the highest point in Spain and the highest point above sea level in the islands of the Atlantic. This and the two images posted previously should be viewed in succession to gauge an idea of scale and context.
Teide is an active volcano: its most recent eruption occurred in 1909 from the El Chinyero vent on the northwestern Santiago rift. The volcano and its surroundings comprise Teide National Park, which has an area of 18,900 hectares (47,000 acres) and was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on June 28, 2007.

A second wider shot here than the last which nonetheless still illustrates the variety of ships that make use of the port at Santa Cruz de Tenerife - with a greater emphasis on the huge sailing vessel Kruzenshtern.
Kruzenshtern is the second largest sailing ship in the world behind another Russian ship, Sedov. Originally called Padua, she was built in Germany in the 1920’s as one of five clipper ships for the 'Flying P Line' which traded in the Atlantic, Indian Ocean and Pacific. Padua was surrendered to the USSR in 1946 and renamed Kruzenshtern after the famous Russian hydrographer and navigator. She is easy to recognise with distinctive black and white sides, common on ships that traded with the East, where the design imitated gunports to scare away pirates.
In the distance are the Siem Day and Floatel Reliance vessels seen more clearly in the previous post at this location.

Beyond this lies Tenerife's North Airport, Los Rodeos, and, in the distance through the haze, Mount Teide.
This large clearing which is now marked by a designated viewpoint area and small associated visitor centre was historically a very important crossroads. The junction was traditionally devoted to the Virgen del Carmen who protected travellers.

The Montaña Roja reserve comprises a volcanic cone 171 metres high, flanked by Leocadio Machado and La Tejita beaches, which run for 3 kilometres along Tenerife's south coast.
Montaña Roja itself is a volcanic cone created by a coastal eruption and is connected to the island by a causeway of volcanic material. Saltwater pools can be found in a number of locations within the reserve, fed by seawater filtered through the sand at high tide. In addition to the Montaña Roja’s value as a landscape feature, it is notable for its sand- and mud-based ecosystems which play host to a number of endangered species. It is seen here from the beach at Golf del Sur which lies adjacent to the Marina San Miguel.

The oldest mountain ranges in Tenerife rose up as islands from the Atlantic Ocean through volcanic eruptions around twelve million years ago. Tenerife as it is today was formed three million years ago by the fusion of three of these 'mountain islands' known today as the ranges of Anaga, Teno and Valle de San Lorenzo.
In this chance image captured on approach to the island's southern airport, the Teno Massif can be seen in the foreground at the north west of the island - characterised by deep ravines ending abruptly in the sea at the cliffs of Los Gigantes. At the centre of the island is Mount Teide which, at 3718m, can be seen from all around the island and from others in the Canarian archipelago.

This shot illustrates the variety of ships that make use of the port at Santa Cruz de Tenerife - the only thing missing is a passenger liner, although there were actually 7 or 8 in port that day to the north (behind the viewing angle) of where this shot was taken.
In the distance is a semi-submersible vessel which is used as an accommodation rig for offshore operations, called Floatel Reliance. In the middle is a Norwegian vessel, the Siem Day, an offshore construction vessel responsible for subsea installation, inspection and maintenance work, and in the right foreground is a particularly interesting visitor, the Russian Kruzenshtern.

There are a variety of theories as to the origin of the volcanic ensemble that shapes the National Park. The most popular versions claim that the crater of Caldera de las Cañadas was formed by a gravitational slide or a sinking crater.
Las Cañadas (seen here in part) is comprised of two semi-craters that are separated by a row of rock formations known as the Roques de García. Not all of the landscapes in this National Park are precipitous and pointy; the erosive force of the wind and water has smoothed and softened many surfaces and deposited material at the base of the caldera, resulting in sandy plains such as the Llano de Ucanca seen here.

There are a variety of theories as to the origin of the volcanic ensemble that shapes the National Park. The most popular versions claim that the crater of Caldera de las Cañadas was formed by a gravitational slide or a sinking crater. The giant cone that is now known as Mount Teide (3,718m) is a stratovolcano formed by no end of successive eruptions that have piled up layer upon layer of volcanic detritus over the centuries.
Las Cañadas is comprised of two semi-craters that are separated by a row of rock formations known as the Roques de García. The row runs perpendicular to the crater near to Cumbres de Ucanca and constitutes one of the most characteristic and most visited elements in the Park. The twin volcanoes of Pico Viejo (out of shot behind the Roques de García) and Mount Teide were formed in the area that lies between the two semi-craters.
This shot is a composite image of around three to four portrait shots because of the scale of the landscape, taken at 2,244m above sea level.
