Madeira mornings: Every few days water came down from the mountain and flowed into the gardens adjacent to the channel here. Smaller channels then directed the water to particular areas in the gardens. Stones or wooden boards interrupted the flow if it wasn't needed somewhere.
This beautiful Hawk* was found out in Idaho sitting on an irrigation wheel - calling out to its mate to warn it that I am near. The mate was on the ground about 500 feet away hunting as well. (* --I believe a Red Tail or Red Shoulder - need to see wings open to tell.)
Kurondo-ike Pond was constructed approximately 400 years ago as a reservoir for irrigation in the area. Approximately 70 years ago, a Takayama reservoir was constructed in the adjacent area, and Kurondo-ike Pond became a place of relaxation for the local community. Also, Kurondo-ike Pond is located 10km north of my place, at the headwaters of the Tomio River.

In these hot days irrigation is key. Shot near a cornfield near Vorden, shot on our way to a local farm for our supply of artisan jams & juices.

Here in the desert, irrigation canals/ditches are commonplace and much appreciated. They are the life blood of desert farming communities. Water is such an amazing thing!
A cotton field irrigation pump in Safford, Arizona. Behind the pump is a concrete trough that runs for miles along the side of the road. A combination of the natural slope of the ground and some help as needed from pumps along the way keeps the water moving. Mid picture is what is left in the field after a cotton picker has harvested the cotton. A cloudy, stormy sky is hanging low over the Pinalena Mountains in the background.
Taken in Safford, Arizona, USA. Cotton is the major agricultural crop in Safford. There are many miles of culverts, ditches, dams, and pumps to provide the flood irrigation for this important crop
Irrigation sytems glow in late light as the sun drops behind the foothills at Georgetown, Idaho. I recently posted a color photo taken from the other side of the fence and thought the scene had potential as a black and white.
Into the high desert of west Idaho lies an irrigation reservoir for local ranches below. Also a good fishing reservoir managed by Idaho Fish and Game. Plan on a leisurely drive on an extremely rough road to get there.
The fields around Mintraching are already being irrigated. For this purpose,
groundwater is used, which is at a relatively high level due to the proximity of the Danube.
Die Felder rund um Mintraching werden bereits beregnet. Hierfür wird
Grundwasser genutzt, das wegen der nahen Donau relativ hoch steht.
