I had two pictures from this stop that I really liked, posted the other one a month ago. I could never decide which one I liked best, so gonna post them both. I think they're different enough.

Here's a link to the other if you want to compare.

October 7th description;

On my way home for the weekend after a hectic retreat from Los Angeles. Pulled over near Paragonah Utah to take pictures of these irrigation sprinklers back-lit from the midmorning sun. Temperatures a little below freezing, creating icicles and ice covered plants.

I would like to thank all, that you have taken the time to view and comment on my photos, it is very much appreciated.

Madeira mornings: Every few days water came down from the mountain and flowed into the gardens adjacent to the channel here. Smaller channels then directed the water to particular areas in the gardens. Stones or wooden boards interrupted the flow if it wasn't needed somewhere.

Back irrigating again on the sand. We had four inches of rain last week and two days the boss told me not to come and two days I got sent home early. This week I'm working extra hours trying to keep irrigations going on the sand and trying to catch up mowing and baling hay. I probably won't get caught up on photo streams til things slow down or my eyes get better.

This beautiful Hawk* was found out in Idaho sitting on an irrigation wheel - calling out to its mate to warn it that I am near. The mate was on the ground about 500 feet away hunting as well. (* --I believe a Red Tail or Red Shoulder - need to see wings open to tell.)

Fields ready to be planted with Cotton in Safford, Arizona

At the end of the football (soccer) season the council laid a lot of new dirt on the playing fields in the park. Now the race is on to grow new grass before the children come back from holidays. I must confess that the dog has been moved back in time from another shot where the spray wasn't as good.

Have a good Sunday and thanks very much for visits, faves, comments and invites,

In these hot days irrigation is key. Shot near a cornfield near Vorden, shot on our way to a local farm for our supply of artisan jams & juices.

Here in the desert, irrigation canals/ditches are commonplace and much appreciated. They are the life blood of desert farming communities. Water is such an amazing thing!

This is probably a hay field, but in the spring the dandelions take over.

A cotton field irrigation pump in Safford, Arizona. Behind the pump is a concrete trough that runs for miles along the side of the road. A combination of the natural slope of the ground and some help as needed from pumps along the way keeps the water moving. Mid picture is what is left in the field after a cotton picker has harvested the cotton. A cloudy, stormy sky is hanging low over the Pinalena Mountains in the background.

Into the high desert of west Idaho lies an irrigation reservoir for local ranches below. Also a good fishing reservoir managed by Idaho Fish and Game. Plan on a leisurely drive on an extremely rough road to get there.

Taken in Safford, Arizona, USA. Cotton is the major agricultural crop in Safford. There are many miles of culverts, ditches, dams, and pumps to provide the flood irrigation for this important crop

This pivot irrigation system won't be needed for a while.

Irrigation sytems glow in late light as the sun drops behind the foothills at Georgetown, Idaho. I recently posted a color photo taken from the other side of the fence and thought the scene had potential as a black and white.

The wheels seen in my previous photo are part of a graveyard of irrigation wheels discarded in Bennington, Idaho. A good strong wind can do a lot of damage to irrigation systems, and I imagine farm equipment damages them occasionally as well. This view also shows one of the farms that would irrigate these fields in the summer. The background is the Preuss Range of the Rocky Mountains, bordering the east side of Bear Lake Valley, Idaho
