WPPD - Kaleidoscope

The last Sunday of April is Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day. To celebrate, I loaded a roll of Kentmere Pan 400 in my Ondu 6x6 and shot the entire twelve frames.

My day started with picking up my son Robert at his group home and heading over to Irondequoit UCC. Rain was forecast for later in the day, so I took advantage of the early sunshine for a photograph out front.

After church I took Rob back home then stopped by Webster Park on Lake Ontario. The remaining photographs are from my back yard later that afternoon.

Shutter Stutter

I planned to take a set of photographs around our back yard, starting with the view from the bedroom window. I set the camera directly on the window sill instead of on the stubby tripod. Obviously not the best idea.

But I still like the result.

Completely unintentional double exposure. Ironically, the two photographs were taken twenty feet or so from each other. I may go back and retake the originals, but I rather like the contemplative combination.

The plaque on the tree has a conflation of Joshua 1:9 and Esther 4:14, which I found both appropriate and timely.

Irondequoit Bay Impressions

Frame 11. One photograph looking out and across by water's edge, and one back up and around on the bluff. When I realized I had neglected to advance the film in between, I took one more from the bluff at a slightly different. I assumed frame 11 was wasted.

Ten years ago I took another, also unintentional, double exposure with the same camera at Letchworth State Park. I call it "Letchworth impressions". It got me a Partner's Choice award at Image City Photography Gallery. I think it may have happened again.

First stop of the evening was Webster Park and then we went down to Irondequoit Bay to watch the last of the sun's rays.

The many faces of Jesus.

Irondequoit United Church of Christ, from the balcony after the morning worship service. The building is relatively old. As was typical at the time, it had a portrait of a blond-haired, blue-eyed, well-coiffed, Caucasian Jesus at the front. Rather than removing it, they added surrounding collection of portrait of Jesus as envision by other cultures and racial groups. It works well.

I had one roll of Kodak Tri-X sitting on the shelf. I have not shot Tri-X in a long time. I am reminded of why some folks consider it the best black and white film ever produced.

Stop, again, plus a hair

I photographed this intersection with the Yashica-D; I wanted to see how it would work with the drastically-different wide pinhole.

As for the hair. I've been getting this strange black line showing up in the lower left of the my 6x12 photographs. You can see it in the second frame, a corner of the same photograph as the first frame but before the final cleanup pass. I finally tracked it down last night as I was loading a fresh roll of film.

It seems there was a wispy piece of hair, mine I assume, stuck to the top right of the inside of the camera between the front pinhole and the back film plane. Pinhole cameras have an infinite depth of field, inside the camera as well as in front of it. So there was the hair, which ended up, magnified and in perfect focus, in the lower left of my photographs. Duly removed.

Irondequoit Bay outlet bridge August 2018

Inspired by my favorite local landscape photographer Sheridan Vincent, I shot this sunrise panorama on July 13, 2013. The sun rose just enough for me to capture a few images before it hid itself behind a thick layer of clouds. HDR of 6 separate exposures.

My day started with picking up my son Robert at his group home and heading over to Irondequoit UCC.

Interesting note: The central blue-eyed, Caucasian Jesus dates from the WWII era. Rather than replacing it, the church added a set of Jesus portraits from other cultures and ethnic groups. It works beautifully.

Two very important things to remember about Jesus:

1. He looks like me.

2. He looks like my brothers and sisters who don't look like me.

A lonely tree stump looking out over the frozen bay.

There were quite a few seagulls around last evening (May 25, 2014). This photo does not capture the magnitude, but I liked how it balances the gulls, outlet, people and the Irondequoit Bay Bridge in the distance.

We have had some unusual weather this summer. No 90 degree days in July and some cool days. The National Weather Service is actually calling for Lake Effect rain and possibly thunder tomorrow. Lake Effect is usually reserved for late fall through spring. If today's sky is any indication tomorrow could be interesting.

this window is one of 5 stained glass windows that I helped clean and restore in 1982. The church building had been burned and these were salvaged, restored and used in the new building....
