When I woke up this morning, I knew it was going to be a long day. I had no idea I'd be this beat by the end of it. 7am, both of my alarms went off , first the Bladder alarm and seconds later the phone alarm. Its like they are tied together or something! I decided that it was time to get up and get a jump start on the day. Shower and an out of character trip to Mc Donald's was to start things off. After that I got right down to work. Editing Ms Erika's photos to earn the beer she paid me in!
After a edit, some contract work and emails I decided to multi task and edit another shot while making phone calls to setup locations for tomorrow and Sundays shoot. First up was the Library. I wanted the biggest and best library around. I called the college for shits and giggles just to see if there was a snowballs chance in hell that I'd be able to get in there with a camera. I called and was immediately directed to the provost of the campus or man in charge! An answering machine was all I got. I left the customary message and moved on. I wasn't confident about getting permission but figured it was worth a try. Next up was junk yards. This proved to be a stone wall at first. I called the most popular yard in Stuart, Snake Road Salvage. This place obviously went all corporate and "fancy legitimate business" I explain what I needed, mentioned that I'd pay a reasonable fee and what do I get "We don't allow photography on the property" WHAT? did I suddenly transport to Pittsburgh? You don't allow photography? what are you doing back there? hiding dead bodies? I quickly thanked them for the 2 seconds they gave me and moved on. Its a good thing there are other junk yards in the area because I won't shoot there and most definitely won't buy anything there. What happened to the good old days where you'd to a junk yard, get half greeted by a sweaty, greasy and overweight man. You'd go pull the part you need and then have the price jump way up from the quoted price. They did that so that when you refused the part they'd take that part, catalog it and then sell it as a used part with a stocked part price. You basically did the labor for them… genius plan if there ever was one.
Moving on, I called another junk yard and got a machine and another can got an excuse as to why they can't. Just as I was about to lose all hope, I see that I missed a call. It was Chris Lang with Second Change Salvage. He was about to leave the office for the weekend and was returning my call. "shit" I thought out load, I was going to miss him and lose the only lead I had. I quickly called him back and after 10 minutes on hold I finally got to speak to him. He was very accommodating and gave me the green light and the contacts within the company to speak to to make it happen. "want a few cars smashed? we'll do that" DAMN! now this is what I'm talking about. Tomorrow I'll go scout the place and see if it will work. Hopefully we can get in there on Sunday to see about shooting some background shots of over turned cars and shit like that for later compositing. The only thing Chris said to me about safely was. "don't stand under any of the suspended cars and get crushed. That would be very bad for both of us" I whole heartily agree with you chris. I will not be walking, standing or crouching around any suspended anything!
Next up was the 40 min drive to Palm Beach for a test shoot with Patty Madden. We were going to see if a total compositing approach would work for the shoot next monday. One of my largest clients to date and I bust out the Walmart bed sheets! Am I ashamed? Hell no! I'm frugal and I'm not afraid to say so! When people see how I shoot they are even more amazed at the final product!
Directly after the test shoot Patty and I headed to Boynton Beach to check in with the Graffiti artist, Marcus who was just starting the giant graffiti mural for the shoot. Today's shot is obviously, or maybe not as obvious as I hoped, a shot of Marcus. I'll end up doing a second part to this shot as soon as he finishes the wall.
Marcus Borges AKA Grab, who was "in Brazil, raised in New York, and Developed in South Florida as an Urban Artist." with over 10 years of urban art experience, Marcus is truly a talented artist. When you think of Graffiti artist, most of the time you think of outlaw youth with a spray can and a bad attitude. Not Marcus, He is a talented, well spoken artist who creates true works of art. I cannot wait to see the finished wall.
Just as I was setting up for the shots I got a call on my business line. This must have been my lucky day as first the junk yard now I get permission to shoot in the Library from Dr. Arnold of IRCC St. Lucie West Campus. I was now a little less stressed about the weekend and directed all my attention on the task at hand.
I tried to take as little of Marcus's time as possible since I want to see the finished wall ASAP. I shot for about 10 minutes with him in several different positions. SInce the wall isn't even close to being done, I wasn't worrying about framing wide enough to get the wall. Once its done, I'll do some sort of panorama with a bad ass shot of spray cans flying in the air.
So day 2 with the 5d and I'm noticing that there are a few differences that really challenge me. First off, the full frame gives me so much more out of the lens then I'm used to. What is typically shot at 24 now looks way too wide. The file sizes are huge compared to the 40d and I run out of space twice as fast. I get shallower depth of field at equivalent Apertures between the 40d and the 5d. I have to shoot at f11-f16 to get the same depth of field as f8-f11 would give me on the 40d. There are other subtle differences that will take time to get used to. I know that there is one thing I don't' like. Its that when shooting bracketed Exposure for HDR the 3 frame per second max really drives me nuts. The 40D has a 6fps max and that makes capturing daylight HDR shots feasible with hand held. I tend to shake too much and it really shows with the 5d.
So.. After all this I drive home, load the pictures and have just enough time to grab a cupcake and a drink before heading out to meet with my newest model and acting volunteer Christina Solis of Key West, FL. Christina drove all the way up for the keyes to be my sexy super hero in this weekends 2 part series. Sexy, business alter ego day 1. Bad ass super hero for day 2! should be a great time! lets hope the weather holds up! I'm excited and I know she is. Should be a great time.

Not everything in life is as we expect. There are times when nothing goes as planned, there are times when problems are the only ones we get. We even feel no one is closer to us and we feel so alone even in the crowd, thinking about the solutions for all the problems we have. We even dream about having a single solution which solves all our problems in a second, like pressing a remote button and the whole scenario changes and there is complete happiness around. But reality is brutal, it kind of makes us think about those problems till we are exhausted and down. But there is an interesting thing about these "problems". If we think the problem can be solved, why do we hurt ourself trying to solve it ourselves, or if we feel if it can never be solved, then why hurt ourselves thinking about something which never exists. No matter how down you are its upto you to put your heads up and walk across the problems or put your head down and hurt yourself thinking about them when life is fast moving away from you. Thanks for all your visits, comments and fav

I remember one fine afternoon when it was half yearly holidays during my 1st Grade in School. The old black and white Solidaire TV at home was playing some random english song on DD. I think the guy singing resembled close to Eric Clapton, i don't remember well. But some bearded guy singing in a flat voice through his nose.
My grandfather and i were sitting and watching this and i exclaimed..
"Thaaththa, en thaaththa english paattu ellam raagam'e illama asingama paadara?" and my grandfather exclaimed..
(Tamil to English Translation: Grandpa, why do english people sing songs that have no melody in such an ugly fashion?)
"ammaam, avaa ellam appadi thaan. namma karnataga sangeetham madhiri ellam avaa paattu irukkadhu. appadi thaan asaingama paaduva..."
(Tamil to English Translation: Grandpa responds - Yes, english people are so.. Unlike our classical music which is melodious, their music is ugly and that's how they sing it")
The conversation ended there or rather i don't remember the rest of it. I left home and happily went to my cousin praveens place for vacation and that evening we were generally lying in bed and talking and the same conversation came up and my cousin said something along the lines of "Don't have such a narrow minded view of things..." sort of or may be he called me plain dumb on my face, which for fact i was very much.
What he did next, i have a High Definition photographic memory of. He pulled out a cassette from his dad's cassette drawer. Periappa used to have atleast 400 casettes. They filled two cupboards and drawers. It was a green colour casette with Yellow text written on it and it read "Michael Jackson - Bad".
Load it into the high end BPL Stereo double deck playback + recording system, the best of its kind money can buy and periappa was the first one to have it in my family and yes he still has it and it works flawlessly. The Synth Lead went "taan taan taan taan..." and it completely threw me off. Never in my wildest imagination did i expect something along these lines from an "asingamaana english pattu paadara vellakkaran's" (Tamil to English Translation: Ugly english music singing white man"). Over the next few days i think we listened to that casette over and over again and i was totally spell bound.
The "hee hee" and "aaaw" on "The way you make me feel" and the lines "I've been a victim of a selfish kind of love, its time that i realize.. there are some with no homes, not a nickel to loan..." from "Man in the Mirror" sends shivers down your spine thinking of it now. The bridge and mixing on the last stanza of "Smooth Criminal" left you wondering if aliens from outer space did the re-recording and mixing for that track. What differently i saw with MJ was that everybody sings the song, he emotes. That is a gift. Not many artists emote, like MJ does.
Today is the 25th of June, 2010. Its precisely a year now, i fail to come to terms with the fact that he is dead and evil bastards like Karunanidhi are still alive. Life is unfair, life is definitely "The Bitch" you can ever see. I feel robbed, still. I'm reminded of the scene from Passion of the Christ where Jesus is hit with a whip that has sharp blades with hooks and it digs into his skin and rips and peels of flesh from his back and Jesus quivers in horrendous pain, that is how i feel today, very very RAW.
A few days back i was browsing this photostream and Noor Sandhu had posted an image that had profound words.
"The loneliness of the mind is more torturous than the loneliness of the heart. You see, it cannot be fooled by pleasurable company."
The Loneliness of my mind fails to be fooled by pleasurable company, despite the fact that im constantly in the company of the most pleasurable people in this current phase of my life and doing the most pleasurable things.
When Michael Jackson is on Stage and grabs the mic and sings, everyone in the audience, right from the person in the 1st row to the last guy a mile away feels he/she is having a one on one personal conversation with Michael Jackson. I heard that somewhere on an interview tape when someone said that about MJ. I feel its so true because the last song that was released of his seem's more like a personal conversation of mine that i didn't have with anyone.
WTF camera, WTF lens, who cares?

Let me try to upload most of them before I start with the next series. Distraction is an essential evil of life. Distraction brings fear, chaos, doubt, confusion and challenges. Which is probably why i love shooting people so much because as a confused bloke im easily distracted. I divert from one topic to another and eat my foot in every conversation because i stand stupified why im discussing something, where i started and how i ended up here.
The thing is, with male models they do as told. With women, it hardly works like that, at least in my personal experience. Which is why it is such a great challenge. It makes me happy when people say "your images are nice" and complement the hard work. It also feels nice when people say "sorry, i disagree but this is not great". Genuine criticism is the best reward.
However when it comes to women, there is just one thing that brings the utmost happiness. It is to hear from the subject who was the model herself say the image is nice. As a photographer i find that to be the highest compliment and reward and there is nothing that gets me into the state of intoxication compared to that. Its precious because it happens once in a blue moon.
P.S. Yes, i thought of the title for this image even before i shot it and specifically placed the distraction of that pillar so that i can write this. Yes, im weird..

Nothing brings tranquility better than satisfaction. Nothing brings satisfaction than getting precisely what you want. Nothing gets what you want but hard work. Hard work cant produce results unless its fun doing that. Which is precisely what i did all day today. A fantastic shoot with two friends. Too much fun was had and lots of pictures shot.
I'll be uploading a few good ones shortly...

Another Portrait of Sharada. Gosh, this place is such a fucking bore without a friend like her. I can't wait for February when she ill be back for the wedding. Of course, there is a little bit of a controversy war here. Apparently i was so busy shooting pictures, as usual i forgot to be in one and that pissed off Sharada and Mala so much that my camera gear is kind of assumed to be banned at the wedding. Of course, i sincerely lent my ear to this threat and let it out of the other one in the classical way.
There is of course some post production work here. No, nothing with the colors and exposure as such. They are straight out of the camera. Removed small specks of scars on her chin, credited from the countless fist fights she had gotten into during school and college and whooped some ass big time that many of them wrote it off in taxes.
Noise Ninja'ed to give it a air brushed feel even though there is no excessive touching on this picture apart from the cloning out of dark spots / scars on the chin.
I would love to learn how to touch up portraits, if some one has simple tutorials on photoshop that i could learn from, that would be great help.

10th Chennai Photowalk, Walking past Saidapet Bus Stand me and Ashwin ran into this lady after this gentleman. She came to us and said "Can you take a photo of tiger?" and we were like "sure" and out came this clawed animal. :-D
It's quite interesting because this fellow was posing like a rock star for the camera while ashwin shot pictures. Quite unfortunate though, she did not know we had digital camera's and she could see the results instantly.
We selfish pooks were checking the histogram and before we could lift our heads up and say "here see how handsome tiger looks", she was gone.

One of the postures you cannot miss in a Bharatnatyam dance recital is a scene where someone is looking into a mirror. Traditionally this happens to be a female character all of the time. I've never seen a male dress themselves up and do a make up check in front of the mirror. While my fingers press hard on the shutter, my brains go pricking around and remind me that gender based roles are embedded so deep in our culture. I cannot help but make that observation when i look at some forms of art.
On a more relevant note, im a total sucker for spot lights because i can unleash some havoc on the audience of the image with some shadow play. Of course, nailing this light is a big mess. You cannot switch to spot metering to do this better when shooting cause changing your meter takes time and it could make the difference between getting the shot and not getting it. Nevertheless, when you get it, nothing like it.

I don't remember the complete context of this dance recital but it was something along the lines of Krishna. Snakes are depicted when discussing Devi/Amman/Kali in Indian mythology, usually. The piece here is called "Kalinga Narthanam", thanks to Amirtha for the Update and Correction here.
I cannot help but remember all of this weird snake dance stuff that foreigners get real crazy excited about when it comes to India and Indian classical dance. So much that i've even heard bogus snake dance classes taught in the Bay Area.
For the love of my non indian friends i will quote here. There is no such thing called "Snake Dance" in india. Every classical art form when it talks about Shiva or any form of Devi will probably refer to the snake. The snake is obviously very respected, feared and worshiped a creature in Hinduism and almost every classical dance will have postures and moves that represent elements of this wonderful reptile.
For more info on Snakes and debunking stupid myths on snakes i suggest you touch base with Capt. Suresh Sharma. If there is someone who knows real stuff about snakes and handles them daily like a kid would handle chocolate, its gotta be him.
Nevertheless, if you are really interested in knowing the "Indian Snake Dance" the i suggest you get to know classical dance forms of India, especially Bharathnatyam.

I was gifted with the opportunity to shoot for Sri Madurai M. Muralidaran's "Silappathikaram" in concert. Silappathikaram is a tamil epic that talks about a lot of things which is too hard to explain on a flickr page. Its best read and experienced. Of course if this is given to you in dance then nothing like it.
The scene depicts a typical day in the Madurai Streets just before the King arrives to visit the temple. Women are selling wares, gossipping, catching up with friends, shopping.
There are no words to explain how it feels to be in such a gifted atmosphere to experience art.
I decided to go with a panoramic crop this time. Capt. Suresh has been pushing me to post more of my dance photography work so here is one for him :-)

Jatayu is the mythical bird/divine creature that fights with Ravana when he kidnaps sita to lanka. Jatayu fights ravana fiercely but ultimately is overpowered and falls to his death. Jatayu however narrates the incident of Ravana Kidnapping Sita and passes away.
The portion of the dance was about this story and kavya here depicts Jatayu while she recites the story in her dance.

Thats pretty much what some of us get left with at the end of a very worked out and tiring 2010. However, its worth all the fun we've had and all the stupid things we gotta do to have that fun.

A Lorikeet, feeding out of Renuka's hands in Singapore. They seem to be quite used and comfortable doing this. Its such a fantastic feeling to have these beautiful birds feed out of your hand. The only downside being, they are talkative. They are so talkative, "I" would loose big time if there was a chatterbox competition and i competed with one of these!

So I’m walking along the campus of Sun Yat Sen University and I’ve been walking around since morning and its almost 2 pm. I'm famished and I’m all set to get out of the place and I’m probably like about 50 foot away from the gate. 2 School kids are going back home with their father and i pass by them and smile at them. Instantly they start screaming with excitement and the moment I touch my camera this girl does, this! She was busy eating her cake a few seconds before I walked into her sight and now it looks to me like the cake does not matter much, anymore. Looking like the happiest person in the world in front of the camera is absolute life or death an issue, from the looks of it :)
The other kid, probably her brother grabs my crutch and wants to play with it. They are screaming with laughter and are thrilled at seeing me. The father had to finally bid goodbye and dragged the kid’s home and boy they weren’t happy with it. What an awesome day it was. I wish everyday was like this.
