Architectural features like panes of glass and doors that swing on hinges rather than slide from side to side, as well as the covering paint set these large, boxy buildings apart from earlier homes or workplaces. At first glance they look to be Taisho (1912-25), plus (into the early Showa-period) or minus (the late Meiji-period). Lights on, voices muffled inside, and new signage show that the buildings continue to do what they were built to do: bring together people for business or pleasure.
