In heaven (‘ in our native land’, as Aquinas always puts it), there will be the entirely satisfactory ‘sense of an object’, there will be light; but meanwhile, the only guarantee that it is God who is present to the self is that nothing else in particular is so present, and that no consistent set of words or ideas (about God or anything else) is at work.
