This early August afternoon flight from Chicago to Dublin brought the distinctive shape of Thunder Bay into view along the northeast Michigan shoreline with Lake Huron. The contours of the lake bottom, pattern of wave motion and the wind direction can conspire to suddenly produce dangerous conditions that have been responsible for sinking scores of ships of all sizes and of all historical periods. In recent years a national sanctuary has been declared to guard the wrecks from fortune hunters. Unlike salt-water conditions alive with wood-boring creatures that can demolish a wreck, here in cold, clear fresh water, the organic materials are well preserved.

Even with the ubiquity of Internet service to most places with sizable populations and reliable electricity supply, there is still an important place for bookstores to attract curious minds. That was true ever since J. Gutenberg started the mass production of written languages. Before literacy spread, the life of the mind was richest where accomplished speakers and motivated listeners gathered in large settings indoors or out, or in conversations around a table. After the first years of Covid-19, a large part of the Internet users have grown used to attending online events "live" or to playback ones that have been recorded for public engagement and as a public record.
This photo shows a table near the entrance to Schuler Books in Grand Rapids where authors and readers can get together for mutual benefit. Throughout the year the store hosts events to stir people's minds and hearts. In this picture mid-January there are three events showcased:
[online] "The Matter of Everything" Virtual Launch Event with author & physicist Suzie Sheehy
[live] A Local Author Night in Grand Rapids (three featured titles)
The Sun Daughter's Gift by Eva Finley
Open Mausoleum Door by Jennifer Morrison
Find a Place for Me by Deirdre Fagan
[live] "Telling Your Story Through Graphic Memoirs" with Author Elizabeth Trembley
