I had chauffeured Dad to an appointment, and we had some time to kill, so we stopped by the Sacred Heart Convent and made a few shots.
When he looked at this photo, he said with a smile, "Who's that? I'm going to have to get a new mirror!"
I love my Pop.
He'll start his 81st year in a few days, specifically, October 31.
He's a swell fellow - a real gentleman - with quite a life's story! Raised in poverty in rural West Alabama, he knows how to pick cotton by hand, remembers when electricity came to his family's house, the electrician's name who wired their house, and so many other hard-scrabble stories of a life unknown to many of us in this day & age.
After graduating High School (he was the first in his family to do so), with his dad's permission, he joined the United States Navy during the Korean War, and served aboard the U.S.S. Juneau, CLAA119, aka "The Galloping Ghost of the Korean Coast."
After his Navy enlistment, with the assistance of the G.I. Bill, he matriculated Auburn University (then known as Alabama Polytechnic Institute, or API), where he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree (again, first in his family to earn a university degree), met & married Mom after she graduated.
The first part of his career was devoted to selling livestock/farm animal pharmaceuticals, he then moved on to poultry supply sales, where he remained for many years until the company went belly-up.
He and Mom then returned to Graduate School (making my brother & me the original "Latchkey Kids"), he to Alabama A&M University, Mom to U of Alabama, where he earned a Master's and AA Teaching Certificate. (In Alabama, teachers don't get paid any more for earning terminal degrees, i.e. PhD, than they do earning an AA Teaching Certificate, so realizing there was no more Return for that Investment, he stopped there. He'd only need write a paper & take another class for his PhD.) Mom earned her Master's.
He then started the shop program at Hartselle Junior High School - from which he retired - and taught the boys & girls about the World of Work, Small Engine Repair, Woodworking (making bluebird houses was one project), was an Alabama State Certified Hunter Gun Safety Instructor, among other lessons.
He is also retired from the Alabama Air National Guard, where he served as a Procurement Officer until mandatory retirement. During his time teaching & in the ALARNG, he rode a motorcycle to & from work, and drill.
After that, he earned a Class A Commercial Driver License with Passenger endorsement, and drove buses for several years.
More recently, I bought a new iPad4 for him to go with his iMac.
Yeah... he's a pretty swooft dude, alright!

Burning up the incenses and worship the gods and my ancestors in the morning and evening are my important daily life. My respect could be sent to the gods when the incenses were burned up.
I painted this by watching the hands of myself. I painted my left hand first which was with line incenses, then painted right hand which was turning on the lighter. For I divided the whole session into several parts, so it look not so naturally.( ArtRage2, on iPad4)
早上和晚上燒香拜神與祖先是我的日常生活的重要部份。對神明的崇敬可隨著點燃的香而呈送給神明。
我畫的是我自己的手。我先畫左手拿香，再畫右手點火。因為分了幾個部份來畫，所以结果不是十分的自然。

it took me countless sleepless nights to finish my own creation of loombands. it's a masterpiece. hahaha!
