KUO I-Chen - Taipei, Taiwan
Sound Installation, Video Installation
Once upon a time, an airplane transported us from mundane life to where dreams and unknowns awaited, but following the terrorist attacks of September 11th the vehicle to cloud nine has since turned into the causes of fear, panic and anxiety. Here, a life-sized shadow of an airplane will be projected onto the ceiling of the supermarket. Accompanied by the sound of roaring engines, it intermittently moves across the ceiling as if an airplane slowly approaches, flies overhead and disappears into the horizon again. But the silhouette is so overwhelming, at times it seems that the airplane is not going to fly over, but will fly into and "invade" the shopping place. The viewers are thus engaged in a visual narrative that weaves reality and illusion seamlessly.
This work attempts to "invade" the inner realms of "reality" and "illusion," and expose the conflicts and inter-dependence between them. In an era of hyper-reality, they are no longer distinguished by the metaphysical characteristics.
KUO I-Chen (Taipei, Taiwan) works primarily on interactive units, single channel video and performance art. Drawn by the ever-shifting relationship between us and the environment, his pieces play on the comfort and suffocation produced by our immediate surroundings, and re-interpret the dependence and anxiety of modern-day dwellers towards institutional cages. In 2005, Kuo became the youngest artist ever to represent Taiwan in the Venice Biennial; his works have since been shown in various international exhibitions.
