Picture here a man in Varanasi works an elaborately complex loom. The handwoven Banarasi sari, with its intricate designs, often with accents of gold or silver thread -- is widely sought after, especially by brides seeking to standout in India's lively wedding season. I am not sure how these producers stay afloat when they face competition from modern power looms that can produce silk saris cheaper and faster.
This shot is from a neighborhood in Varanasi's northeast, known as Pili Kothi and is one of a handful of weaving communities in the city. Most people know Varanasi for its many temples, Sadhus and bustling ghats along the Ganges River, but if you visit, also check out the neighborhoods that produce some of the world's finest silk saris. Note the paper pattern guide at the top right of the image, that is the trade secret for each individual shop.
Fiercely missing the travel adventures, I love so much. Whenever that happens, I return to photos from past trips to relive those memories. One place in particular, Varanasi India, so wonderfully foreign, chaotic, and colorful that its always fun to explore again. This time I found several images I had not examined before so was excited to see them again for the first time. I know I have been slow getting to see all your great work, but hope to dive back into all the amazing images in the Flickrsphere soon! Stay safe out there!
Varanasi is known throughout India for its production of very fine silk saris. Weaving is typically done within the household, and for generations they have passed on their craft from father to son, hand-weaving silk on room-sized foot-powered looms. Varanasi saris are adorned with intricate designs like this one here being embroidered by hand.

The state of Rajasthan has an aura of royalty. Its capital city, Jaipur attracts visitors from all over the world. The Pink City or Jaipur has a unique piece of architectural masterpiece – the Hawa Mahal. The panoramic view of this five storied Hawa Mahal that resembles the crown of Lord Krishna made of peacock feathers looks perfectly delightful. Hawa Mahal stands tall with Intricate designs, domed canopies, floral patterns, fluted pillars, fine stone inlay and arches. Hawa Mahal, made of red and pink sandstone, is a fusion of Rajput and Islamic styles of architecture and here it looks beautiful when pictured with bright blue sky!
This unique attraction is a very popular stop on the Niagara Parkway and is photographed almost as often as the Falls!
The planted face is maintained by Niagara Parks horticulture staff, while the mechanism is kept in working order by Ontario Hydro, the organization that originally built the clock. The intricate designs on the face of the timepiece are created with up to 16,000 carpet bedding plants. The floral design is changed twice each year, featuring viola in the Spring and four cultivars of Alternanthera along with green and grey forms of Santolina Sage during the Summer and Fall. California Golden Privet and Blue Festuca Grass may be used for contrast.
The grounds surrounding the clock feature bedding displays and a tower at the back of the clock houses Westminster chimes that greet each quarter hour. If the door into the tower is open, you can take a glimpse at the clock mechanism and enjoy photographs that show the history of almost every face design all the way back to 1950.
The Adonis blue butterfly truly is a sight to behold! With its striking azure-blue wings and delicate markings, it's like a gem fluttering through the air. Its beauty is captivating and often leaves observers in awe of nature's intricate designs. It's amazing how something so small can bring such joy and wonder to those who are lucky enough to witness it.
This pictograph panel is in the Horseshoe Canyon section of Canyonlands National Park.
From the National Park Service:
"Horseshoe Canyon contains some of the most significant rock markings in North America, including well-preserved, life-sized figures with intricate designs. Ancestral Puebloan rock markings found in Horseshoe Canyon are most commonly painted in a style known as “Barrier Canyon.” This style is believed to date to the Late Archaic period, from 2000 BCE to 500 CE (Common Era). During this time, nomadic groups of hunter-gatherers made Horseshoe Canyon their seasonal home."
The National Park Service mentions that these figures are "life-sized". Since there isn't anything to give them scale in this shot, I'd estimate some to be 5-6 feet and some quite a bit larger.
Last of my random picks. I have an idea percolating for another series starting tomorrow.
Leh Palace also known as Lachen Palkar Palace is a former royal palace overlooking the city of Leh in Ladakh, India. It was constructed circa 1600 by Sengge Namgyal. The palace was abandoned when Dogra forces took control of Ladakh in the mid-19th century and forced the royal family to move to Stok Palace.
It is nine storeys high; the upper floors accommodated the royal family, while the lower floors held stables and store rooms. Much of the palace is in deteriorated condition, and little survives of its interior decorations. The Palace Museum holds a rich collection of jewellery, ornaments, ceremonial dresses and crowns. Tibetan thangka or paintings, which are more than 450 years old, with intricate designs still retain the bright colours derived from crushed and powdered gems and stones.

Ice etched in intricate designs
on the window by which I stand,
trying to catch the elusive
brilliance of winter's light
on a carefully held prism
Coaxing rays of crystalline
luminosity to paint
my world with pretty colors
and vibrant hues -
to cover and distort
my inner pain and give
credence to my facade.
But the winter light is shadowed
by blues and grays, casting
a hazy fog over all that I know,
and those brilliant colors
coninue to dance
away, far away,
leaving me still standing
by a frosty window,
shivering and cold,
praying for the warmth
of summer days.

Grand Central Terminal (GCT; also referred to as Grand Central Station or simply as Grand Central) is a commuter, rapid transit (and former intercity) railroad terminal at 42nd Street and Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan in New York City, United States. Built by and named for the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad in the heyday of American long-distance passenger rail travel, it covers 48 acres (19 ha) and has 44 platforms, more than any other railroad station in the world. Its platforms, all below ground, serve 41 tracks on the upper level and 26 on the lower, though the total number of tracks along platforms and in rail yards exceeds 100.
The terminal serves commuters traveling on the Metro-North Railroad to Westchester, Putnam, and Dutchess counties in New York, as well as to Fairfield and New Haven counties in Connecticut. Until 1991, the terminal served Amtrak, which moved to nearby Pennsylvania Station upon completion of the Empire Connection. The East Side Access project is underway to bring Long Island Rail Road service to the terminal.
Grand Central Terminal has intricate designs both on its inside and outside. In addition, it contains a vast interior main concourse. The terminal is one of the world's most visited tourist attractions, with 21.9 million visitors in 2013.
Unlike other Metro-North stations, Grand Central Terminal is not owned by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, but by a private company known as Midtown TDR Ventures.
People spend hours making these intricate designs on the street only to have them destroyed when religious parades go by. Once the parades have passed by, they immediately begin to create another design for the same thing to happen all over again.
A Hellebore is an evergreen perennial flowering plants in the family Ranunculaceae. Despite names such as 'winter rose' 'Christmas rose' and 'Lenten rose', hellebores are not closely related to the rose family (Rosaceae). Many hellebore species are poisonous.
All of that aside, the first time I saw a Hellebore flower, I was astounded by the intricate designs in the center of the blossom. It seemed as if an artist had designed the curving green folds and cupcake-like center. What a work of art!

At its lower levels and at every pier, the interior of the mosque is lined with more than 20,000 handmade İznik style ceramic tiles, made at İznik (the ancient Nicaea) in more than fifty different tulip designs. The tiles at lower levels are traditional in design, while at gallery level their design becomes flamboyant with representations of flowers, fruit and cypresses. The tiles were made under the supervision of the İznik master. The price to be paid for each tile was fixed by the sultan's decree, while tile prices in general increased over time. As a result, the quality of the tiles used in the building decreased gradually.
The upper levels of the interior are dominated by blue paint. More than 200 stained glass windows with intricate designs admit natural light, today assisted by chandeliers. On the chandeliers, ostrich eggs are found that were meant to avoid cobwebs inside the mosque by repelling spiders. The decorations include verses from the Qur'an, many of them made by Seyyid Kasim Gubari, regarded as the greatest calligrapher of his time. The floors are covered with carpets, which are donated by the faithful and are regularly replaced as they wear out. The many spacious windows confer a spacious impression. The casements at floor level are decorated with opus sectile. Each exedra has five windows, some of which are blind. Each semi-dome has 14 windows and the central dome 28 (four of which are blind). The coloured glass for the windows was a gift of the Signoria of Venice to the sultan.

This picturesque square is the heart of the town's historical center and offers a delightful blend of history, architecture, and charm.
Jurisics Square holds great historical significance, as it is named after Miklós Jurisics, the renowned defender of Kőszeg against the Turks in 1532. The square is part of the old town, which was strategically important due to its location on the border of Austria and the Habsburg Empire.
One of the highlights of Jurisics Square is the Heroes' Gate, a remnant of the old town defenses. This gate served as the main entrance to the castle-town and now stands as a memorial to the soldiers who fought against the Turks and in World War I. Take a moment to appreciate the plaques and pay homage to the brave souls who defended Kőszeg.
As you stroll through Jurisics Square, you'll be captivated by the architectural wonders that line its streets. The Sgraffito House, with its Renaissance facade, stands out as a true gem. This building showcases intricate designs and adds a touch of elegance to the square. Another notable structure is the Town Hall, the oldest town hall in Hungary, dating back to the 14th century. Its facade adorned with coat of arms adds to the historical charm of the square.

""""Growing up in a small town (Wamel) in the Netherlands, Iris van Herpen expressed herself through classical ballet, painting and playing the violin, before discovering the transformative nature of fashion. With Time Magazine naming her 3D printed dresses as one of the 50 best innovations of 2020, she is a fashion innovator and designer who reimagines fashion’s potential with her unique, futuristic designs. She graduated from ArtEZ Academy in Arnhem, The Netherlands, studying Fashion Design and worked with Alexander McQueen and Dutch Artist Claudy Jongstra at the start of her career, before founding her eponymous label in 2007.
Since then she has successfully placed her brand at the frontier of tech innovation by experimenting with different materials and manipulating fabrics to create surrealist designs. Although technology is a big aspect of her work, Iris simply sees it as a vehicle that drives her creative process and helps realise her ideas, and instead considers nature to be at the core of everything she does. Producing only a limited number of curated designs every year, she envisions an outcome first without limiting her imagination to the available resources and existing design practices, and then works with her design team to realise the outcomes. Her work is also highly collaborative in nature and she often joins forces with multidisciplinary artists across all boards, from dance to scientists to architects, to push boundaries within fashion. Her collaborations have led her to work with creatives like Björk, Nick Knight, Jolan van der Wieland Neri Oxman and architects such as Philip Beesley and Benthem and Crouwel Architects.
Iris’ designs are viewed more often as fine art than as clothing, and have found home in various museums like Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York and the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, and Fédération française de la couture has shown her collections at the Paris Fashion Week since January 2011.
In her words, her designs focus on organic femininity; intricate designs that are created with the purpose to empower, celebrate femininity and innovate, all at the same time."""""

Durga Puja pandal architecture is a vibrant and dynamic art form, deeply rooted in Bengali tradition but continuously evolving with contemporary trends. The pandal serves as the temporary abode for the goddess Durga during the annual festival and is often an elaborate and creative expression of architectural ingenuity.
Materials Used
Bamboo: The traditional material used for the structure of the pandal, which is highly flexible and abundant.
Cloth and Paper: These are used for decorations, draping, and wall coverings. They are often painted or printed with intricate designs.
Plaster of Paris and Clay: Used for creating idols and sculptures.
Fiberglass and Metal: These are often used in modern pandals for creating stronger, more durable structures.
1. Traditional Designs
Bengali Folk Art: Traditional pandals often draw from rural Bengal’s heritage, incorporating local materials like bamboo, jute, and clay. These pandals typically feature motifs inspired by nature, mythology, and folk art.
Sholar Kaaj: This is a technique involving intricate designs made from shola (a type of plant) and is used to create ornaments, canopies, and decorations within the pandal.
Terracotta and Wooden Crafts: Terracotta sculptures, wooden carvings, and images of mythological figures are common in older pandals.
2. Modern Interpretations
Innovative Materials: Modern pandals often use contemporary materials like fiberglass, metal, and plastic alongside traditional materials. For instance, large fiberglass idols of Durga are increasingly used, along with innovative lighting, mirrors, and glasswork.
Thematic Pandals: Many pandals these days are built around a specific theme. The themes can range from environmental issues (like conservation of rivers or wildlife) to technological advancements, historical events, or even popular culture. The architecture of the pandal is designed to reflect this theme, often incorporating multimedia elements.
Eco-friendly Designs: In recent years, there has been a push for sustainable and eco-friendly pandals. These are often constructed using biodegradable materials such as bamboo, paper, and cloth, with designs that minimize environmental impact.
3. Architectural Features
Structural Form: Traditionally, pandals were dome-shaped or cylindrical, but now they can take on all sorts of avant-garde shapes, from temples to spaceships to replicas of famous monuments like the Eiffel Tower or the Taj Mahal.
Facade and Entrances: The entrance of the pandal is often grand and acts as a focal point of the design. It may incorporate arches, columns, and ornate carvings, often reflecting the temple architecture of India.
Ceilings and Roofs: The roofs of pandals are a key area for artistic expression, ranging from elaborate canopies made of flowers to highly stylized, often abstract, designs using light and color.
Lighting: Pandals are spectacularly lit, with millions of light bulbs strung up in intricate patterns. The lighting not only enhances the aesthetics but also creates a divine ambiance, especially at night.
Interior Layout: The interior of the pandal is designed to accommodate the idol of Durga, with a focus on creating a spiritual environment. The idol is often placed on a raised platform, surrounded by artistic depictions of various deities, animals, and scenes from mythology.
4. Regional Variations

"In the heart of the Fairelands, where the veil between the realms of the living and the dead grows thin, lies Öndheim (the Realm of the Spirits, in Old Norse). This fantastical realm, cloaked in mist and mystery, serves as a crossroads for souls traversing from one world to another.
In Öndheim, time dances to its own tune, and the landscape is a tapestry woven from the threads of dreams and memories. Ancient trees whisper secrets to the wind, towering mountains rise majestically against the backdrop of an endless sky. Structures carved from solid rock and adorned with precious gold dot the landscape, their intricate designs telling tales of ancient civilizations long gone. At the center of it all stands the Dòmbjalla, a majestic bell where souls gather to await their fate.
Deep within the mountain lies a secret chamber known only to a select few. Here, amidst the towering peaks and shimmering gold structures, the Fjǫrsteði, the Forge of Life burns eternal, tended by ancient Titans whose duty is to keep the pulsating heart of Ondheim alive.
The entrance to the chamber is hidden amidst the gardens of the Realm and the Bell of Judjment, guarded by ancient wards and powerful enchantments. Few have ever dared to venture into its depths, and only those who are determined to fight the Unweaver can access it, for the secrets it holds are known only to those who wield the most powerful weapon to defeat it once and for all: Hope.
Among the spirits who dwell in Öndheim are those who await judgment, their ethereal forms drifting through the golden valleys and rocky crags. Some wander alone, lost in contemplation of their past lives, while others gather in small groups, seeking solace in the company of their fellow souls." - Kadaj Yoshikawa

The Origins of the Hmong
The Hmong claim to originate from the Yellow River region of China, in around 3000 BC; though some experts state it was later than this. It wasn’t until the 1800s that they began to migrate; first spreading to Indochina, then to Northern Laos, Burma, Thailand, and Vietnam, to avoid oppression.
After the Vietnamese war, many more Hmong people migrated to Thailand as refugees. However, due to the fact that several had joined the communist party during the war, they were persecuted. To this day, some are still denied citizenship rights, or proper titles to the land they cultivate.
In the 21st century, there are Hmong people living across the world; including Australia, France, and the US. However, 95% still live in Asia.
Culture
The Hmong have a rich, fascinating culture. Traditionally, a shaman leads the tribe and plays a vital role in the complex funeral and marriage rites. During times of illness, he will enter a trance to visit the underworld and relocate the soul of the ill person in question; and at times, he even undertakes a political role within the village.
The New Year is particularly important to the Hmong and is celebrated on the 30th day of the 12th lunar month. During this time, the family and ancestral spirits are honored; and unmarried boys and girls are encouraged to play games together, in the hope of sparking a marital match.
The Importance of Textiles
Textiles play an integral role in Hmong culture. Indeed, they’re considered so importantly that girls as young as five are taught to embroider, to prepare them for the task of creating marriage and funerary fabrics in later life. They learn how to perform the more complex processes of indigo dying, garment construction, and applique at a later stage.
Hmong Fabrics – Story Cloths
Hmong fabrics are renowned across the world; thanks to their rich colors and intricate designs. Their story cloths are particularly celebrated. Prior to the 20th century, the Hmong had no form of written language, and instead, communicated ideas and narratives onto beautifully intricate pieces of cloth.
This practice wasn’t limited to females – even the male members of the village would create story cloths, to convey the story of their people to the outside world, and in some cases, to reveal the extent of their persecution.

Durga Puja is the most important festival in West Bengal and Kolkata. It is a time for celebration, devotion, and community spirit. During this time, the city is transformed into a vibrant and colorful spectacle, with Durga Puja pandals (also known as mandaps) set up all over the city.
These pandals are often elaborate and thematic, showcasing the creativity and craftsmanship of local artisans. They are also a major tourist attraction, drawing visitors from all over India and the world.

In mid-March - late winter for this area - the trees hadn't leafed out yet which left this most interesting specimen fairly naked to the visitors' gaze. The intricate designs in the trunk and roots were just too interesting to pass up. The whole scene has a bit of fairy tale to it.
The Georgian Doors of Dublin can be traced back to the 1700s, when the old medieval city began growing and becoming quite prosperous. Rapid expansion led to remodeling of the city’s streets and squares, and a need to develop outside the city center — especially to create residential areas.
This building boom was carefully controlled however, and each developer was given strict structural and design restrictions for their buildings. The resulting style (and time period) has come to be known as Georgian Dublin — named for the four kings that ruled during the period (Kings George I-IV; 1714-1830).
To break from the strict architectural uniformity, residents started adding their own individual touches to set their houses apart from others. These included fancy knockers, intricate designs or fanlights above the door, and most noticeably, front doors painted in varying colors.
The image showcases an interior wall of a house in Herculaneum, adorned with exquisite paintings and mosaics. The wall is divided into several sections, each displaying distinct artistic elements.
The centerpiece of the wall is a rectangular mosaic panel framed by intricate designs in vibrant colors. The mosaic depicts two figures, likely representing mythological or historical characters. The figure on the left appears to be a male, possibly a deity or hero, and the figure on the right is a female, possibly a goddess or noblewoman. They stand under an ornate arch with detailed patterns in blue, green, and gold hues. The background of the arch includes geometric and floral motifs.
To the left of the central panel, there is another section of mosaic art. This mosaic depicts a scene with an animal, possibly a deer or similar creature, set against a detailed natural background. The colors here are predominantly blue and green, with intricate designs that complement the central panel.
Surrounding the mosaics are frescoes with different levels of preservation. To the right of the central mosaic, the wall shows a reddish area with what appears to be a large vase or plant in the lower section. The fresco here is partially damaged but still displays vibrant colors and intricate details.
The upper section of the wall features areas of cracked and peeling plaster, revealing the underlying stone structure. This gives a sense of the ancient age and the preservation challenges of the site.
The wall's uppermost section reveals a stone texture, with small, roughly cut stones creating a patterned background. This stonework adds to the historical ambiance, showing the construction techniques used in ancient Herculaneum.
Overall, the wall is a stunning example of ancient Roman art and architecture, blending detailed mosaics with fresco paintings, all set against a backdrop of aged stone and plaster.

In a cozy little coffee shop nestled on a bustling street, there were three coffee dallahs that sat proudly on the counter. Each morning, they were filled with the finest coffee and served eager customers, but they had a secret—they could talk.
The first dallah, tall and slender, was named Darla. Darla was a bit of a diva and loved to brag about how she brewed the best coffee. The second, short and stout, was called Dave. Dave was the comedian of the group, always cracking jokes. The third, a medium-sized dallah with intricate designs, was named Dotty. Dotty was sweet and loved to keep the peace between her two friends.
One morning, as the sun peeked through the window and the first customers trickled in, Darla began her usual boasting. "I make the richest, most aromatic coffee in town," she declared, steam puffing out proudly.
Dave rolled his spout. "Oh, Darla, the only thing richer than your coffee is your imagination!"
Dotty giggled, trying to keep the peace. "Come on, you two. We all know we make a great team."
But Darla was on a roll. "My coffee has won awards, I'll have you know!"
"Yeah, the award for most overcooked beans!" Dave quipped, making Dotty chuckle.
Just then, a barista came over and poured fresh coffee into each of them. As the barista walked away, Darla started to sputter. "What's happening? I feel... I feel... weak!"
Dave and Dotty looked at each other, concerned. "Are you okay, Darla?" Dotty asked.
Dave tried to lighten the mood. "Looks like someone finally noticed your over-inflated ego and gave you decaf!"
Darla gasped. "Decaf? Oh, the horror!"
The three dallahs were interrupted by the barista, who returned with a fresh bag of coffee beans. "Sorry about that, Darla. I accidentally gave you decaf. Here, let me fix that."
As the barista refilled Darla with the strongest coffee they had, Darla sighed in relief. "Thank goodness! I thought I'd lost my touch."
Dave couldn't resist. "Well, Darla, you might still lose your touch, but at least now you'll lose it with dignity."
Dotty chimed in with a smile, "Let's just be grateful we're all full of beans—literally!"
And so, the three coffee dallahs continued their morning routine, filled with laughter, friendly banter, and, of course, the best coffee in town.
Meet Caramelo...
Seville, the capital of Andalusia, has a rich history of horse-drawn carriages dating back to the 18th century. These traditional carriages have been an integral part of the city’s culture and tourism, offering a unique and romantic way to explore Seville’s historic streets and landmarks.
Seville’s horse-drawn carriages are typically elegant and ornate, with intricate designs and decorations. The carriages are often pulled by well-groomed horses, and the drivers are skilled and knowledgeable about the city’s history and landmarks.
Thanks, John Frisch for the hint about how the aspen tree trunks get such intricate designs. Some artists just have a natural talent.

I didn't set out Sunday, late afternoon, thinking I would find a butterfly. I was planning a late afternoon - early evening look at local wetlands, searching for fall migrants: Grebes, various uncommon duck species, etc.
These are amazingly small creatures, but with such intricate designs, and apparently a real hardiness and resilience. These had to be the last open flowers in the meadow.
