From the Internet
In the mid 1800’s many of the early colonists that came to Texas were Lutheran. The beginning of First Ev. Lutheran can be traced back to one of these colonists writing to the Seminary of Saint Christchona near Basel, Switzerland and complaining of a lack of spiritual leadership on the island.
This letter resulted in the seminary sending two Lutheran pastors to Texas.
These two pastors organized Galveston families into what would become, in the fall of 1850, the First German Evangelical Church.
In Galveston during that time, the center of culture was the Lyceum Hall, located on the corner of Winnie and Bath Avenue (25th Street). It was in the Lyceum that early services were held. This Lyceum still sits on the church grounds today and its cornerstone still reads,
Knowledge is Power
which reminds us of the great scriptural truth,
And the truth shall make you free
With the year 1900, first Lutheran would celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of its founding. The anniversary event never was held, for in September, Galveston suffered the great 1900 storm. The editor of the Tribune describes First Lutheran on that never-to-be-forgotten Sunday that followed September 8, 1900:
Go with me over heaps of ruined homes to the churches – the German Lutheran church has much damage to the interior furnishings, but the old Lyceum is in perfect order and is a shelter for the homeless and desolate.
During that difficult time – as today – First Lutheran played a part in serving the needs of the people of Galveston.
From the original building, a new structure was constructed in 1915. The building still stands today as a reminder of the earliest history of the congregation.
First Lutheran was responsible for several missions on the island:

2020 one photo each day
Sorry for not commenting today but I've been without the Internet for more than 6 hours thanks to a thunderstorm I think.
This one is a bit of processing magic. I finally found a new program that can create what I see in my mind when I look at a photo. I loved this scene, but the colors weren't as vibrant as I wanted them to be, nor was the sky interesting enough. After about an hour, voila. The fort in St. Augustine has a more lovely backdrop of clouds, and more vibrant tones in the water and sand, which makes this photo really pop. I enjoyed working on this one!
I won't be on here much this week. Thursday starts extended hours at my store for the Labor Day sale, and hopefully I will be very busy. We're also about to be hit by what should be a tropical storm in another day, packing winds of up to 65 mph and soaking rains. Worse case scenario, no work Thursday! Might have no power, AC or internet, either! Please pray for us down here in Florida, especially those on the west coast, where they are expected to get up to 15" of rain! Welcome to sunny Florida!
In that forgotten happy era without the Internet, it was the State Republican Library of the Ukrainian SSR named after the CPSU.
After the declaration of independence, the library became known as the State Library of Ukraine, and in 1994, according to the Presidential Decree, it received the status of the National Parliamentary Library of Ukraine.
We are flying tomorrow, I will have intermintent internet access next week. I would love to take Nubia with me but she's too delicate to be carried in a bag all day long!!
Up on a hill beyond Glass Beach is a cemetery that dates back to the 19th century, a burial ground for workers at the McBryde Sugar Company's plantation. The small cemetery overlooking the ocean is filled with gravestones in Japanese and English that was only recently rediscovered.

The Internet at our house had gone down earlier this afternoon. Spent an afternoon trouble shooting with AT&T tech support to no avail. It appeared to be something to do with my broadband modem, which has been with us for almost 10 years. Hopefully, the technician would come tomorrow morning and replace it. Until then, I can only post my daily photo from my phone. Without Internet, I feel like our house is in chaos like this photo and I am just the little guy at the left hand corner feeling helpless. Credit to my wife for taking this photo of me and the "House of Chaos".

Having become bored with all my "retro" film work I decided to go for color and digital for a while.
Hi everyone. Whenever I choose a title for a photo I post here, I check the internet for that title. It is amazing to know that it is difficult somewhat to come up with a new title. Here I chose the title "Hand Dancing" then google told me that this title is a form of American art
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hand_dancing
I then chose to write "Dancing Hand" instead.
While I was looking for some information about the title, I came across a very romantic song entitled "Dancing with your ghost" by Sasha Sloan. Beautiful lyrics and singing.. Here it is for your pleasure:
Please tell me what you think about my photo and about Sasha's song.

Yes, suddenly we are at the end of another month, and a third of the year has flown past already. But I'll remember April as the month that released us from the long, hard winter. It started in mid October, a full six months ago - and it took most of April to thaw the ground out enough for Spring buds to appear. Now, at the end of the month the freezing nights have returned, and the Spring blossom is suffering! Hopefully I look to May for kinder times ;o)
April has seen us completing the move from a quite large home network of Windows XP computers to a much slimmed-down network of Windows 10 machines. Every day holds its surprises ... will my laptop lose its sound? will it declare I have no internet connection? will ANY of the machines recognise each other on the Home Group? Such daily excitement!!
But through it all I have managed to keep on taking photographs, and working on them on the new 64-bit computer platform. And I have just added Topaz Studio to Photoshop ... yet more to learn and to play with! I have also started to post some background articles to a new website www.universaltheorist.org/ I am hoping to post regularly, linking a Flickr posting to a background piece every week or so.
And Flickr has been bought by SmugMug (who thought of that name I wonder?) and by the end of May we will be 'migrated' to SmugMug servers. I look at the TSB Bank here in the UK as they flounder, migrating their customers to a new platform, and shudder! I hope I am proved wrong, but I am downloading zips of all my albums as a back-up. Not brilliant as a plan, but the best idea I can come up with. The thought of rebuilding my Flickr 'home' is not a happy one! Despite all the bad decisions of the current owners, Flickr remains the place where I love to post my images, the place where I check out what my Flickr friends and contacts have been creating, and the place where I can always find inspiration, a helping hand, and friendship. What more could I ask for?
Treat us gently and respectfully, SmugMug! Not everyone is out to 'monetise' our Flickr images ;o)
