Maryland Home Remodeling Elegant Family Room in Bethesda Maryland

Remodeling Your Kitchen

Your kitchen is the center of your house-not only the place where you prepare food, but also where the family gathers and guests gravitate to be entertained.

Making it the most pleasant and convenient place you can is not only a lifestyle issue, but it also can be a financial boon. When you sell your home, a modern, attractive kitchen is one of the biggest factors in determining its value to buyers in Maryland.

According to a study done by Remodeling magazine, a cosmetic kitchen remodeling job pays back more than any other home remodeling project. The average homeowner who sells a house within one year of updating the kitchen can expect to recoup 80 percent of the investment in the job.

If you’re considering putting on an addition to your home, be sure to consult city hall before you get to work. Building permits are required in most cities, and plans must be reviewed before they the respective permits can be obtained. A survey or scale drawing or blueprint usually must be submitted by the owner or applicant. If you’re working with a contractor, be sure to discuss your project in order to gather the necessary information to ensure your addition will conform to your local building laws and codes.

When submitting your blueprint, be sure to include the following: lot size including map of adjacent streets, two sets of plans, and dimensions of all existing and proposed structures. Rules and regulations governing the construction and inclusion of setbacks, footings, smoke detectors, will vary from town to town. Separate plumbing, heating, mechanical and electrical permits for your addition may be required as well.

"Summer Pond, Fall Plum Tree," 2011

acrylic on canvas 15.5 x 29.25

A lot of fun trying to make the orange evening light of fall work with the clear evening light of summer out the doors on the left.

Spreuer Bridge is a covered, wooden footbridge that begins in the Mills Square in old town and ends in Pfister Alley. Also called the Mills Bridge, it is a popular spot for tourists who wish to see both the stunning architecture and the interior paintings.

The original bridge was constructed in the 13th century but was destroyed by a flood in 1566. It was rebuilt shortly thereafter, which was when the paintings were added. The paintings are the largest known paintings of the Dance of Death during the late Middle Ages.

Kaspar Meglinger directed the 67 paintings from 1616 to 1637. Most paintings contain information about the donors, including their names and family coat-of-arms. Some also have portraits of the donors. Forty-five of those paintings have survived. The paintings at Spreuer Bridge have also created the nickname "The Dance of Death Bridge."

Visitors are welcome to walk across the pedestrian bridge at any time, though the paintings are best viewed with natural daylight.

Hand painted enamels on reclaimed wood.

I'm in the process of redesigning this $10.00 chandelier. More pictures to come as I finish. The black hanging prisms are really mini Christmas ornaments.

14x11 acrylic on canvas

This is remembering the first whole room I had for a studio. On the second floor of a wonderful old farmhouse we rented for almost nothing. Surrounded by flower farms and dairyland-its second floor height put me almost in the low clouds that blew over the dunes from the ocean. A magical place.

"That Gentlemen portrays an elderly African-American man named Tom Clark, who was the neighbor of Mr. Wyeth. Although his face is hidden from the viewer, I’m compelled to further explore this composition with fresh eyes, looking for clues that express his personality. Mr. Wyeth wrote about Mr. Clark, stating: “His voice is gentle, his wit is keen, and his wisdom enormous.” This portrait is a constant reminder of how we should sometimes stop and take notice of the quiet, unsung heroes in our life.

Karen A. Colbert - Teaching Programs Intern"

A visual artist, primarily a realist painter, working predominantly in a regionalist style. He was one of the best-known U.S. artists of the middle 20th century. In his art, Wyeth's favorite subjects were the land and people around him. (He worked mainly in watercolor or egg tempera)

Lot Notes:

"Throughout his career, Andrew Wyeth remained loyal to the people in his immediate surroundings, rarely ever traveling beyond the environs of mid-coast Maine and Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania.

This devotion to location and subject allowed Wyeth to completely immerse himself in his art, lending sincerity to his painting style without being sentimental. Yet, even while depicting personal friends and places, Wyeth remains the impartial spectator, creating narratives that are deeply charged with his own emotion but also open to the viewer's interpretation."
