The Marquette Building

Architect: Holabird & Roche

Date:1895

Style:Chicago School of Architecture

Address:140 South Dearborn Street

Patron:George A. Fuller Company (Shepard and Peter Brooks)

Height:205’ (17 Floors)

Exterior Material:Terra Cotta

Structural Material:Steel

Program:Commercial Offices, Retail Stores

The Marquette Building was one of Chicago’s earliest skyscrapers, and one of the strongest living examples of the Chicago School of Architecture, which is defined by mainly commercial buildings, minimal exterior ornament and large plate windows. These buildings were generally composed of terra cotta cladding and an expressed steel structure, which is consistent with the Marquette Building. The exterior is expressed in three different segments; a heavy base, a long vertical shaft, and a cornice at the top.

The building was named after the explorer Jacques Marquette. Owen Aldis, Marquette’s son, managed all aspects of the planning and construction. The interior contains a frieze that depicts Jacques Marquette’s adventures.

We enjoyed Automotive Rhythms’ last media trip of the year with industry friends and Kia executives, who allowed us to experience firsthand the all-electric EV6 GT, the most powerful production vehicle the company has ever built. The dual motor e-AWD setup consists of a 77.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, a 160kW front motor, and a 270kW rear motor for a total system output of 576-horsepower and 545 lb.-ft. of torque. The $61,400 EV6 GT with AWD elevates the brand’s performance stature to a higher degree as it accelerates 0-to-60 mph in 3.4 seconds. Are you ready for silent gallops across runways and “Movement that Inspires” from Kia’s electric performance perspective? We certainly are!

Completed in 1888 as the winning design from a national competition, the Capitol's style is Renaissance Revival, based on the architecture of 15th-century Italy and characterized by classical orders, round arches and symmetrical composition. The structural exterior walls are "sunset red" granite, quarried just 50 miles from the site. Additional structural support is provided by masonry walls and cast iron columns and beams.

The Texas star in the center of the dome is actually eight feet in diameter and looms 266 feet above the Rotunda's floor. The word "Texas" surrounds the star.

At the time of it's completion, it was the 7-th largest building in the world, proving that - yes, everything is bigger here in Texas. And we are all very proud that our capitol is taller than the Capitol in Washington, D. C :)

In Tibetan Buddhism, yak-butter lamps represent the light of wisdom that pushes back against the darkness of ignorance. (Some monasteries build a separate room for the butter lamps to reduce the possibility of accidental fire.)

in 1903, mr. beck joined a 21-member committee that would form and operate ontario hydro electric commission. two years later, he became the unofficial minister of power, chairing a board of enquiry on the matter of private vs. public electricity grids.

an early advocate of publicly owned electricity grids, beck opposed the privately owned companies he felt did not serve the needs of the public adequately, and put forth the slogan, “dona naturae pro populo sunt” (latin for “the gifts of nature are for the public”).

in 1906, the legislature passed a bill introduced by beck, 'officially' creating the hydro-electric power commission of ontario, the first publicly-owned utility in the world. beck was promptly elected as chairman, and went on to oversee the first production of hydroelectricity in the province of ontario.

on october 11, 1910, beck held the first ceremonial “switch-on” in berlin (now kitchener). pressing a switch, beck stood back as a street sign that announced “for the people” lit up and the town cheered.
