The Amish society is built on helping each other out, and one of the most stereotypical symbols of that ideology is a barn-raising. I haven’t witnessed one of them, but yesterday we happened on this group of neighbors helping to replace a barn roof.

For Labor Day Weekend in 2021, I traveled back to my hometown of Lancaster, PA and took various photos throughout the county. This particular shot was taken of my LEGO Amish magnifigure placed in the grass by the Intercourse road sign in Intercourse, PA that I shot as I had my rental car parked alongside the road.

In human intercourse the tragedy begins, not when there is misunderstanding about words, but when silence is not understood.

Annus Mirabilis

Sexual intercourse began

In nineteen sixty-three

(which was rather late for me) -

Between the end of the "Chatterley" ban

And the Beatles' first LP.

Up to then there'd only been

A sort of bargaining,

A wrangle for the ring,

A shame that started at sixteen

And spread to everything.

Then all at once the quarrel sank:

Everyone felt the same,

And every life became

A brilliant breaking of the bank,

A quite unlosable game.

So life was never better than

In nineteen sixty-three

(Though just too late for me) -

Between the end of the "Chatterley" ban

And the Beatles' first LP.

talk show: an oil painting by jaisini by yustas kotz-gottlieb

Talk Show is a painting that proves the idea that we live in a post-modern world with the apparent loss of any reasonable hope for alternative to the present. In Talk Show, immediacy unites with immortality, trivial with profound. In our days the long myth of immortality is replaced by the myth of immediacy. The substitution of the trivial for the profound for many was a loss, rather than a gain, although, the will to be immediate speaks more directly to our lives. Jaisini unites the two principles, searching for unique ways that can create this double effect of a physical lowland, united with the philosophical purity of mind. Talk Show has the significance of biblical wisdom based on a street scene. In Talk Show, Jaisini pictures not the dark side’ of people, but the substantial one, when sex became ‘the lyricism of the masses’. The picture shows that we live in a more cynical, realistic time by means of parody. The new cynicism is the old one. The work is timeless and can relate to anyone. Talk Show has the analogous environment as in the work called Show Time; the crowd representatives and the image that centers the crowd’s attention. In Talk Show, it is the two dogs in an intercourse that attracts the attention of different people of the crowd. In the painting we can clearly see the interlocked line of composition. This line flows freely as an unconscious line. The absence of an ‘end’ in Jaisini’s composition may be the artist’s revolt against the end of ideology and the general failures of social theory, obsessed with ‘ends’, with visions of finished worlds and finalities. Modern society was once based on a principle of expansion, but having reached a certain ‘critical mass’ it has begun to recoil. Is this why Jaisini creates his secluded line composition? What we are witnessing in the domain of the social is a kind of inverse explosion. The artist avoids breaking the line because any attempt to save the principle of expansion is not ‘archaic’ and regressive. The principle of enclosure is the radical inquiry for continuance. Jaisini has found his way to avoid the end-state. His closed circle of composition creates a new visual code that guarantees the ‘addressee,’ a recognizable meaning. The Talk Show mockery reflects the contemporary condition of Byzantizm. It could be mentioned here that evenin Cicero’s time, the ancient world was becoming stupid. Talk Show may symbolize the mass communication as an enclosing circle connecting mass culture and its audiences of ‘mass conformist,’ the picture’s title can be attributed to the fact that consequently television, along with the rest of mass culture, has become an undreamed-of medium of psychological control. We become part of mass communication circuits, part of a realm and era of connection, contact, feedback, an era that is ‘obscene,’ yet lunar cold. The reason why the artist prescribes the emerald color to his painting may be to symbolize the coldness of the contemporary world of communications which contacts penetrate without resistance. In the picture, we see the dogs’ intercourse as the critique of the talk show. Copyright © 2014 Yustas Kotz-Gottlieb All Rights Reserved

Kama Sutra

The Kama Sutra (Sanskrit: कामसूत्र About this sound pronunciation (help·info), Kāmasūtra) is an ancient Indian text widely considered to be the standard work on human sexual behavior in Sanskrit literature written by Vātsyāyana. A portion of the work consists of practical advice on sexual intercourse.

It is largely in prose, with many inserted anustubh poetry verses. "Kāma" which is one of the four goals of Hindu life, means sensual or sexual pleasure, and "sūtra" literally means a thread or line that holds things together, and more metaphorically refers to an aphorism (or line, rule, formula), or a collection of such aphorisms in the form of a manual. Contrary to popular perception, especially in the western world, Kama sutra is not just an exclusive sex manual; it presents itself as a guide to a virtuous and gracious living that discusses the nature of love, family life and other aspects pertaining to pleasure oriented faculties of human life.

The Kama Sutra is the oldest and most notable of a group of texts known generically as Kama Shastra (Sanskrit: Kāma Śāstra). Traditionally, the first transmission of Kama Shastra or "Discipline of Kama" is attributed to Nandi the sacred bull, Shiva's doorkeeper, who was moved to sacred utterance by overhearing the lovemaking of the god and his wife Parvati and later recorded his utterances for the benefit of mankind.

Historians attribute Kamasutra to be composed between 400 BCE and 200 CE. John Keay says that the Kama Sutra is a compendium that was collected into its present form in the 2nd century CE.

Content

Vatsyayana's Kama Sutra has 1250 verses, distributed in 36 chapters, which are further organized into seven parts.

According to both the Burton and Doniger translations, the contents of the book are structured into seven parts like the following:

1. General remarks

five chapters on contents of the book, three aims and priorities of life, the acquisition of knowledge, conduct of the well-bred townsman, reflections on intermediaries who assist the lover in his enterprises.

2. Amorous advances/Sexual union

ten chapters on stimulation of desire, types of embraces, caressing and kisses, marking with nails, biting and marking with teeth, on copulation (positions), slapping by hand and corresponding moaning, virile behavior in women, superior coition and oral sex, preludes and conclusions to the game of love. It describes 64 types of sexual acts.

Artistic depiction of a sex position. Although Kama Sutra did not originally have illustrative images, part 2 of the work describes different sex positions.

3. Acquiring a wife

five chapters on forms of marriage, relaxing the girl, obtaining the girl, managing alone, union by marriage.

4. Duties and privileges of the wife

two chapters on conduct of the only wife and conduct of the chief wife and other wives.

5. Other men's wives

six chapters on behavior of woman and man, how to get acquainted, examination of sentiments, the task of go-between, the king's pleasures, behavior in the women's quarters.

6. About courtesans

six chapters on advice of the assistants on the choice of lovers, looking for a steady lover, ways of making money, renewing friendship with a former lover, occasional profits, profits and losses.

7. Occult practices

two chapters on improving physical attractions, arousing a weakened sexual power.

We ambled off to Shaffy's Tuin, a folksy, local garden where you can rent square-metre boxes for your own cultivating fun. The Garden gives color to a rather 'industrial' site of railroads and shipping. Many of the boxes are filled to overflowing with flowers and vegetables; obviously they attract lots of insects.

Here's a photo of an Artichoke Flower being visited by 'Bottoms-Up' Bumblebees and a Honeybee, all avid for its nectar.

The other day I had Artichoke at dinner and looked up what one of my botanical heroes, Abraham Munting (1626-1683), one-time professor of botany at the then young university of Groningen, had to say about it. As is his wont, he gives a nicely full description of the kinds of Cynara he knows. His pieces always end with a list of the uses of the plant described. He writes matter-of-factly that eating Artichokes "vermeerder(t) het Zaad, en verwek(t) een grote begeerte tot het Echte werk" (increases Semen and generates great desire to the 'Real Work'). Earlier in the Middle Ages and also during Classical Times, Artichokes had been regarded as an aphrodisiac, and they were strictly forbidden to women. Munting is clearly modern and he makes no mention of any moral prohibitions against eating our plant. But he is a bit coy in his choice of words: "het Echte werk" ('Real work'), here means: sexual intercourse

In order correctly to define art, it is necessary, first of all, to cease to consider it as a means to pleasure and to consider it as one of the conditions of human life. Viewing it in this way we cannot fail to observe that art is one of the means of intercourse between man and man.

Part two in the series I’ll be posting while I was Amish Town U.S.A. This shot was taken from the road side in a car. Before entering the town we stopped in Lancaster center to get a map of Intercourse. We were warned to not be too blatant when taking pictures of the Amish.

So here we are two guys with cameras sitting on the roadside trying to get some good snaps of Amish people. I swear it felt like me were spying on them. We had the whole set up as well, one would be reading a map and the other quickly taking photos. I suppose it probably would have been better to just take the darn picture and move on instead of trying to be all slick about it.

The moment we thought about that and drove off from this scene, a man from out of nowhere (who wasn’t Amish) in a pickup truck stopped us. With a stern look, he asked “You guys aren’t out here taking pictures of Amish people are you, because they don’t like that!” What else could we say right? I mean we were sitting there with camera bags and a map inside this car. The man drove off when we told him we were just after landscape photography, but we could clearly see that he was upset about it. I guess that the community was a tight one and that they have had their fill of tourist (which brings in a large amount of the money here in Intercourse).

Anyhow, to make a long story short, be careful if you’re out in Intercourse when taking pictures of the Amish. What’s funny about the whole thing is that during the whole day that we were there, this was the only time anyone approached us about taking pictures of anything and he wasn’t even Amish?
