Intercourse (population: 1,274 as of 2010 census) is an unincorporated village and census-designated place in Leacock Township, Lancaster County in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, 10 miles (16 km) east of Lancaster on Pennsylvania Route 340. As with the nearby towns of Bird-in-Hand, Blue Ball, and Paradise, Intercourse is a popular site for tourists because of its location in "Amish country" and its sexually suggestive name. The movie Witness was filmed in Intercourse as well as other parts of the surrounding area, and For Richer or Poorer was set there, though not filmed in Intercourse. Because of the town's unusual name, the sign posts for the town are frequently targeted by thieves.
Tourism and farming are major industries in the area. Small businesses sell Amish crafts, food, and give horse and buggy rides. The town thrives on thousands of tourists who visit the region each year. Most of the land surrounding the town is farmland.
Intercourse was founded in 1754. The community was originally named Cross Keys, after a local tavern. Intercourse became the name in 1814. The word "intercourse" was commonly used to describe the "fellowship" and "social interaction and support" shared in the community of faith, which was much a part of a rural village like this one.

..... I often think of your little couple, and imagine what they are like, and fancy the curious mixture there must be in them. I see them standing in the doorway, looking at me with irresolute eyes, and I sit quite still, that they may not go away perhaps the only intercourse that will be permitted me with them on earth. It would be a curious speculation (if one's acquaintance were but large enough to enable one to collect a sufficient number of facts to form a sort of experience) to find out what materials in the parents' characters kneaded together into what sort of pate' in the children's- and the general laws of these admixtures. I wonder in this diving and grubbing age, that people don't make at least rough theories about it, (there must be some laws, if we could but find them out)- beginning with Genesis, where we see that the "sons of God", which, I suppose, only means the men great in wisdom and virtue and piety, who led those antediluvian females to the Hymeneal altar, who, I am afraid, were Pagans or at least something very bad, by their being called the "daughters of men", we see that their offspring, poor things were strong and violent and restive and whatever else we may suppose symbolized under the character of "giants". N. B. This, upon second thoughts looks like an uncivil apologue, and, as I remember poor Mrs. Fowler got into a scrape by sealing a letter once with a wafer, on which were two donkeys with the motto "When shall we three meet again?" of course implying that the receiver of the letter was the third donkey, (though preserve me from putting you into the same category of souls as Mrs. Fowler's correspondent ) yet I must beg to assure that the above is no parable.

Biographical note: Julia Ward Howe (1819-1910) was an author, lecturer, poet, activist, abolitionist and leader in the Women's suffrage movement. Born in New York City to affluent parents, Ward Howe was well educated but expected to be a wife. In 1843 Ward Howe married Samuel Gridley Howe the founding director of Perkins after meeting him at a tour of the school. Despite conventional expectations that she not live a public life she initially published work anonymously before becoming a social activist that wrote, spoke, and worked for many social causes. She is commonly known for writing the words to “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and in 1908, she became the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts. In 1988 she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame.
