Last week, our latest intercom & video router innovations were presented at Mediatech Africa 2019 in Johannesburg. At the Riedel stand, we demonstrated how easy it is for our users to process SMPTE 2110 video and audio streams with our MediorNet IP App.
After the power plant and the cooling tower, here come pictures of the offices, including the baths, cafeteria as well as workshops. And, a little farther, a former Intercom coal distributor (big metallic structure).

On Monday I had a monster day, and I knew I was going to struggle to get some quality photos so I snapped a quick photo in Lambeth North tube stop of the Emergency Intercom. For those of you that are keeping up with my 365 project it's a little strange that I've taken 3 photos of the last 6 or so of Elevators. Strange indeed, there's no rationale for it on my side.
I had a busy day, went to Reading to meet with one of our business partners, had a great lunch meeting and learned a lot about their business and some of the challenges they face, something that I always find interesting and that really drives me to learn more about business and my industry in particular.

Part of 1999 project to document the various library departments for Alden Library's 30th anniversary. Each department had a group photo and description in the library newsletter.

PCirc
Patron Initiated Circulation (PCirc) is one of the youngest services at Alden Library. PCirc was established May 1, 1995 through Ohio Link. The department was created specifically for Ohio Link borrowing, unlike other libraries where it is integrated with traditional services. PCirc processes all requests from start to finish. When PCirc first began functioning there was concern that there would be a lot of down time when school was not in session. This has not proven to be the case! The first week of operation PCirc lent more books than any other Ohio school during that time and they continue to lend while OU is on breaks.
Anita Grant and George Cheripko recall that when they first established PCirc, the area was one room with a table and an Alice terminal. The room was previously used by IMTS for storage. Approximately one year later in March a second room was added, which has been turned into office space for George and Jeremy Blazier. In the beginning it was just Anita, George and two student assistants with some assistance from OVAL assistant Melissa Algeo. This was extremely difficult considering that both George and Anita still had their other positions for the library. Craig Mehr was hired full time in June, one month after PCirc opened, and by December, George was working full time as the unit supervisor. In April 1996 Jeremy Blaizer started working in the department as a student assistant until October 1998, when he was hired full time.
PCirc's focus has simply been accessing the necessary technology to meet the departments needs. The future of patron initiated circulation is headed towards allowing users to request complete magazine and journal articles online. OhioLink would like patrons to be able to look at all of its holdings and allow patrons to get full text material through Ohio Link. There are many costs involved with this process and many issues to be resolved. The department would also like pickup locations to be available throughout Ohio for easier access to material. Ideally PCirc would have no boundaries for patron initiated requests, and, considering the success the department has enjoyed to date, the future holds great promise.

Base of the 1929 cast-iron fire alarm box I purchased in June, 2015 which came from New York City.
The post weighs 809# and is being restored to working condition.
This post had the 1970s era electronic police/fire intercom installed in it as most had in the city, the spade handle door shown in some photos is a replacement door to return the artifact back to it's original early function.
The post lacks the internal spring-wound telegraph mechanism but this will be obtained and installed.
Also missing is the spring-wound door bell ringer mechanism, but the bell is intact, this too can be found and restored back to working condition.
If this post had retained it's original paint in reasonably good condition it would be a candidate for simply cleaning and restoration to working order, unfortunately, this post had been slathered with black paint on the bottom half, and is so caked with paint the exquisite details are obliterated, including the "Property of the City of New York in raised letters on the base, therefore I decided to remove the paint back to bare metal and repaint it appropriately, and with the same method that was normally used by the city crews- oil paint applied by brush. This will not be sandblasted as sandblasting etches and damages metal surfaces.
The post would have had a keyless cast iron door in 1929, these were replaced some time in the 30s with the type of spade handle door shown, most if not all of these were cast in aluminum, mine, as some other parts in other boxes I own has the brand name "TENUAL" on it. Best as I could find in researching the name, is that it is a brand name associated with aluminum automobile engine parts made in the 1930s by the "National Bronze and Aluminum Foundry Co. once located in Cleveland, Ohio. Photos of vintage engine parts for sale have been found with the name "TENUAL" in raised letters on these castings, thus, it is entirely likely this foundry cast a number of the updated doors in this style in this period.
Many of the doors were updated again, or updated if they weren't the first time- with a guarded spade handle style door, I do not believe any of these have the "TENUAL" name on them so another foundry was likely used for that series.

it's especially reassuring to be in a subway station with no attendant, and then run across one of these little boxes tucked inside the flange of a beam.
so if you're assaulted on the platform, all you have to do is search around for the hidden callbox, and then hope it's actually operational, and then ask your attacker to wait while you explain the situation over what i'm sure is a crystal-clear intercom.
