These three clips give a glimpse of some attractions at the John Ball Zoo on this "flamingo Friday" an hour after opening time of 9 a.m. First is the line waiting for admission by paper ticket or by phone receipt. In the distance one of the dinosaurs is growling and moving its head. Next comes a view of the 20 or so resident flamingos and the people admiring them. Finally, there is a scene from the petting farm where visitors can approach some of animals to touch them.
Much better than an interactive Web site or phone app, the in-person experience is filled with analog wonders and signage: panels with context about habitat and species conditions in general or specific details of the animal residing at the zoo. Curiosity may be sparked, comparisons may come to mind, and memories are made in which personal experience is paired with learning event, thus making the subject matter concrete, real, and individual rather than a dull page of textbook information or a series of clicks and swipes on a small screen.
