For the doubters among my followers...yep, I got the yip.
When I posted the Red-tailed Hawk yesterday, I mentioned that it flew across the prairie dog town while I was attempting to photograph a jump yip. Actually, I had already managed to get that shot about ten minutes before the hawk entered the scene.
During each trip to Black-tailed Prairie dog country, I've been rather intensively observing the little rascals with the intent of increasing my odds of capturing the jump yip. The payoff was that I captured nine of them during our latest trip.
Some info on jump yip behavior:
Black-tailed Prairie Dogs have a vast "vocabulary". Some scientists consider their vocalizations to be a language. They can communicate the type of predator/threat, the size, the color and whether it's on the ground or airborne.
One of their communications is called a "jump-yip" where one will stand up, seemingly without reason, on its haunches, lean back its head and call out "wee-oo." One of the main theories for this behavior has been that it's a signal of "all clear". But research has shown that they perform the jump-yip before, during and after dangerous events. Some researchers now conclude the whole point of jump-yipping is for one prairie dog to assess the alertness and responsiveness of his or her associates.

Intensive living
If you stand in one of the typical courtyards of Hong Kong, you can see how intense it is to live together in such a small space. The Chinese special administrative region Hong Kong is roughly the size of Stuttgart and Berlin put together. However, around 7.5 million residents crowd into it.

Compositionally Challenged Week 27 - Storytelling
Shot while visiting a family member. The story started with a fantastic Alaskan cruise but then turned serious on the last day. He had to be hospitalized in British Columbia for 11 days and then was flown back to Colorado via air ambulance yesterday. His wife had to drive their vehicle home by herself, arriving just tonight. We've all been on edge and will be for a while.
I'll be popping in and out but I might not get around to commenting much, my apologies! : )

Lucanus cervus is widespread across most of Europe extending through the Caucasus and Asia Minor to parts of Russia and Central Asia. However, because of modern forestry practices, it is in serious decline and considered as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List. In some countries it is a protected species. The larvae develop in decaying wood on or below the surface and because of intensive forestry management this kind of material is becoming less available. The larvae take four to five years to develop and so the availablity of a good supply of rotting wood is essential.
This beetle is undoubtedly one of the more spectacular looking beetles. The male's fearsome-looking antler-like mandibles are used in courtship displays and wrestling with other males. However, the mandibles cannot be closed with any significant force and are therefore not dangerous to humans. They are brave though and will stand their ground, making them perfect photographic subjects. The female on the other hand can inflict a painful bite. The species is sexually dimorphic, the female being much smaller than the male and lacking the huge mandibles. The male can reach a body length of 80mm or more while the female only 48mm. The female has black elytra in contrast to the red of the male.
The pupae live in the soil for around three months and the adults emerge in June and July, sometimes extending into early August. The adults only live for a few weeks feeding on fruit and tree sap, searching for a mate with which to breed. They usually fly around late evening/dusk but can sometimes be seen during the daytime.
