NATO’s largest Cyber Security Conference, NIAS (NATO Information Assurance Symposium), organized by the NCI Agency, took place in Mons, Belgium on 15-17 October.
This 15th edition of the annual symposium, will focus on: ‘Digital transformation: smart machines for smarter decisions’.
As smart machines proliferate, NATO must be prepared to tap into the potential of these technologies so that Allied leaders can make the right decisions at the right time to protect our infrastructures, troops and populations.
Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Big Data are just some of the innovations, which could both threaten NATO missions or support them.
The three-day event offers a unique opportunity for NATO and national leaders, as well as cyber security specialists from across the Alliance, industry and academia to discuss best practices, exchange views and explore innovative cyber security solutions.
This annual symposium also serves as a platform for frontline IT staff and product developers to exhibit their innovations and share their knowledge of these cutting-edge technologies, which could benefit the Alliance.

An advertisement from the Intelligencer. Mackenzie Bowell was taken in as a printing apprentice in December 1834, with some experts assuming that his employment was a result of this ad.
The drawing from Marzluff and Angell's 2012 book here shows Betty, a Caledonian crow, bending a hook in a piece of wire, to get from down in a tube a tiny basket of food. I find this astonishing and a little bit spooky – shades of Hitchcock's 1963 movie, "The Birds". Real birds, if they are smart as crows, can dominate by much smarter moves than simply mobbing, although they are also masters of such gang attacks.
I was told by a lady who read this book and knows from her experience years ago that crows are extremely demanding pets, causing unceasing mayhem. She told me their crow could not be stopped from pulling the clothes pins off a neighbor's line. The neighbor solved her problem of wet clothes on the ground by killing the crow.

It must be wonderful to travel through the air in such a casual way as this goldfinch. Not even thinking what it's doing.
I notice that all the many birds around the feeders fly through the trees and around each other effortlessly. They never collide or run into the tree limbs. I never see them picking themselves up and dusting themselves off. They never have to stop and tend to the injured.
Clearly they must be a superior intelligence to us.
We can hardly get through Kroger without running our shopping carts into each other. Imagine what it would be like for us at bird speeds! And if the carts got off the ground! What a catastrophe. Clearly birds are smarter than we are.
But, we can look at the few splashes of color on this photo and conjure up images of a sky and a limb with lichen on it and a goldfinch midair. I wonder if the goldfinch can do that.

With early vaccination and outstanding data, country is the world’s real-life COVID-19 lab.
Israel has among the world’s highest levels of vaccination for COVID-19, with 78% of those 12 and older fully vaccinated, the vast majority with the Pfizer vaccine. Yet the country is now logging one of the world’s highest infection rates, with nearly 650 new cases daily per million people. More than half are in fully vaccinated people, underscoring the extraordinary transmissibility of the Delta variant and stoking concerns that the benefits of vaccination ebb over time.

Israel’s sobering setback
Israel, which has led the world in launching vaccinations and in data gathering, is confronting a surge of COVID-19 cases that officials expect to push hospitals to the brink. Nearly 60% of gravely ill patients are fully vaccinated.

What is clear is that “breakthrough” cases are not the rare events the term implies. As of 15 August, 514 Israelis were hospitalized with severe or critical COVID-19, a 31% increase from just 4 days earlier. Of the 514, 59% were fully vaccinated. Of the vaccinated, 87% were 60 or older. “There are so many breakthrough infections that they dominate and most of the hospitalized patients are actually vaccinated,” says Uri Shalit, a bioinformatician at the Israel Institute of Technology (Technion) who has consulted on COVID-19 for the government. “One of the big stories from Israel [is]: ‘Vaccines work, but not well enough.’”
