At the Crossroads of Economic Development, Transition and Integration: ‘Slovenia - The Right Mix of Qualities’
The Republic of Slovenia is at the crossroads of European corridors and is an advanced transition country which is closest to the Western Balkans. Although Slovenia was the first among transition countries to adopt the euro on January 1st 2007, the country was badly hit by the financial crisis. But it took bold measures and fiscal resources to overcome the problems. Lately, Slovenia has enjoyed a high level of growth and is further integrating its economy into European and global value chains.
Slovenia’s position is due to the right mix of qualities, its so-called ‘4Qs4U’: that means that the country has quality links to regional markets, a quality workforce, quality infrastructure and high quality of life. Find out more: www.InvestSlovenia.org. The EBRD has been instrumental in the Slovenian transition. The recently adopted EBRD Country Strategy for Slovenia confirms the Bank’s continuous support to private sector development projects, as well as related infrastructure and other investments. The Country Strategy aims to further strengthen Slovenia’s competitiveness, internationalisation and green economy transition, and so further enhance the 4Qs4U.Find out more about the EBRD in Slovenia: www.ebrd.com/where-we-are/slovenia/overview.html.
This panel was made up of high-level representatives of Slovenian authorities and the EBRD regional team telling the story of Slovenia’s economic transition: how the country built its qualities and how it preserves them.
The event also gave the audience an opportunity to learn about Slovenia’s conducive economic environment for domestic and foreign investors, and to identify future investment opportunities and priorities in the country. Above all, it provided an example of how the hurdles associated with Connecting Economies for Stronger Growth can be managed and how the EBRD can help.

Dieter Vandoren and Mariska de Groot present a special collaboration wherein they integrate their respective expertises in embodied performance and analog machinery. De Groot and Vandoren will perform 'Shadow Puppet?' as part of the Sphaerae program.'Shadow Puppet?' presents an interplay of embodied performance and analog machinery that gives rise to an engulfing play of light, shadow and raw optical sound. Two performers - one behind the machines and one in the spotlights - play this light-to-sound instrument in a dynamic tension of attraction and repulsion. It's never quite clear who is conducting who. Dieter Vandoren develops and performs audiovisual instruments with a strong focus on embodiment. He creates intricate interactions between the human body and the digital synthesis processes, taking cues from acoustic instrument performance. His works take on immersive architectural scales as to engender equally strong embodied experiences in the audience as in himself, the performer. Intrigued by the phenomena and history of optical sound, Mariska de Groot makes and performs comprehensive analog instruments and installations which immerse audiences in room-scale light-to-sound apparatuses. The constructivist projections and subtle, raw sounds excite abstract cinematic experiences.
Every year at ICU, there is a school festival that takes place over the weekend. A group had asked a bunch of study abroad students to walk around the campus in a kimono for fun. I went and was dressed by 4-5 ladies, and had to wear towels around my waist since I was too curvy and it would distort the shape of the kimono. It was extremely uncomfortable but I looked pretty!

Jewellery and Metalsmithing
Inspiration sprouted from how nature reproduces, and these nuts/fruits are in a way a womb for seeds. Seeding plants are oviparous (when the embryo grows separately from the parent) and have a diverse range of sexualities.
The shell and seeds represent this ambiguous womb, the idea of fertility with no “gender normative roles.” Relating this to humans and society where our gender roles are expanding and separating from the gender binary and stereotypes, a question stemmed: How does our vast variety of identity fit in today’s culture of “gender norms”?
A lot of us have a desire or curiosity towards the womb and fertility, no matter the gender, and it should be comfortable for everyone to explore these feelings. Integrating Jewellery and its long relationship with the human body allows exploration with this connection to nature and representation of an ambiguous womb offering an experience for everyone to connect their nurturing side.
