Since starting itduring my 365 I've really wanted to continue shooting my Flowers/Mountain Top Saga (still not sure about name). The challenging thing is that there's only about a week every year in which the conditions are right for the photos with proper cloud cover and dead grass etc. Unfortunately I was out of town this year when the conditions were right, but I have about 4-5 I managed to take in 2012 that I'll start releasing.

You can view the rest of the series with the proper edits on by website here. (The edits here on Flickr are all old from a laptop with a very discolored monitor and are not very cohesive haha)

Also I just realized that I really haven't uploaded any of these since the new Flickr because the black bars really are useless now.

No importa que la flecha no alcance el blanco

Mejor así

No capturar ninguna presa

No hacerle daño a nadie

pues lo importante

es el vuelo la trayectoria el impulso

el tramo de aire recorrido en su ascenso

Third installment of my series 'illustrating' Jorge de Montemayor's "Los Siete Libros de la Diana," a 16th century Spanish pastoral romance.

This scene is part of a flash back to before Sireno's exile when he and Diana (portrayed by Anna Peters) were still in love.

Though Diana is the titular character of the romance, it is very interesting to note that she is absent from most of the narrative. Everything we learn about her is from second hand accounts. For this reason I chose to make her face only visible in the mirror which Sireno holds for her, as well as to give a nod to Velázquez's "Las Meninas" and Van Eych's "Arnolfini Portrait"

Yep that's right, the flowers/mountain top saga is still going. I figured it's about time I got this out into the world. I think I may still even have two or three more that were intended to be for the story on a hard drive somewhere, but who knows if they'll ever see the light of day. I'm kind of dragging it on too long already as it is.

Part 6 of 10 of a photo story shot April 2013.

Inspired by of the ideas put forth in Edgar Allen Poe's "The Philosophy of Composition" and based on a couple of photos from back in my 365.

"the death, then, of a beautiful woman is, unquestionably, the most poetical topic in the world---and equally is it beyond doubt that the lips best suited for such topic are those of a bereaved lover."

After 4 years, Mattel is introducing a Look line with articulated dolls, it includes a doll that resembles the new Playline Barbie head.

This presents an... interesting quandary.

From my vantage point, the upcoming Look dolls are reflective of the @BarbieStyle Intagram account.

It is the place where Playline Barbies meet Collector quality clothes and accessories. It makes sense in this special world because Playline is the public face of Barbie, not Collector. Most of the Barbie's sold will be Playline. The tongue-in-cheek 'real life' approach to the Instagram account and the public stage it presents requires they rely on the quality clothes items in their archives: their Barbie Collector archives.

Right away, the most impressive things to me about this account was the beautiful modern fashions. It is the kind of clothes I wished Mattel would sell their dolls in. Fine, so not Playline. What about Barbie Collector? Clearly they are capable of it!

Enter these new Look dolls.

Giving us those @BarbieStyle level quality clothes on Barbie Collector articulated bodies. With an exclusively Barbie Collector sculpt!

So the blonde uses what looks like a shrunken Playline Barbie head.... I'm not particularly happy about it.

There are non-playline, smiling sculpts they could use. This may well be the Generation Girl Barbie sculpt. I'm hoping it is. If it is, then what a great substitute for the Playline sculpt! Giving us that @BarbieStyle feeling without actually being the same sculpt.

It is clear, to me at least, that with this collection, they want to tell collectors that they are listening and are capable of responding to what we are asking for. Something many of us have questioned in the past.

If it is the Playline sculpt... that upsets me. I am one of those people who think there should be a line between Playline and Collector.

However... @BarbieStyle blurs those lines in a way that is fresh and exciting. If we are going to get more dolls that reflect the quality of clothes construction presented on @BarbieStlyle, I'm not going to let a smiley Barbie head spoil my joy & excitement for such a thing.

We visited the much 'grammed tree on Mount Davidison to see what the hype was about. Even in the fog, this dead tree on the side of the hill was pretty spectacular.

It's been too long since I've posted anything.

In my on-going exploration into story telling I decided this summer to investigate the genre of the Spanish Pastoral Romance, something I've been interested in since I shot this (yes that's the same staff). So I decided to read Jorge de Montemayor's "Los Siete Libros de la Diana" a 16th century spanish text (hooray for my degree coming in use!). I found that the storytelling was far more complex than I'd be able to replicate through photos so I decided to try illustrating some scenes from "La Diana."

This is the first scene where one of the central characters, the shepherd Sireno, returns to his homeland after having been banished from the kingdom for a year, and thus separated from his lover Diana.

I only managed to shoot a few of the scenes I wanted to while I was on my road trip around Oregon and Washington, but I hope to continue it next year. This one was at the Oregon Flickr Gathering hosted by Brendon Burton. This probably isn't the final edit or crop since I have to wait to finish the series to be sure, but I'm happy with it for now =)

Also just an fyi that I have posted a couple tutorials on how to shoot expansions on my YouTube vlog

Second installment of my series 'illustrating' Jorge de Montemayor's "Los Siete Libros de la Diana," a 16th century Spanish pastoral romance.

After returning from his year long exile, Sireno rests and reflects on a love letter and lock of hair (Thanks Rachel [yes it's a bit weird and creepy but that sort of thing was romantic in the 16th century I suppose]) from his beloved Diana, who, in his year of absence, has married another.
