Amsterdam.

In 1900, the city council decided to set up an electricity company for 'lighting and moving force', a year later, the construction of the 'Central Station' was started at Hoogte Kadijk in Amsterdam.

In particular, the desire was to electrify the (horse) tram and (steam) cranes of the Eastern Port area.

Extension.

Soon the demand for electricity was found to be much larger than expected in 1903. Therefore, the central station was expanded in 1908 and the machine hall at the height of Kadijk was doubled in the western direction and reached its present dimensions. The total floor area was almost doubled, making it the largest warehouse complex in Europe at that time. The difference between the old and the new part is hardly visible. Both parts have a sober brick architecture with characteristic large arch windows.

Until 1931 the power station was fully powered for power generation. From 1946 the power generation was transferred to other locations and the machines were removed from the building.

The interior is partly in tact and it is a pleasure for anyone who loves industrial design to walk around and especially to photograph.
