The Avison Ensemble continued its collaborations with young musicians in the North East region by presenting a Saturday afternoon Family Concert in the heart of Newcastle’s town centre in early October 2011. Performing at the Brunswick Methodist Chapel the Ensemble was joined by the Strings of the Gateshead Youth Orchestra and the Gateshead Viol Consort who performed lively works from the English Baroque period. The Avison Ensemble performed Vivaldi's Four Seasons on period instruments to coincide with the release of their new recording on Linn Records of Vivaldi's 12 Violin Concertos Opus 8.
The Avison Ensemble is the outstanding period instrument orchestra based in Newcastle upon Tyne, which plays and popularises the music of Charles Avison (1709-1770) and other English classical composers of the Baroque period, such as Garth, Arne and Herschel. The Ensemble also performs Purcell, Handel, Vivaldi, Corelli, Geminiani, Pergolesi, Teleman, Rameau, Bach, Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven.

The Gateshead Youth Orchestra performs a very wide repertoire and aims to give young musicians the opportunity to perform a wide range of music from a variety of periods and styles. The Gateshead Viol Consort plays music written between 1550 and 1700.

This old man was a part of a larger group playing traditional chinese instruments. The music was sort of haunting in the evening chill of SF. The old man seemed so focussed desipte all the tourists jostling around him..
I was on a roll today. This is Steve Chavez. We met this afternnon at a bbq. He plays the marimba, an instrument I'd heard of but had never heard it! The marimba is a type of xylophone, and has a beautiful melodic sound. Steve started playing the drums at 18. Shortly after this he heard someone playing the marimba and he decided he wanted one! So he mentioned it to his brother who said lets go to Chiapas (In Mexico) and get you one! So they jumped into the truck headed off to Mexico found his first marimba. After that there was no looking back! He now owns 38! Steve had no problem with me taking his picture for my strangers project, infact very happy to help!

Instructions on how to play Storefront as a musical instrument
Start your performance at home.
1. When on the sidewalk walking to Storefront let loose. Listen.
2. Drag your feet through the sidewalk's surfaces, feel the rhythm of the pavement’s joints. Listen.
3. Walk in a constant speed, feel the change in the materials'density. Listen.
4. Stop, jump. Listen.
5. Walk on your toes and your heels; feel the softness. Listen.
6. Knock on all facades, stone, metal, glass, plastic and ceramic surfaces; feel the depth and hollowness of this city. Listen.
7. Try to move anything that might move; feel the weight. Listen.
8. Touch, pull, scratch, hit (lovingly) anything that might sound. Listen.
9. Go to Kenmare Street, number 97, caress the façade. Listen.
10. Turn the panels while entering Storefront. Listen.
11. See the strings all over the space; don’t touch anything. Listen.
12. Play the Storefront with your hands, body, teeth and feet as you crawl, pluck, lick or tick the strings. Listen.
13. Play it again, think of the music, Storefront is recording your performance, synthesizing it, streaming it. Listen.
14. Leave. Perform. Listen.

Guzheng--a traditional Chinese instrument. Some of the guzheng in the store were covered with deep relief wood carvings--works of art. The guzheng is a type of zither and is plucked. The bridges are movable. The first record about the guzheng is from over 2000 years ago.

We had never seen the instrument on the right before.. But then we got home, watched an episode of "Boardwalk Empire" and saw it again.
