The Eunuch Flute consists of a wooden tube widening out slightly to form a bell. The upper end of the tube is closed by means of a very fine membrane, often an onion skin stretched across the aperture. There is a mouthpiece im thr form of a hole near the membrane. Singing into the mouthpiece sets up vibrations in the membrane producing the sound. It has been popular in many countries including France during the 16th and 17th centuries.
This instrument was made in India in the late 19th or early 20th century.The bell-like end is open, while the other end is closed by an onion-skin membrane protected by a removable cap.
Eunuch Flutes are assigned the number 242 in the Hornbostel-Sachs classification of musical instruments ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hornbostel-Sachs ), indicating:
2 = Membranophones. Instruments where the sound is primarily produced by the vibration of a string or strings that are stretched between fixed points.
24 = Instruments which do not produce sound of their own, but modify other sounds by way of a vibrating membrane.
242 = Tube or vessel-kazoos. Instruments in which the membrane is placed in a box, tube or other container.

Everything lights up nicely when you flip the side lights switch. I've wired this to be always on as most production cars allow the side lights on even after the key is removed. Not sure if this is required for IVA but figured it was the safer bet. Having the instruments lit up is a good reminder that you've left your lights on too.

A collection of some very cute mini instruments that I really wanted to buy but no one seemed to be running this particular booth on this particular day, so, oh well.
The Markneukirchen Musical Instrument Museum has been situated since 1942 in the Paulus-Schlössel, a townsman’s home of the late baroque period, built in 1784. With over 3100 musical instruments from all over the world, the Museum houses resources unequaled on its scale, of interest to both amateurs and specialists. The many forms of the musical instruments, the richness of ideas, and the craftsmanship of the instrument makers fascinate the beholder. The museum was founded in 1883 through a trade society at the initiative of the teacher and organist Paul Apian-Bennewitz, who was anxious to create an educational establishment for musical instrument makers. There are numerous instruments which document the development of instrument making in the region of Vogtland as well as all over the world. Some interesting curiosities illustrate the bountiful skills of the instrument makers. Thus, one can see a tuba with a1.02 m daiameter bell an overall length of 4.65 m. www.museum-markneukirchen.de
