The city observatory was commissioned by the Astronomical Institution (founded in 1812). They wanted to build an observatory which could be used for scientific research, form a basis for the establishment of an accurate public time service for Edinburgh and Leith, and create a 'people's observatory' where members of the institution could go to conduct their own experiments and research.

Unfortunately, the old cemetery from the former Dixon State School is not being maintained again. About 10 years back, the lack of care and maintenance was brought to the city and the problem was corrected...temporarily it seems. Now these unfortunate souls are being disrespected again...

Dixon State School was a state run mental institution. It was told mentally and physically challenged people were routinely dropped off there. It had a popular nursing school for many years. It closed in the late '70s,early '80s as private care and more focused rehab facilities became the go to. It is said this sad cemetery contains as many as 1000 unmarked graves....

The Smithsonian Institution Building, located near the National Mall in Washington, D.C. behind the National Museum of African Art and the Sackler Gallery, houses the Smithsonian Institution's administrative offices and information center. The building is constructed of Seneca red sandstone in the faux Norman style (a 12th-century combination of late Romanesque and early Gothic motifs; built in the Gothic and Romanesque revival styles) and is nicknamed The Castle. It was completed in 1855 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965

The Castle was the first Smithsonian building, designed by architect James Renwick, Jr., whose other works include St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City and the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery, also in Washington D.C. The building committee held a nationwide design competition in 1846 and selected Renwick's design by a unanimous vote. A cardboard model of Renwick's winning design survives and is on display in the Castle. Renwick was assisted by Robert Mills, particularly in the internal arrangement of the building

San Quentin State Prison is California’s oldest and best known correctional institution, which was established on the site currently known as Point San Quentin, in July of 1852, as an answer to the rampant lawlessness in California at the time.

San Quentin State Prison is an all-male, minimum to maximum-security facility located north of San Francisco, and it was designed to hold up to 3,082 inmates.

This drone photo, taken as a long-exposure shot over 10 years ago, holds a very special meaning for me. It evokes memories and tells stories—not only about Karlsruhe but also about my personal journey as a photographer. With the advancements in image processing over the past decade, I felt it was time to give this photo a fresh and modern look without losing its original magic.

The photo showcases Karlsruhe in all its glory: the majestic palace at its center, perfectly embodying the city’s history and its fan-shaped layout. It bridges the past and the present. Remarkably, this photo remains unique to this day—no one has created a comparable long-exposure drone shot of this iconic scene.

The creation of this image holds a symbolic significance for me. As a young boy, I learned in school about Karlsruhe’s history and its unique city design. Years later, almost unconsciously, I transformed that story into this photograph.

Beyond its aesthetic beauty, the photo also highlights significant landmarks of German democracy and science. On the right, nestled in greenery, you can see the Federal Constitutional Court (Bundesverfassungsgericht), Germany’s highest court and a pillar of its legal system. On the left is the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), one of Germany’s leading institutions for science and research. In the center stands the Regional Administrative Office (Regierungspräsidium), surrounded by numerous other government buildings.

This photo is not just a view of Karlsruhe; it is a tribute to the city’s history, architecture, and importance.

Driving and walking rovers competed to survey a shadowy analogue of the south polar lunar surface for useable resources during the inaugural ESA-ESRIC Space Resources Challenge. Some 13 teams from across Europe and Canada took part in last month’s field test, with the winners due to be announced shortly.

The Space Resources Challenge – supported by ESA and the European Space Resources Innovation Centre (ESRIC) in Luxembourg – is asking European (and Canadian) researchers and institutions to develop and demonstrate a system of one or more vehicles capable of prospecting resources on the Moon in the near future.

Massimo Sabbatini, overseeing the contest for ESA, comments: “ESA is analysing the results of the first field test of the Challenge and the competition is fierce. There was a wide range of participants and technological solutions to the problem of prospecting: notably different locomotion techniques – legged, wheeled, tracked, and so on – and approaches, such as single versus multiple vehicles and aerial vehicles. The jury is out!”

The emphasis of the contest is on prospecting: pinpointing promising resources within a difficult lunar environment then characterising them in as much detail as possible, such as through visual inspection or spectral analysis.

The lunar poles are a focus of interest for future exploration. They do not experience the crippling temperature extremes of the Moon’s two-week days and nights, and frozen water and other deposits are believed to be buried within permanently shadowed polar craters.

The Space Resources Challenge teams gathered at Valkenberg in the Netherlands had to contend with challenging illumination conditions and potential loss of signal events to locate resources, including mapping a small impact crater in the vicinity of the rover’s lander – all within a two and a half hour time limit.

The five winners will be awarded €375 000 in ESA contracts, with a larger prize pool on offer after a follow-on field test hosted by ESRIC next year.

The Grand Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso, located in Havana, Cuba, is a significant cultural institution named after the renowned Cuban prima ballerina Alicia Alonso. Originally constructed in the early 20th century, the theater was initially known as the Teatro Tacón. Designed by Belgian architect Paul Belau, it was inaugurated in 1915 and quickly gained fame for its opulent architecture and role as a premier venue for theatrical performances.

In 1961, the theater underwent a significant renovation and was renamed in honor of Alicia Alonso, one of the most celebrated figures in the history of ballet. Alonso was not only a world-renowned dancer but also a choreographer and director. Despite facing personal challenges, including vision impairment, she achieved international acclaim for her artistry and contributions to the world of dance.

The renaming of the theater to honor Alicia Alonso reflects her profound impact on Cuban culture and her role in elevating ballet to new heights both in Cuba and around the world. The Grand Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso continues to serve as a hub for performing arts, hosting ballet performances, opera, theater, and concerts, and preserving Alonso's legacy for future generations.

Malbork Castle, Zamek w Malborku

The Castle of the Teutonic Order in Malbork is a 13th-century Teutonic castle and fortress located near the town of Malbork, Poland. It is the largest castle in the world measured by land area and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wikipedia

It was originally constructed by the Teutonic Knights, a German Catholic religious order of crusaders, in a form of an Ordensburg fortress. The Order named it Marienburg in honour of Mary, mother of Jesus. In 1457, it since served as one of the several Polish royal residences and the seat of Polish offices and institutions to 1772. From then on the castle was under German rule for over 170 years until 1945.

The castle is a classic example of a medieval fortress and, on its completion in 1406, was the world's largest brick castle. UNESCO designated the "Castle of the Teutonic Order in Malbork" and the Malbork Castle Museum a World Heritage Site in December 1997. It is one of two World Heritage Sites in the region (north-central Poland), together with the "Medieval Town of Toruń", which was founded in 1231.

Malbork Castle is also one of Poland's official national Historic Monuments (Pomnik historii), as designated on 16 September 1994. Its listing is maintained by the National Heritage Board of Poland.

With the rise of Adolf Hitler to power in the early 1930s, the Nazis used the castle as a destination for annual pilgrimages of both the Hitler Youth and the League of German Girls. The Teutonic Castle at Marienburg served as a blueprint for the Order Castles of the Third Reich built under Hitler's reign. In 1945 during World War II combat in the area, more than half the castle was destroyed. At the conclusion of the war, the city of Malbork and the castle became again part of Poland. The castle has been mostly reconstructed, with restoration ongoing since 1962. A new restoration was completed in April 2016. Malbork Castle remains the largest brick complex in Europe.
