New York City's first green building - The Hearst Tower located in midtown, Manhattan.
Located at 300 West 57th Street, this building holds the distinction of being New York City's first "green" high rise.
At 597 feet tall, the majority of the building's structural steel contains recycled materials and its annual carbon dioxide reduction associated with the greatly decreased energy usage is estimated to be 869 tons. Its roof is built to collect rainwater which gives it the distinction of reducing the amount of rainwater deposited into the sewer system during rainfall by 25%.
The rain that is collected on the roof is stored in the building's basement which allows it to be utilized for the building's cooling system, to water the building's plants and for the fountain that runs in the building's lobby.
Additionally, light sensors in the building control the amount of light on every floor based on the amount of natural light available in the building at any given time.
