Teratodes monticollis, the Hooded grasshopper is a grasshopper native to India and Sri Lanka. It belongs to the family Acrididae and sub-family Teratodinae. The pronotum (dorsal exoskeletal plate of the prothorax) is extended into a large hood like structure with a Yellow edge, giving it the resemblence of a leaf. This helps in camouflaging it with its surroundings. They feed on tree leaves and are usually found on teak and sandalwood trees.

This is the male of the species. They were abundant in the season of monsoon, when this photo was taken. Particularly this one was infested with entomopathogenic fungi that look like powdery substances over its body.

hive just a couple of feet above ground on a branch in a dense thicket hidden by rocks away from prying predators.
Copulation of velvet ant lasts for several minutes. The male, in this group, is larger than the female. The male, during copulation, usually grasps the female at her neck region with the help of mandibles and fore legs. He grabs her firmly and keeps her close to his ventral side of the body. By this way, she is literally being lifted up from the ground and hangs in the air between his mandibles and fore legs. Such a fascinating and romantic mating ritual I have witnessed ever in the insect world!

The Asilidae are the robber fly family, also called assassin flies. They are powerfully built, bristly flies with a short, stout proboscis enclosing the sharp, sucking hypopharynx. Robber flies, often resemble wasps or bees more than they do flies. They certainly bear little resemblance to house flies.

Found this lovely caterpillar in the Western Ghats. For ID i got as close as Asota plana, but they have black heads. Any thoughts?
A wandering glider dragonfly (Pantala flavescens) was resting at night hanging from a branch. After few days of taking this shot, I noticed a tiny fly was sitting on the branch just near the claw of the dragonfly. It is amazing to visualize the claw from the fly's perspective! The whole thing would be gigantic from fly's point of view! And it is funny to think that the fly might not be aware of the fact that a giant is hanging just below it! Jokes apart, the real fact is not so funny! The fly is a biting midge (Forcipomyia sp., Ceratopogonidae) who sucks body fluid from live insects. But in this case, the actual scenario is difficult to explain because I did not observe the fly at that moment. I do not know whether the fly had been attached to the dragonfly from a long time or just opportunistically found the dragonfly while resting at night.
Besides, this midge genus is composed of some species who suck blood from vertebrates and some are considered as important pollinators of Cacao plants!

Apis Dorsata - Giant Honeybee
Apis dorsata is found in south and southeast Asia predominately. It’s an old specie that sits between apis cerana (asiatic honeybee) and apis mellifera (western honeybee) in age. We are talking 10 – 12 million years old. Dorsata is not a cavity dweller, they build a massive single comb 1 – 3 meters wide. Layers of bees cover the outside. The comb is usually built on tree limbs, cliffs and on buildings. Apis dorsata are migratory and will return to the same location year after year. How they are able to do this is still being studied.
Dorsata honey, comb and brood is commonly harvested in Cambodia, India and Nepal prior to the rainy season when they will leave looking for dryer pastures as they are not cavity dwellers like mellifera

The tamarind tree outside our building played host for a while to a thriving beehive of what I think were dwarf honey bees (apis florea). It seemed to be doing well as the winter passed. But today I found the hive had collpased. I was getting rather fond of them too as I would see a couple of them buzzing about under the pots in my terrace garden, which is up on the fifth floor and adjoins the canopy of the tamarind tree where they built their hive. The plates under the planters always have a bit of water in them left over from watering, so I assumed they were in need of water.
