“Not to be confused with Lemongrass, Citronella is a zesty herb from the same family that is most famous for its insect repelling abilities. It is most commonly used in essential oil form, although the leaves have also been used for their aromatic and medicinal properties.“

(Corymbia citriodora). The essential oil of the lemon-scented gum mainly consists of citronellal (80%). Unrefined oil from the lemon eucalyptus tree is used in perfumery, and a refined form of this oil is used in insect repellents, especially against mosquitoes. (Source: Wikipedia)

In the welcoming warmth of the Tropical Greenhouse of the Hortus I noticed these miniscule white flowers. They're of Petiveria alliacea, which hails from the tropical climes of the Americas. In Suriname - formerly a Dutch colony - it's called Bakruwiwiri, something like: plant used as a herb against jungle demons. There are several recipes to prepare such a brew in the highly informative book by Tinde van Andel and Sofie Ruysschaert, Medicinale en rituele planten van Suriname (2011).

Our plant - whch smells strongly of garlic - has many other uses among which as a mosquito repellent and apparently, too, as a medication that eliminates cancer cells from the blood.

I fell behind partially because I spent so much time sketching out and discarding disturbingly violent images for this prompt. I know too many people suffering with Lyme to feel playful about this subject. Spray up, be safe. Lyme bites.

A three wick 4 1/2 pound handmade natural palm wax pillar candle that is 5 inches in diameter and 7 1/2 inches tall. The candle is Lemongrass with Eucalyptus and a hint of Cedarwood scented using essential oils as the scenting medium. I use all natural premium essential oils at the maximum levels recommended by the palm wax distributor. The candle has a sweet lemon aroma that is easily inhaled due to the Eucalyptus component of the blend. The Cedarwood gives the fragrance a wonderful earthy finish. All three of these essential oils repel mosquitoes making this a great outdoor candle. Also Lemongrass and Eucalyptus essential oils are said to have uplifting, calming, and relaxing qualities. It should also be noted that this candle size is not by chance, but engineered around the United States Postal Service medium flat rate box. Two candles at a shipping weight of 10 1/2 pounds can get delivered using the Priority Mail 2-3 Day System to any location in the US for $10.20.

Who you gonna call? BUGBLASTERS!

If there’s something weird.

And it don’t look good.

I ain’t afraid of no bug…

“Become a worry-slapper. Treat frets like mosquitoes. Do you procrastinate when a bloodsucking bug lights on your skin? ‘I’ll take care of it in a moment’. Of course you don’t! You give the critter the slap it deserves. Be equally decisive with anxiety.” – Max Lucado.

This photograph was taken in Craters of the Moons NP/NM. I took this photo while on top of a blown out cinder cone. This plant community in this area is in a lithosere seral stage of plant succession. The plants have al adapted and grown up in a desert that is also covered in old lava flows. This particular plant species is a wild onion (Allium validum). The wild onion is edible and has herbal/medicinal properties useful for insect repellent.

These items are from one of my M2 Jungle First Aid Kits. All of these items were standard issue part of the M2 Kit. The iodine tincture, in a very small glass vile, was stored in a wooden tube and sealed with the wrapper. This one was already opened so I removed the glass tube for viewing. It is almost empty of contents.

Often, the wooden tubes are not present in these M2 Kits.

I have 3 or 4 bottles of the insect repellent and Halazone tablets.

A handmade natural palm wax pillar candle scented with the essential oil Lemongrass becomes the second member of the aromatherapy series offered at Candles by Donald. Lemongrass smells just like the name suggests with strong, crisp, clean aromatic characteristics. In aromatherapy, lemongrass oil is used to treat acne, relieve muscle pain, indigestion, headaches, stress and nervous exhaustion. The essential oil Lemongrass is also used to repel insects such as fleas, lice, ticks and mosquitoes as an added benefit. Even thou the essential oils have aromatherapy properties these products should in no way be construed as having medicinal or therapeutic value. If you have medical concerns Or questions please consult your physician. I add the essential oil Lemongrass at a level equal to 6% of the palm wax weight. This is the maximum amount of oil that can be added to this premium blend of natural palm wax based on recommendations from the manufacturer. Natural palm wax is the perfect wax for making pillar candles in my opinion. The surface although covered with a most intense crystal feather pattern is hard and smooth to the touch. The candle burns clean with no soot or smoke.

Artemisia Apsinthium, turns out to be one of the most precious plants in our garden. I don't care about the spirit they used to make in France. The most important fact about fluffy green fairy is that it makes a powerful insect repellent!

The trials at Marigat use both ultra-low-volume and thermal fog equipment and a variety of EPA-labeled pesticides and are the first of their kind in providing critical information to better target sand flies in hot, arid locations.

In the summer of 1982 my family purchased a can of Off! brand insect repellent. I was the only one to notice this, but it looked peculiar to me. The cap was white instead of orange, and it had a pasted-on paper label. I peeled away at the paper label. The paper was thick and glossy, and attached with some pretty strong adhesive, which I cleaned off with a furniture spray, revealing this completely different Tech 25 label.

I wrote to the SC Johnson Company in Racine, Wisconsin, which made both Off! and Tech 25, and they explained that Tech 25 was a test market product. When they ended the test they simply relabled the cans Off! since it had the same ingredients as the better-established product. They were also generous enough to send me a whole box of other SC Johnson products.

A natural palm wax pillar candle scented with an essential oil called Lemongrass. Lemongrass essential oil is derived from a tall perennial grass native to warm temperate and tropical regions of the Old World. The candle has a lemony citrus aroma with excellent cold and hot throw. Used in aromatherapy, Lemongrass essential oil properties may create a sense of emotional well-being. The lemony citrus-like scent is a great relaxing agent and can help to relieve stress, anxiety and even depression. The handmade natural palm wax pillar candle is 3 inches in diameter X 4 1/2 inches tall, and weighs approximately one pound. I have colored this palm wax candle a bright lemon yellow that develops a silvery hue at the ridges of the crystal patterns. The surface has a characteristic starburst pattern typical for this natural palm wax blend and very beautiful. The candles exterior looks much like a frosted up window on a winter day. Burning with little or no soot, natural palm wax is a fantastic material for making candles. I have sized the wick to create a thin wall around the flame as the candle burns. The flame shinning through the crystal loaded candle walls and the body of the candle will give off a very nice glow. Eventually the wall will erode to be consumed by the candle flame.

Pogostemon cablin is another extremely aromatic herb. The essential oil has a mysterious, unforgettable, earthy odor that has been abused as a perfume by too many people...which I will complain about more later on.

The insect-repellent leaves were used to pack expensive, luxurious textiles for shipping to Europe so the scent became an indicator of authentic merchandise. It lingered on scarves and shawls worn by wealthy European women so soon became an olfactive stamp of the elite. Eventually, fashion trends shifted and the scarves, shawls and fabrics became part of the wardrobes worn by prostitutes...

It has been used as a garment and body perfume and as an aphrodisiac. It has many medicinal qualities also, for skin problems and infections, but it's time to move on to my rant.....

Patchouli Wearers: Please spare the rest of us from this olfactory assault and dilute your perfume, it is often overwhelming and reminds many people of something sweet or ill mixed with turpentine. While most of us enjoy a brief whif, it has the tendency to be entirely too strong and the effect is ruined. We can smell you, sharp and malodorous, from a mile away. A scent should not enter a room before you do...and it should not linger after you are gone.

(Please forgive me for not producing the best photo....I hope you get the basic idea of what a patchouli plant looks like. Also, I am speaking only of the oil wearers that drench themselves...I understand not everyone does this. It goes for all strong perfumes)

Sassafras trees are native to Eastern North American. It is in the Laurel family and all parts are aromatic. The leaves were once crushed and rubbed on the skin as a mosquito repellent, the roots were made into a tea used to flavor Rootbeer. The root tea was consumed as a general health tonic and may have antiseptic qualities. It was also used to ward off various evils and nasty spirits. And if you ask the right person you will find that some still use the roots in mopwater and general cleaning washes just for this reason.

Since the 1970's, commercial use of Sassafras as a flavoring agent and medicine has been banned due to it's cancer causing and liver-damaging oil, Safrole, which is also a simple, organic compound of Brown Camphor oil.

Also, Safrole is used in the manufacture of illegal MDMA.

Today most Sassafras products contain a non-safrole oil.
