Part 1 or 3 : options of use.

 

- Too round to have been 'polissoirs' for polishing stones.

- Too large to have been basins for pounding grain.

- Too shallow to have been food stores.

 

Many basins have had time spent carving lip inputs and outputs, and it would be wrong to ignore the importance of 'flow' to this hill-top site. Despite this, flow is not systematic, and some basins are simple circular (lower right). The 'architectural basins' certainly show the ideas and hands of man (see image of the same name below). Some of the simpler basins may be original geological pits - artifacts of sandstone's geological past. My own feeling is that there was a fixed and long term cultural relation with basins of many forms and juxtapositions, and, whilst there may be some natural basins, most of these have been augmented by the hand of man or generated from raw monolith.

 

Flow can be associated with pressing grapes and other fruits, animal sacrifice, hygiene and rites with water. The neolithic was still early for significant juice production (early along the timeline of plant domestication). The steep hill down from the vantage point that is home for the array is not productive agricultural land, and, in truth, the whole area does not invite images of productivity - produce in need of transformation. Whilst the pressing of grapes may have occurred within history, in epochs post the Roman invasion or within a medieval optic, the problem remains - how to find the source of the scale of pressing and then answer the question: why so many basins in number and form? Many of the basins seem to repeat scales that are not optimal for grape and fruit pressing, being too small or shallow. An appropriation of some pre-existing basins during the timescale of the adjacent medieval Priory may have occurred, but with wind crisp off the cusp of the hill, and monolithic stones readily available far and wide, the site does not seem to be ideal for agricultural transformations and one must start to assume that the majority origin may be pre or proto historical.

"Several rocks have curious basins and channels carved into them, which are thought to possibly be sacrificial tables. There are stories of sacrifice, and there being channels cut in the rocks for the blood to run through. Several of the rocks seem to have been cut into what are possibly thrones."

 

Animal sacrifice does occur as a cultural constant throughout the world, and the basins' flow points may have been to channel the blood of the sacrificial beast. This does not seem to answer the question : why so many basins and why so many forms of basin? Might there have been a basin allocated for the sacrifice of every different type of farm animal and gibier? There are so many basins that the list of different animals would be raggedly merging with spurious sources of desperation food like frogs and worms. Such persistent and lucid stone carving for sacrifice might leave a trace, and archaeologists may look for iron deposits in tucked away sediments of adjacent dry corners. I don't think that they will find anything, as the basins are relaxed in their disposition and, whilst some are clearly visible, many.are not positioned for formal ritual display. The basins are known locally as 'écuelles du diable' or Devil's bowls. There is talk of Druidique sacrifice, and these cultural frames are most probably best understood as coming from the 'mist' that makes up anti pagan slur, late medieval cabalistique appropriation and even 19th century role-playing theatrical druidism..

 

The last two possible uses are for hygiene and rites with water. I will first merge these two potentials and later discuss them apart. Speculation about the use of water and milk exist. Both flow, and both can carry ideas in and other ideas away. They can come from sacred sources and sacred animals. A third element that might be visualized is that of 'steam'. Imagine a large fire near the adjacent spring - a hundred meters inland from the hill's cusp. The fire heats up dense river stones - a common sight for prehistoric inductive heating. These hot stones are placed onto a flat carry flagstone that has been bordered with clay to stop the rocks from rolling. The ensemble is carried by two men on a leather sling in a formal, or informal parade, to the main vista and its range of basins. Pots or leather bags of sacred water are also carried on shoulders. The down lip of a basin is jammed with greased leather and water is poured onto the 'deep' hot stones that have now been distributed over selected basins. The steam would be dramatic for a spiritual rite, or cleansing and sensual for an Epicurean social solidarity.

 

One site might include both religious and 'social' utilization -

selected according to date.

 

A lake now covers the area around the water source, so vestiges of fires may be difficult to find.

 

Many of the monoliths would retain repeated heat and might have been encapsulated with simple leather tents. Sweat houses exist from Irish protohistory and have been credibly imagined as an ice age potential. Where there is steam, there is near boiling water and herbs can infuse with the smell of mint, pine and thyme potentially adding further range to the site's pallet of expression.

 

A second input is as follows: if a basin has been smoothed with a sooted black clay, and gently skimmed with a thin layer of water, then, when the water stands still, it will be a mirror for those looking down. This may explain some of the simple ground level basins - good sizes and measures adapted for one or two reflecting faces.

Educating and training the masses is expensive and troublesome, but the Ludgonian Industrial Union has the answer, Neuro-Net Processors. This is from the 1960s and is an example of the first integrated circuits manufactured, using Jean Hoerni's planar process, which is fundamentally the semiconductor process still used today in all ICs.

 

The 3-input NOR from Fairchild became the basic building block of the Apollo guidance computer, designed by MIT and built by Raytheon. It used 5,000 3-input NOR ICs and was the first major application of ICs.

This issue is an abbreviated report compared to most of its predecessors. It can be attributed to many things not the least of which is reader interest/input. Passing of Denis Jent—Independence Yankee-1948

 

For two decades I got to know Denis Jent pretty well and he pulled off something no one has ever done in my home. He smoked a cigarette inside it, although it was in the basement. That was over 15 years ago and it won’t be replicated.

 

Over the course of holding KOM league reunions certain participants performed their various talent shows. Bill Bagwell was known for doing his routine of a guy whose suit was too large. Howie Hunt and Bernie Tye majored on their comedy acts and Jent had a card trick that he performed each time the group met. That is what he was doing in my basement the day he pulled out a cigarette. He was coming to the conclusion of the card trick about the same time he was headed for a nicotine fit. So he and the guests begged to allow him to continue and that is how there was smoke in my house.

 

Jent was a member of a very talented 1948 Independence Yankee team that featured future big leaguers, Al Pilarcik and Jim Finigan. He accomplished some pitching feats at both Independence and Joplin that lasted one year until Bob Wiesler came along and topped them. Jent was high on the New York Yankee list of prospects when he reported to Phoenix, Arizona for a training session in early January of 1950. During the first day of the session, Yankee coach, Jim Turner, told him to get his glove and go to the mound. Jent explained he hadn’t thrown a pitch since the Western Association season concluded the previous September. Turner told him he was a young man and it wouldn’t hurt him to pitch without warming up.

 

Well, to make a long story, less so, Jim “The Milkman” Turner was wrong. Jent told me more than once he knew his arm was not the same after that afternoon stint in Phoenix. He tried hanging on for a while even after the Yankees, who ruined him, released him. But, after his baseball career concluded he worked as an iron and steel worker where he did the dangerous and “exciting” tasks of riding the beams skyward in constructing skyscrapers.

 

My first meeting with Jent came in 1995 when he drove to Columbia, MO from Indianapolis, Ind. for a program I was conducting at a local library during the morning and a picnic in the park that evening. I couldn’t believe anyone would drive that far for such an event but he and scores of others did likewise. That is when the revival of the old KOM league was on. Each year we had “official” reunions he would make the trip and upon arrival he’d mention that he had encouraged Al Pilarcik to come with him but could never talk him into it.

 

At our first meeting he told me he had something that he wanted to give me. It consisted of his left-handers Mort Cooper, Rawlings baseball glove and his spikes. I wondered at the time what I’d do with that stuff but kept it around and other guys kept adding to the cache so that now I could probably outfit a baseball team with equipment. Time was shared with Jent during the good and bad times. The bad times consisted of the death of first wife and one of the good times was when he remarried. Another of the good times was when he called to say that he had quit smoking and was feeling better for doing so.

 

My heroes of the KOM league who later became my friends are exiting the stage at a far too frequent pace. When I learn of the death of a former player one of the first things I do is to send a note to their former teammates. The problem now with doing that is there aren’t too many left with which to share that news. And, in sharing the news you take the risk that those former teammates still around are in no state of mind to remember the deceased. Yep! My efforts are closing in on being futile.

Obituary of Denis O’Neal Jent

 

Denis O. Jent , 86, went home to be with the Lord on August 19th, 2016. He was born on January 17, 1930 in Warren County, Kentucky to Joseph and Alice (Gammon) Jent.

 

He retired from Ironworker's Local 22 and was a member of the Mooresville Masonic Lodge No. 669 F & AM, the Murat Temple, and the Scottish Rite. A George Washington High School baseball pitching standout, Denis was drafted by the New York Yankees upon graduation in 1948 and played in the Yankees farm system for 8 years.

 

Denis is survived by his wife, Judith Jent, daughter Sheila Crawford, daughter Carla (Paul) Baase, son Daryl Jent, 12 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Patricia (Leeper) Jent, his son Michael Jent and his son-in-law Carlie Crawford, his brother Norman Jent.

 

Madison Avenue Funeral Home, 5141 Madison Avenue, Indianapolis, with the services starting at 1:00 p.m. Friends may call from 11 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on Monday, August 22, 2016 at G.H. Herrmann

De ja vu

 

Jack Morris sent me the obituary on Denis Jent and to follow that up sent this note. “John, for once, I’m sending you an article on someone who’s still with us.”-http://www.swtimes.com/sections/features-columnists/pam-cloud/ex-ballplayer-goes-distance.html

 

After reading the aforementioned URL I wondered if Jack was telling me, in a kind manner, that I had made an error in the previous Flash Report. In that report I stated that Robert Field was the lone surviving member of the 1946 Miami, OK Blues. That is a correct statement considering only the regular season. However, if a team made the playoffs that year they could select one player from another club who wasn’t in the playoffs. The idea was each team should go in as strong as possible and if they had an injured player they could bolster their chances of competing by taking on a “fresh face.”

 

Thus, Miami selected Gerald Cross from the Bartlesville Oilers. Miami lost in the first round of the playoffs and it turned out the Pittsburgh Pirates didn’t want him in 1947 so Miami placed him on the reserved list for 1947. Meanwhile Fido Murphy of the Topeka Owls switched his KOM franchise from Chanute to Miami and he didn’t want Cross either. When the 1947 season rolled around Cross wound up at Chanute the town Murphy had ditched in favor of Miami. Such were the ways of minor league baseball. Cross didn’t last the season at Chanute and also played that year in the Sooner State league.

 

After reading the article Jack Morris had sent, which was very early in the morning, more like late night, some things didn’t fit. I read it once more and thought to myself “Self, I’ve read this before.” I knew that Cross was a member of the “Over 90” club and the article still had him in his 80’s. Upon closer scrutiny I found the article had been written in 2013. But, it was a good article and although I believe I shared it three years ago it is still good enough for a rerun. Especially, this week, when I’ve experienced a slow news cycle. So, here is the old article.

Baseball has consumed much of Gerald Cross' life.

 

But these days, he prefers to watch it or read about it rather than playing it and coaching it.

 

At 88, Gerald hasn’t spent much time on the diamond lately unless it was catching a Razorback game or watching family members play. Gerald had just returned home from work yes, I said work at age 88 — when I darted by Albert Pike and Hendricks this week.

 

Gerald’s early years took him from a Lavaca ballfield to the minor leagues to a war combat zone.

 

Born in Greenwood and raised in Barling, Gerald went to school in Lavaca and played baseball for the local team. His first experience with baseball came at age 8.

 

I lived next door to a man who coached kids, explained Gerald, the widowed and divorced father of six and grandfather of 11. “He got me to play. The first time I got a uniform, I slept in it.”

 

He played American Legion baseball as a teenager, winning three state championships. Scouts were starting to take note of the competent catcher, and Gerald left for Florida in 1940 to play ball in the minor leagues until a war started. Gerald was drafted into the Army in 1941 during World War II and spent time in Germany with the 104th Timberwolf Division under the leadership of Maj. Gen. Terry Allen.

 

It was during the Battle of the Bulge they sent me to Germany,” Gerald explained, sitting in the living room of his home, with an open Bible on one side of his recliner and a copy of “The Last Boy: Mickey Mantle and the End of America’s Childhood resting on the nearby fireplace hearth. I was on the front for about a year in the Battle of the Bulge in Germany.

 

I’d hate to do it again, but I wouldn’t trade anything for the experience, he said, adding that he later joined the Air Corps.

 

Even during his service time, Gerald and other soldiers would form a team and play baseball. He just couldn’t get it out of his system.

 

Upon his return home, Gerald went back to playing baseball for farm teams for the St. Louis Cardinals organization and the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, making MVP two years. He was living the life of a rock star, surrounded by girls, parties and alcohol.

 

I spent $100 a day just partying, said Gerald, who married Alma in 1951 and raised six children with her. “I was living the wild life. I was still doing it the first time I got married. I got myself in a lot of trouble.”

 

Gerald said there was a time when he thought he was really going to make baseball a career.

 

There was a time I thought I was really gonna go a long way in baseball,” Gerald said, looking at a framed photograph of himself as a young 16-year-old baseball player. “But at a wild party one night, we had a little scuffle and the front part of the house was about 14 foot high. I got knocked off that night and landed on my shoulder. There went my baseball career.”

 

When baseball ended for him, he went to work at Auto Parts & Tire in Fort Smith.

 

I didn’t know a generator from a starter, but the man hired me, said Gerald, who settled down to provide for his family. “We changed the name later to Fliteline Motors. We got into the rebuilt motor business.”

 

The business grew internationally, with shipments all across the United States and into Saudi Arabia, Germany, France, Italy and Switzerland.

 

We were selling everywhere, he said, noting that they were among the top 15 in production in the country on motors. As cars changed, so did the successful business.

 

When his children started playing ball, Gerald started coaching. He coached his son’s American Legion team and was convinced to coach a men’s softball team, which he led to seven consecutive state championships and four regional championships.

 

We came in the top 5 in the world three times, Gerald said, pointing out the framed photos of the Fliteline Softball Team hanging on the wall above the couch.

 

If you can recruit right, you can play right, Gerald added, noting that a man shouldn’t take himself so seriously. “That’s my theory in anything. And if you can laugh at yourself, you keep it real.”

 

Gerald quit coaching shortly before Alma died in 1979; Gerald remarried and later divorced. He retired once from Fliteline but didn’t know what to do with himself, so he went back to work.

 

All these years and I’ve only missed 10 days, said Gerald, who has taught a Sunday school class at First Baptist Church for 51 years.

 

Will he retire again?

 

When I die, he said with a sly grin.

 

Where will my travels take me next week? Gerald’s dart toss says I’m headed to the area near Country Club and Valley Road, which is where Gerald used to live. I’m darting there next.

My first conversation with Gerald Cross took place nearly two decades ago. As with most of the guys the conversation encompassed their memories of former teammates. All the guys who ever played with Jack Bumgarner remember him for his athletic ability and some rather weird talents that no one else could do like stand on his head and pitch. You’d have to have seen it to believe it.

 

Not every guy who played with Jack Bumgarner knew he was the slightly older brother of James who shortened his last name to Garner and made a pretty good living in movies and on television. Cross was one of those guys who were shocked to learn that one of his 1946 teammates followed his brother into acting later in life. Most of Jack Bumgarner’s post baseball life and before joining the Screen Actors Guild was that of being a professional golf instructor.

Forty-three walks

 

I happened to run across the pitching feat of a guy called Alex Swails in the media of that era. When researching the year Bob Field was the batboy of the Hutchinson, KS Pirates In 1938 Swails walked 32 Ponca City, OK batters while pitching for the Muskogee, OK Reds and Hugh Kittle (that had to be Hub Kittle) of Ponca City walked 11. I read a lot of details about that game from different sources and wondered what became of Swails. That is when I learned the former pitcher from Kingstree, South Carolina went into the Army in 1942 and stayed through 1945. This is burial site. If you click here you’ll find his name wasn’t Alex, among other things.

What would be interesting to me is the pitch count for that game. He was a big side-arm pitcher and he must have been dragging at the end of that game.

 

Swails went to Clemson when it was an agriculture and military school. On Ancestry.com were some photos of him while he attended that institution.

vanaf nu wordt vliegen dus voorgesteld als het pronkstuk van vogels. vliegen is dus in deze context eigenlijk de controle hebben over vleugels. om direct de verbeelding aan te spreken stel ik een hele zwerm vogels voor, in een storm, valwind of ander soort turbulente luchtstromingen. een andere voorstelling is de koele vlucht van bijvoorbeeld een Albatros, die zo weinig mogelijk met zijn vleugels wiekt. natuurlijk is het zaak voor vogels om zo weinig mogelijk te slaan met de vleugels, maar, in geval van een zwerm in een storm, is het nodig, om, te vliegen!?

wind - and kite surfing are because of this articulation difficult. so difficult indeed, that, not all can do it; even if they try real hard. there is a kind of talent needed. right away crystals the point: sailing a sailing boat and flying an airplane are so much easier than actively articulating wings by hand, and, so, the brain of the human! skill brings energy, whereas we used to use brutal power. it is war against peace after all. much more effort is to do for peace, than for war, easy. war is stupid. this is the point all the way of course. everyone can sail and fly, but, it takes this special breed to wind surf. no fear and persistance are the first characteristics of this breed. it is therefore no surprise that wind - and kite surfing are not yet embedded in modern science, because, the art of flying is not for sale! the rich cannot buy this art, so, it is just not here. for once, this is the way the system is build up. make, sale. wind surf riggings and boards are, with respect to sailing boats, absurdly cheap and the speed to reach is no less than, 100km/hr, but still, we never see wind surfers in sailing boat regatta’s. so many times I have mentioned the revolution and this is why: sailing is going from, A, to, B. sailing was going somewhere, to make war and for trading. wind - and kite surfing are going nowhere but fast. regatta’s nearly exclude the half wind sailing course! so, there is no place for a wind surfer in regatta’s. the rules make low wind courses and high wind courses and exclude this way the entrance of wind surfing for speed. there was this song: street fighting man. the ever repeating lines were: there is no place for street fighting man. anyway, in the world the rich make is no place for wind surfing. time for a stand, call it revolution. the revolution for using the wind, notably the outcome of using oil and coals! by also planes, indeed. global warming led to more wind and higher sea waves, exactly the two to use by wind surfers. exactly, child’s play! how beautiful do you want to have it? avoiding war is to be done with child’s play. the grownups at the top rather play a different game of course, they rather go to war for oil, otherwise, their airplanes cannot glide and their cars would not run! the facts are that the population is now so big, that this world of the happy few is ending real fast. the thing is, in history these days, that we cannot make war any more over nothing, whereas the rich always had this trick in the sleeve to get rid of the young men, which were threatening the kingdoms. the rage could always be tempered, by taking the young out in a war with the neighbours. so, now the rich seek to go to war outside. bingo. game on. but, what if the children of the West gave Iran water, which is the result of burning, LH2? what if we use the human skill to make energy instead of war? and what about identical core of the message. walk away from the pyramids. paragraphs of the three most important books, where we all are called to walk away from the Pyramid? the problem we face as mankind is to straighten out a few tiny things. where in the Bible Moses doubts God, there is no doubt by Moses in the Quran. instead of going to war with Iran, we can ask for a debate about this passage. and then, the Quran was written long after the Bible was partly corrupted by the Catholics, so that it makes sense that God came back to tell the story again, in plain terms. this is the issue of modern mankind. the differences in interpretation of what God, Allah, meant. the problem is not oil, as I showed you earlier, the problem with energy is that the rich cannot buy the skill to make it. on the other hand is oil for flying for sale, so that energy is a matter of skill. mankind is brutal and this proves this point. flying, well, now called, air gliding an airplane is a brutal act. air gliding has in fact nothing to do with flying like birds do. so, making war over oil is that too. LH2 from marine water pumps water from the oceans to land. on land we need ( sweet - ) water and we also need the sea level to drop. wheeling to paradize.

wind surfen gebeurt met plastic, olie dus, en zet de wind om in snelheid. Massa maal snelheid is, energie. met energie hoeven we niet naar de oorlog te gaan. het ging om olie, toch? het ging er toch om dat het volk zijn brood krijgt? LH2, of, stikstof of, elektriciteit zijn energie, het tegenwoordige brood. olie is plastic en olie is de mechanische wind- en kitesurfer die energie opwekt. oorlog is zodoende niet slim, en vrede wel. dit komt doordat windsurfen niet te koop is en olie wel. WSDOT has marked a major milestone in its effort to replace the aging and vulnerable State Route 520 floating bridge. After 13 years of thorough analysis and input from thousands of people, the state has announced a preferred alternative for the I-5 to Medina: Bridge Replacement and HOV Project.

 

Major safety, transit and environmental improvements are in store for the SR 520 corridor from I-5 in Seattle across Lake Washington to Medina. The SR 520 preferred alternative takes key steps to get ready for future light rail, help manage traffic in the Arboretum and transform the future highway with a landscaped lid and median for a parkway experience.

 

The new floating bridge and highway will have six lanes, including two general-purpose lanes and a new transit/HOV lane in each direction. Adding transit/HOV lanes makes travel in the corridor faster and more reliable for buses and carpools and supports regional plans for completing the HOV system to reduce the number of single-occupancy vehicles.

 

Details are on our website, including images of what a new, larger landscaped lid at Montlake Boulevard would look like. The preferred SR 520 alternative directly responds to input we received from the public, the City of Seattle, the University of Washington and environmental regulatory agencies. Work continues on design refinements for the Montlake area with those groups as well as transit agencies.

 

Highlights include:

 

Room for future light rail: The bridge deck will accommodate future light rail trains and the west end of the floating bridge will have room for trains to leave the corridor and head to the University of Washington area. Pontoons could be added to the floating bridge in the future to carry the weight of the trains.

 

Less traffic in the Arboretum: The project removes the ramps that currently carry traffic directly to Lake Washington Boulevard and the Washington Park Arboretum. Westbound off-ramps instead will carry buses and general purpose traffic to 24th Avenue E. and continue on to Montlake Boulevard.

 

Buses and a lid at Montlake: New direct-access ramps will carry buses to a new landscaped park lid at the Montlake Boulevard interchange. The open space will extend from Montlake Boulevard into the Arboretum.

 

Parkway on Portage Bay: A slimmed-down Portage Bay Bridge will be built as a 45-mph landscaped parkway with a 6-foot-wide planted median. The 105-foot-wide bridge is narrower than the 154 feet previously planned in the 2006 draft environmental impact statement.

 

Identifying a preferred design keeps us on track for opening a new bridge to traffic in 2014.

We've sent two final reports to the governor and state legislators (High Capacity Transit Planning and Financing and the Washington Park Arboretum Mitigation Plan). This completes the requirements of Senate Bill 6392.

Floating bridge construction

  

Three teams have until spring to submit their bids and proposals for the new SR 520 floating bridge. Construction starts in 2012 and the bridge opens in 2014.

Overview

 

The I-5 to Medina: Bridge Replacement and HOV Project will replace the interchanges and roadway between I-5 in Seattle and the eastern end of the floating bridge.

   

Why is WSDOT pursuing this project?

About 115,000 vehicles and more than 190,000 people cross Lake Washington every day on the SR 520 floating bridge. It’s a key regional route for commuters and freight.

 

After floating for nearly 50 years, the four-lane bridge is often clogged by traffic and is showing its age.

 

The floating bridge pontoons are vulnerable to windstorms, and bridge support columns are vulnerable to earthquakes.

  

The End Result

  

The I-5 to Medina Bridge Replacement and HOV Project includes a new floating bridge and highway with six lanes, including two general-purpose lanes and one new transit/HOV lane in each direction.

 

The project also takes key steps to get ready for future light rail, help manage traffic in the Arboretum and transform the future corridor from Montlake to I-5 into a city parkway with landscaped lids and medians.

The Su-7IG (internal designation S-22I, NATO designation "Fitter-B"), converted from a production Su-7BM, had fixed inner portions of the wing with movable outer segments which could be swept to 28°, 45°, or 62°.

 

A fixed inner wing simplified construction, allowing the manufacturer to retain the Su-7 landing gear and avoiding the need for complex pivoting underwing hardpoints, and it minimized the shift in the center of pressure relative to the center of mass with change in wing sweep. The new wing also had extensive leading-edge slats and trailing-edge flaps. Su-7IG first flew on 2 August 1966 with V. S. Ilyushin at the controls, becoming the first Soviet variable geometry aircraft. Testing revealed that take-off and landing speeds had decreased by 50–60 km/h (31–37 mph) compared to the conventional Su-7.

 

The production aircraft was named Su-17 (NATO designation "Fitter-C", factory designation S-32) and was unofficially dubbed Strizh (Стриж, martlet) in service. Aside from the new wing, it differed from its predecessor Su-7 in having a new canopy and a dorsal fuselage spine for additional fuel and avionics. The Su-17 first flew on 1 July 1969.

The Su-17 saw several development steps, ending with the capable Su-17/22M3 and Su-17/22M4; the latter made its maiden flight in 1980 and the last variants were produced until 1990.

 

The Su-22M4 was also operated by the Soviet Naval Aviation (Авиация военно-морского флота in Russian, or Aviatsiya Voenno-Morskogo Flota, literally "aviation of the military maritime fleet") in the attack role, and from the beginning it was clear that the type had no sufficient capability for tactical strikes, esp. against sea targets. The Su-24 tactical bomber was an option, but it was complex and expensive, so that an upgrade of the Su-17 was considered. Primary requirement was a more capable radar/attack suite, tailored to a naval environment, and a better/more modern engine, esp. with a better fuel efficiency.

 

OKB Sukhoi started to take on the task in 1982. Effectively the design team tried to create a "Su-24 light" on the basis of as many proven Su-17/22 elements as possible. The project received the internal designation S-54D. Mission avionics were to comprise the ‘котёнок‘ (= ‘Kitten’) suite, a slimmed-down 'Puma' nav/attack system optimized for naval environment. This system complex consisted of two Orion-A superimposed radar scanners for nav/attack, a dedicated Relyef terrain clearance radar to provide automatic control of flights at low and extremely low altitudes, and an Orbita-10-58 onboard computer.

 

It soon became clear that the original Su-17/22 airframe with nose air intake and its central shock cone did not offer sufficient space for the radar scanners, so OKB Sukhoi had to modify the complete nose section in order to fit a large radome. This radically modified aircraft was designated T-54DM and presented as a mock-up in 1984.

 

To create sufficient room, the box-shaped air intakes were moved to the flanks and into the wing roots, what meant that the original NR-30 cannons were omitted. As a positive side effect, top speed at height and supersonic performance were reinstated since the Su-17M4's fixed nose cone was replaced by effective, adjustable splitter plates (not unlike the design on the Su-15 interceptor) in the new air intakes - getting the new aircraft's top speed back to more than 2.000 km/h at height. On the other side, the space for the original air duct around the cockpit could be used for avionics and other mission equipment, including a pair of more modern GSh-30-1 30 mm cannons in the lower front fuselage with a 150-round magazine each, which were more effective against ground and air targets alike.

 

Concerning the engine, the Su-17's Lyulka AL-21F-3 afterburning turbojet was to be replaced by the new and promising Soyuz R-79F-100 turbofan that yielded about 15% more thrust than the original AL-21F, even though fuel consumption was not much better and reliability remained a serious problem throughout the Su-18's career, how the type was officially called in service when it was delivered in early 1987 to the Baltic and Black Sea fleet.

 

When the aircraft was discovered on NATO’s satellite pictures, it was erroneously interpreted as a Su-22 export version for China (since the new nose arrangement reminded a lot of the Q-5 modification of the MiG-19 fighter), and some ‘experts’ even considered the Su-18 to be an interceptor version of the swing-wing fighter bomber. Anyway, since the Su-18 was still seen as part of the huge Su-7 family it kept its ‘Fitter’ ASCC code, with the ‘N’ suffix.

 

The Su-18’s service was short and ambivalent, though. The type was only introduced to the Soviet Naval Aviation, since its котёнок avionics suite was rather limited in scope and could not match up with the Su-24’s ‘Puma’ system. Additionally, the Su-27 multi-role fighter had become a more versatile option for the Soviet Air Force, which had begun to face a severe re-structuring program.

 

Positive asset was the fact that the Su-18 did not require much flight training – no trainer version was ever built and training was done on Su-17M3 two-seaters. On the other side the single crew layout coupled with the complex weapon system made flying and weapon operations at the same time rather demanding, so that the Su-18 could hardly play out its full potential.

 

Only about 120 Su-18s were produced until 1990, and in a move to eliminate single engine strike aircraft from its inventory the Russian Air Force already retired its last Su-17M4 along with its fleet of MiG-23/27s in 1998, while the Su-18 in Naval Aviation service soldiered on until 2000. Some countries like Peru and Indonesia showed interest in these aircraft, but all were destroyed in the course of the bilateral START (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) treaty.

The kit and its assembly:

This whif creation was triggered by a discussion at whatifmodelers.com, circling around an updated/improved Su-17/22. I remembered a photoshop creation of a Su-17 with side air intakes (from an A-4) and a nose radome (probably from an F-14) in USAF-markings – a potential way to go, even though the graphic design had some flaws like the subsonic air intake design or the guns’ position right in front of the intakes. Well, “Let’s tackle that, and do it better”, and the Su-18 is my interpretation of that idea.

 

The kit the Su-17M4 from Smer, a kit that has nice proportions and good detail, but nothing really fits together – expect lots of putty work! From that basis only few things were actually changed or added:

• Nose intake replaced by a F-15 radome

• Side air intakes with splitter plates come from a PM Model Su-15

• The following ducts are a halved part from an Art Model Bv 155 underwing radiator

• A new seat had to be used in the cockpit

• Main wheels from a Me 262 replace the OOB parts

• New twin front wheel which retracts backwards now

• For the anti-shipping role, a pair of Kh-31 missiles and the launch rails from an ICM weapon set

 

My biggest concern were the air intakes and the wide ducts, since these had to be blended into the round Su-17 fuselage. For the intakes, the wing roots were cut open and the Su-15 parts inserted. The Bv 155 parts were a lucky find, as they matched perfectly in size and shape – otherwise I had had to sculpt the ducts from 2c Putty. The arrangement still looks a little brutal, but the side intakes look plausible.

The nose radome posed little problems, even though I worried for a long time that the nose section could look too bulbous for the rest of the aircraft. But finally, when the stabilizers were in place, everything looked more balanced than expected.

 

Changing the front wheel from the original, forward-retracting single-wheel arrangement to a rearward-retracting twin wheel creation also helped selling the new proportions.

 

Painting and markings:

Very early I had the idea to keep the Su-18 in Soviet/Russian service, but it should feature an unusual, yet plausible paint scheme. The Soviet/Russian Navy actually used the Su-17, but only in tactical camouflage, with green and brown upper surfaces and light blue undersides. While browsing for alternatives I came across the Su-24 (also flown by the Navy regiments), and their typical light grey/white livery was what perfectly fit my story for the aircraft.

 

Said and done, the model was painted in Humbrol 167 (RAF Barley Grey) from above and painted with the rattle can in a vintage VW car tone called “Grauweiß”, a very dull white. Later, panels were emphasized through dry-brushing (Humbrol 127 and 130), plus a light black ink wash and more overall dry-brushing with light grey tones. Also, some panels were painted all over the fuselage, as well as an overpainted Red Star on the fin which was replaced by a Russian Flag decal – a common experimental practice in the early 90ies, but the idea did not catch on.

 

Speaking of decals, these mostly come from the very complete Smer decal sheet. Personal additions are only the flags on the fin and the Russian Navy emblem on the nose.

The cockpit was painted in typical psychedelic cockpit interior turquoise, while the landing gear and the wells were painted in blue-grey (Humbrol 87); the wheel discs were kept in bright green (Humbrol 2) – a nice contrast to the rest.

The drop tanks were painted in Aluminum, for some overall contrast, and the Kh-31 missiles according to real-life pics; the launch rails were painted in Russian Underside Blue, again for variety and contrast.

 

While the finish of the model is far from perfect, I am satisfied with the convincing result. You could certainly place this aircraft in line with other, typical Suchoj types like the Su-7, -15, -17 and -24, and it would not look out of place! A highly effective whif, IMHO. ^^

A lot of people ask that question.

 

Before a military airplane is created live ( aluminum, steel, rubber, secret materials etc.) there will be a wooden mock-up made of the intended aircraft just to start working out some of its' design aspects.

 

From a hands on, three-dimensional standpoint.

Not the whole airplano. Only the cockpit… where special attention to detail is paramount because this is where the pilot lives. Reacts to the enemy. Or simply flies patrol. At a thousand miles-per-hour.

 

All the minutiae were worked out here. Before everything got stripped out, (seat, electronics, control wheel) it was pretty much a functioning cockpit. And if there was a problem in design, location of a gauge, etc., it all got settled right here.

Housed at the Brampton Museum (Peel Heritage Museum) as an ongoing Avro Canada exhibit, it resides at 9 Wellington Street East, less than a quarter mile from my house.

 

But that's not the clincher.

 

Nope.

 

THE GUY who designed the cockpit was Wilf Farrance. While he now lives in London, Ontario, he used to live at 14 Crestview, in Brampton, which, by road, is just one mile and about a hundred feet south of the museum. And this exhibit.

 

His baby.

 

THREE MONTHS after Black Friday, Wilf went south to Martin Baker where he became plant manager. But had he stayed put, in retirement, he could have simply strolled up to the museum to see his former "workbench".

 

Nah, you're right. Too painful.

 

So few artifacts remain from the Arrow program… that every single one causes us to pause, and think.

 

What if?

 

It has taken us 60 years to leap back from the Avro Jetliner cancellation, and Bombardier has done well in the commercial aircraft segment…

 

But Canada never bounced back in the military aircraft sector.

 

Once the Arrow was murdered, we never went back to the military stuff. We bought it, but never again did we produce it.

 

But it is museum pieces like these that remind us of the tenaciousness, the intensity, and the success of Canadian ingenuity in the early part of the Jet Age, in the late 1940s and 50s. It was a new frontier, folks. New, to everybody. And a small country like Canada (through research and development) could be as successful, and even more so, than some of the more established players in the aviation field ( Britain, the USA, France).

 

Even if, only, for a time.

 

So, meander your way up to that there museum, and look at this artifact, and many other Avro Canada ones. Each will leave you with an impression of how grand the aeronautical endeavours, and undertakings were there in Malton in the 50s. You'll note at Avro Canada, their strong employee social network, this carefree and serious "country" within our country, that would eventually have such a huge impact on our tiny, tiny, nation.

 

And of, course the world around us. Because nothing is ever done in a vacuum, folks.

 

What was happening at Avro Canada was noticed worldwide. And what was learned there has been passed on through, to later aircraft design.

 

The BAC TSR.2 benefited heavily from the Arrow program. No less than 15 design inputs snafu'd from Avro Canada engineering data given to BAC for free, for FREE, by the Canadian government! Stupid is, as stoo'pid does—

 

The Concorde, and its Olympus engines both benefitted from our Canadian successes at Malton (YYZ). More freebees. To any who just asked! First "acquired" from Avro Canada, and next from Orenda Engines (the engine subsidiary of Avro Canada).

Today I installed a dual battery system for the car to run a 12 v portable fridge/Freezer. The100 A/hr AGM battery is charged by D250S charger via the car alternator when the motor is running in addition to the fridge being powered. When the motor stops the AGM battery powers the fridge. I tend to think the 6K6 output pentode tube is faulty, since it's receiving a nice clean signal at the input, but it's outputting garbage. It's either that or the coupling cap C-15.

 

Both traces have been AC coupled at the scope. The 5V/div range on the bottom trace is wrong -- it's actually 50V/div, but the Tek scope doesn't recognize the HP probe as a 10x type because it doesn't have the bayonet pin indicator.

I decide to integrate the master controller via a freeduino or arduino AVR board. Just now the master was maded via a FPGA DE1 board for test but this board is to big to use into the field. Because the slave software run now perfect on the freeduino board, I will now transfert the master controller also to the AVR software. But on the master controller I need a lot inputs and outputs. Therefore I use the serial option to drive the 2x16 char LCD display and a few leds. As input I read also via de SPI lines all the swithes, rotary encoder and dipswithes from the userinterface frontplate. The remote TX module RFM12B is again connected to the PORTC of the Freeduino board. On the PortB I have now 3 extra TTL flash outputs. So the master can drive also 3 direct flashes. There is also a X-sync input signal from the camera to drive the master controller and to generate the correct signals on the remote wireless RFM12B module. Into the next days/week I will give the results of this unit.

STK600 board is setup for the tests, a breadboard is ready for the LCD display, leds, encoder and RFM12B module. I write now first the LCD display software so that the parameters are show on the display. AVR controller is the Atmega168, 20 pins Dip version. CLK speed = 16Mhz external xtall.

The hardware is ready on the breadboard together with the STK600 developement board. LCD display connected via the 2 x 74HC595 ICs works and also the leds. Data is diplayed on the LCD. The 3 local flash outputs on this master are also ready. The next days I will continue to put the RFM12B module as transmitter. Thereafter the tests will be done together with the slavemodules.

On an extra Arduino board I will drive 8 highpower leds just near the flashes to see into the dark. So just wait a few weeks for all this new tools....

Master software is running now, LCD display show all this values. Powerlevel can be change on every flash but also on a groep flashes. Results stay on the LCD display. Every flash can be enabled or disabled. The groep offset value have now 6 steps. This mean, the steps are added to all the flashes levels into the groep. 2 different groeps are supported, one Master groep (4 flashes) and one Slave groep ( 3 flashes). But the number of flashes into each groep is a parameter into the software code. The number in now limited by the I/O pins on the Atmega168 or Atmega328p. Now the step change is near 0.3 EV. On each channel you can select the type flash connected at the output. So if you have a SB29S ringflash you just need to change the type for the connected channel on the display. All flashes are connected via a small type phone connector 3.5mm stereo on one side. The other side is the SC-27 Nikon connector. I just divide every SC-27 cable in 2 parts. So now I have 6 cable to connect 6 Nikon flashes.

 

Now I have to build this hole Master into a nice small box. The display works on 5V, the other chips are running on 3.3V. Power will be delivered via a small 9V NIMH battery.

 

The next task is now to test the previous build Slave unit via the RFM12B modules. Software on both sides are ready for test now.

I found a nice box 150x80x46mm to put all the components. Just started to mount all the parts into the box. Shema is now drawing again to be inline with the unit into the box. 4xAA batteries stay into the bottom of the box and give 5.25V for the LCD display. A 3.3V voltage regulator make the 3.3V for the Atmega328, the serial devices and RFM12B module. Into a few days I will show new photos of this unit. Sofware is running now and the flashes can be full programmed in TTL mode at any powerlevel. On the Atmega168 I need only 1844 bytes of program space. No need for any interrupt routine. Resolution for the flash timing is 2 usec. All flashes are fired central to the reference timing of the flash with the highest power, so this give really the best results for veryhigh speed captions. The remote flashes are also centrered with the master flashes. In total 7 flashes can be connected to one master and one Slave unit.
