Not much that beats having your kid smile.

The submarine USS Torsk was built at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Kittery, Maine, and commissioned at the end of 1944. She came to Baltimore as a museum ship in 1944.

Lightship "Chesapeake," Baltimore. At one time there were more than 110 coastal "stations" where US lightships were assigned. These were replaced gradually with buoys, offshore towers and even onshore lighthouses. The last active US lightship was decommissioned in 1985.

my shots of the ship never turn out very good, but I'm pretty happy with this one.

...Otaku Madness. Cosplayers galore. This is what the lobby at the Baltimore Convention Center looks like when Otakon is in town.

The Baltimore Aquarium was started in 1978 and opened in 1981. It was built as a centerpiece of the redevelopment of the business center and the Inner Harbor. It is now the largest tourist attraction in Maryland (by annual attendance).

The name was changed to "National Aquarium in Baltimore" in 1979, before opening. The Baltimore facility and the older National Aquarium at Washington, DC operated jointly from 2003 to 2013, when the Washington facility was closed.

(I'm "almost" certain that the animal pictured here is a seal, not a sea lion, but I do not know the variety, e.g. harbor seal.)

Baltimore once had an image of an unattractive city - and no, I'm not writing this (only) because I was born in Philadelphia (!).

This image dates back to the Great Baltimore Fire of 1904 February 7 - 8, which destroyed much of central Baltimore. Within an area of about 60 hectares (140 acres, 70 city blocks), more than 1,500 buildings were completely destroyed and an additional 1,000 suffered heavy damage.

(The estimated total of property damage was $100 million, about $35 billion at today's prices.)

The rebuilt city center was described as "unattractive" - and similar terms - for years thereafter, and this was attributed typically to the fire. (I have seen such narratives in publications dating back as far to the 1920s - and before.) The success of the Inner Harbor redevelopment attracted worldwide attention and brought about a sharp change in the city's image. Today, in spite of lingering problems typical of large US cities, Baltimore has become a tourist destination. This is a remarkable transformation from years past.

Inner Harbor, Baltimore, 1988. Visible near left (background) is the USS Constellation, a sloop-of-war launched in 1855. She was built at at the Norfolk (Virginia) Navy Yard, and was decommissioned and recommissioned several times before final decommissioning in 1955.

Redevelopment of the historic Inner Harbor area was carried out from the early 1960s to the 1980s. The deteriorated piers and warehouses were demolished and replaced by parks and plazas, surrounded by leisure destinations, hotels and office buildings.

(I have fading memories of what the Inner Harbor area looked like "before" redevelopment, and the difference between "then" and "now" is remarkable.)
