Our weather today is a bit fierce. After a week long cold snap of -35C temperatures never going above -15C we went to -5C overnight and woke up to snow squalls that are readily formed in the milder temperatures. Those who live in balmy climes don't understand the phrase "it's to cold to snow." I couldn't resist going out on the frozen lake and trying to capture the bluster - I've never quite succeeded in showing those who don't understand northern Canadian winters what a snow squall is like and this image doesn't even begin to capture what it's like - multiply by 100 and you will get an inkling. Photographing wind is a challenge never mind heavy snowfall and cold but ... once more unto the breach ... perhaps one day I will make the photo that is in my mind's eye. :)

P.S. This is a phone photograph - I was reluctant to take my 'real camera' out of the bag.

Very late and scarce this year I have an inkling there may be a mink on the prowl as juvenile dippers and yellow wagtails seem few and far between this year lets just hope their just running a bit late.
This was taken today after a break in the rain /Taken walking Badger and only 1 quick shot don't want to upset the parent birds no picture is worth that.

I've been informed that, at over 900 years, this is one of the oldest churches in England. I had no inkling of this when I stood here to take a few pictures. A friend has suggested the church may be mentioned in The Domesday Book, but I haven't been been able to confirm this.
He who does not know this, or relish this, has no inkling of the nature of this country :-(

A shot of the old agricultural ruin on the Kirkstone Pass Road.
This was the first inkling that my day out in the Lakes wasn't going to be as anticipated. Expecting a grey day I was astonished when I emerged from the mist and clouds just before reaching this point on the drive up out of Troutbeck. After this the drive down to Ullswater was clear. The mist was swirling all around this point and I took a number of shots as the clouds parted.

Whenever I come here to this beautiful spot I can't help but think of those 3 climbers (two Swiss, one American) who died climbing this mountain last Spring by an avalanche, I wonder if they had an inkling of their precarious outcome beforehand would they still have climbed that day. Doesn't ruin the beauty of it, just reminds me the mountains always have the last word.

I took this dramatic shot of the "Struggle", which is the name of the top section of the road out of Ambleside up to the Kirkstone Pass, as I drove up the Pass having come through the cloud inversion engulfing the Western Lake District.
You can see the cloud down in the Windermere Valley with the iconic twisting Kirkstone Road descending into the murk. It was a very close call wether to post the colour version of this or the mono, but I thought the mono was slightly more dramatic. This was the first inkling that my day out in there Lakes could get interesting!
