For the Macro Mondays theme: inheritance

I inherited the love for nature with all her beauties from my parents. We used to walk a lot in my childhood in the countryside and every time we discovered a new flower or a little animal. Even a few drops of rain wouldn't stop us. It were good times and I'm still enjoying the little things ;-)

an instinct inherited from our nomadic forebears or by those local conditions which so frequently make travel advisable, it is certain that once the desire is temporarily gratified the disease becomes permanent :-)

Somehow I inherited old books from my family of origin. Such as this one, printed in 1900, entitled "The Complete Poems of Sir Thomas More; Collected by Himself with Explanatory Notes". The thin piece of tissue or vellum protects an old photo or lithograph of the man himself.

Do you remember when vintage or antique books were assembled with such care?

We inherit the European lifestyle, specially like France people. We need a nap after lunch. Today! I'm a middle guy, had a Starbucks Coffee...it means no nap!

Middachten estate is first mentioned in a charter in 1190. Middachten has never been sold, only inherited. The current owner is Count Zu Ortenburg. The first mention of house Middachten dates from 1315. It is certain that a new castle was built in the years 1350-1360, which was largely destroyed in 1673 by French troops. The then owner Godard van Reede, son of the lord of Amerongen, had the castle extensively renovated in the years 1694-1697, after a design by Jacob Roman, the court architect of Willem III and with Amerongen castle as an example. The courtyard of the medieval fortress was converted into a staircase and closed by a richly decorated stucco dome. After that, a formal garden was created between 1700-1725, inspired by the gardens of Versailles.

Middachten is a complete estate with forests, farmland, farms and a fully furnished castle surrounded by beautiful gardens.

Because of Corona, I couldn't get any closer and couldn't take pictures of the beautiful gardens. The gardens will be open to the public again in early June. That's why I'll be back soon.

The legend of the four stripes is the legend that explains the origin of the flag and the shield of Catalonia, first appeared in 1551 in the second part of the General Chronicle of Spain.

The story explains that the origins of the flag are in Guifré el Pilós, the last count of Barcelona appointed by the Frankish kings, and the first to give inherit their domains, initiating the Dynasty Counts of Barcelona.

Specifically, is told that the four stripes were created after a battle against the Normans, when the Frankish king dip his hand in a open wound of Guifré el Pilós, and then he passed all four fingers above the golden shield of the Count of Barcelona. With this act was created the shield of the House of Barcelona, symbol of the new sovereign conquered, and, over the years, this four red stripes become the Catalan flag.

Now, the Catalan flag is composed by 4 red vertical stripes, that are the blood of Guifré el Pilós, and between each red stripe, there is a yellow one, that symbolizes the shield of the Count.

Interesting Larger. I think it's worth exploring.

Early for Christmas? Let me try to explain ... it's rather complicated.

I inherited these as Christmas Roses, guaranteed to flower over Christmas, as they did.

Then they started to flower around Easter, and I was told they must be Lenton Roses.

Sooo ... if they are Lenton Roses ... they are early.

All clear?

They were the devil to photograph, and I have to admit to picking this one to do it -- it was minutes before it was withered. It is so beautiful, but my previous attempts have been pretty unsuccessful. (See farm1.static.flickr.com/46/127042282_18f53d241e.jpg )

I inherited this old suitcase from my grandparents and use it as a cat bed. Linus used to love this suitcase but Tofu only sleeps there occasionally and Cleo not at all.

All alone as the sun kissed the sea, and the glow on the cliffs faded. Let the dancers inherit the party is fine, as i'm always dancing across the beach looking for wonders. It's the new album by British Sea Power.

Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! ❤️❤️❤️

I inherited this ring from my grandmother and have kept it safely hidden away for many decades now. How silly of me, I should have it altered to fit my smaller fingers and wear it!

We inherited this great, old white picket fence with our new plot at the community gardens. Happy Fence Friday, my friends, have a great weekend!

This one is for Macro Mondays' assignment "inheritance". It is a very small part of a link bracelet I inherited from my beloved grandmother. Unfortunately she died in 1980 of cancer. The bracelet contains several different stones. I am not sure, but I think this is amber.

Have a wonderful Monday everyone and thanks for your views, comments and faves!

HMM!

I inherited this butterfly/dragonfly pin from my mom. I wear it on my winter coat lapel (sometimes my hat). I found it again this week as I was digging out my winter woolies. Mom's been gone three years now...hard to believe

This is my very last piece, inherited from the amount of jewellery found in Clare's flat. Each one of her friends was also invited to choose a piece in her memory.

I was always in awe, not only of the jewellery which Clare created, but also of the way she photographed it. I believe she had a light box, which I do not have.

This was actually my preferred choice for Macro Mondays this week but I wanted a better shot. Any background I used was reflected in the metal and the concave shape of the item made it really difficult.

If anybody has any tips to help in photographing jewellery, I'm listening..... My settings are in the tags + quite a bit of 'faffing'!

We inherited Ollie and his brother Nigel and sister, Callie a number of years ago when a friend passed away. John always called him that "My beautiful Ollie!" I think of John ever day that Ollie is with us. He is such a dignified cat. He doesn't bother anybody, and mostly, nobody bothers him . . . with a few exceptions! Needless to say, you don't mess with Ollie for long. He is a big cat! His brother, Nigel, however, is ever bigger, while sister Callie is diminutive. :)

Until the very last minute, I have been totally stumped for music for today's Saturday Self-Challenge .

Then I suddenly remembered my mother's musical jewellery box which I inherited.

Gutenberg Castle (German: Burg Gutenberg) is an intact castle in the town of Balzers, Liechtenstein, in the centre of the municipality of Balzers, the southern-most municipality in the country. Gutenberg is one of the five castles of the principality and one of two that have survived intact until the present day.

Unlike Vaduz Castle, Gutenberg Castle does not serve as a residence of the princely family of Liechtenstein and is open to the general public as a museum. The castle lies on a 70 metre high free-standing rock near the centre of Balzers and is accessible via a street and road known as Burgweg.

The first written record of the castle's name dates to 1296.

The castle hill has been inhabited since the neolithic period. Archaeological excavations have uncovered several prehistoric artifacts, including the 12 cm (5 in) Mars von Gutenberg figurine, now on display in the Liechtenstein National Museum.

Gutenberg Castle began its existence as a medieval church and cemetery on a hilltop. In the early 12th century, the cemetery was cancelled and fortification of the former church structure slowly began with the addition of a ring wall, forming a simple, roughly circular keep. During the 12th century, several additions followed, particularly the creation of the main tower by raising the height of the existing keep. Later on, the tower was fitted with merlons. In the 12th and early 13th centuries, the castle was owned by the lords of Frauenberg, a noble family from the Swiss canton of Graubünden. After the death of Heinrich von Frauenburg in 1314, the castle became the property of the House of Habsburg. It was then used primarily for guarding the borderlands between the local Habsburg-owned territories and those belonging to the independent Swiss cantons.

At the turn of the 15th century, the castle underwent extensive new construction works as part of an initiative by Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I to repair the damage inflicted upon the castle by a siege in 1499, during the Swabian War. Gutenberg Castle was equipped until 1537 with a drawbridge, which had to be dismantled due to storm damage that year. It was never replaced. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the castle ceased to be used for military purposes and was damaged by several fires. It was still being used as a residence around 1750. After a fire in 1795 that greatly damaged Balzers, the castle ruins were used as a source of building material for the reconstruction of the town. The town castle purchased and slightly repaired the castle in 1824, then sold in 1854 to Princess Franziska of Liechtenstein.

The castle underwent substantial restoration between 1905 and 1912, under the supervision of its new owner, Vaduz-born architect Egon Rheinberger. This restoration added a number of new structures and buildings to the lower parts of the castle (see ground plan in references section for more details). After Rheinberger's death in 1936, the municipality rented the castle for various events and guests, until it was offered for sale in 1951. In 1979, the castle was purchased by the Principality of Liechtenstein for state and museum purposes. However, the last of the former private owners held her inherited rights to live in the castle until her death in 2001.

The bailey of the castle is open to visitors free of charge all year round. The castle's chapel and rose garden, reconstructed in 2010, are accessible free of charge every Sunday between 10:00 and 19:00 during the summer tourist season (1 May – 31 October). Guided tours of Gutenberg Castle and its renting for weddings and cultural events are available only during the summer tourist season and need to be arranged in advance by appointment.

Bexhill or Bexhill-on-Sea is a seaside town situated in the county of East Sussex in South East England. An ancient town and part of the local-government district of Rother, Bexhill is home to a number of archaeological sites, a Manor House in the Old Town, an abundance of Edwardian and Victorian architecture, and the famous De La Warr Pavilion: today a centre for contemporary art – which has featured the work of Andy Warhol, Cerith Wyn Evans and Richard Wilson amongst others – and an auditorium, where Bob Marley had his first UK appearance and has since seen performances by Elvis Costello, Goldfrapp, Ray Davies, Years & Years, Patti Smith and Laurie Anderson.

The first reference to Bexhill, or Bexelei as it was originally called, was in a charter granted by King Offa of Mercia in 772 AD. It is recorded that King Offa had 'defeated the men of Hastings' in 771 AD. At this time, the term Hastings would have referred to this whole area rather than the town itself as it does today. In the charter, King Offa established a church and religious community in Bexhill.

During the Norman Conquest of 1066 it appears that Bexhill was largely destroyed. The Domesday survey of 1086 records that the manor was worth £20 before the conquest, was 'waste' in 1066 and was worth £18 10s in 1086. King William I used the lands he had conquered to reward his knights and gave Bexhill manor to Robert, Count of Eu, with most of the Hastings area. Robert's grandson, John, Count of Eu, gave back the manor to the bishops of Chichester in 1148 and it is probable that the first manor house was built by the bishops at this time. The later manor house, the ruins of which can still be seen at the Manor Gardens in Bexhill Old Town, was built about 1250, probably on the instructions of St. Richard, Bishop of Chichester. St Richard's Catholic College, the local Catholic school, was duly for said bishop. The Manor House was the easternmost residence owned by the bishops and would have been used as a place to stay while travelling around or through the eastern part of their diocese. There were often disputes between the Bishops of Chichester and the Abbots of Battle Abbey, usually about land ownership in this area. In 1276 a large portion of Bexhill was made into a park for hunting and in 1447 Bishop Adam de Moleyns was given permission to fortify the Manor House.

In 1561 Queen Elizabeth I took possession of Bexhill Manor and three years later she gave it to Sir Thomas Sackville, Earl of Dorset. The Earls, later Dukes, of Dorset owned Bexhill until the mid 19th century. Their main residences were Buckhurst Place in Sussex and Knole House in Kent.

In 1804 soldiers of the King's German Legion were stationed in barracks at Bexhill. These troops were Hanoverians who had escaped when their country was overrun by Napoleon's French Army. As King George III was also the Elector of Hanover, he welcomed them and they fought as part of the British Army. At about this time, defensive Martello Towers were built along the south east coast, some near Bexhill, in order to repel any French invasion. In 1814 the soldiers of the King's German Legion left Bexhill, eventually playing an important part in the Battle of Waterloo the following year. The German troops had been here to protect Bexhill from the French. However, many of the local people were actively trading with the enemy by way of smuggling. The best known of the local smugglers were in the Little Common Gang and the most famous incident was the infamous Battle of Sidley Green in 1828.

In 1813 Elizabeth Sackville had married the 5th Earl De La Warr, and when the male line of the Dukes of Dorset died out in 1865 she and her husband inherited Bexhill.

It was the 7th Earl De La Warr who decided to transform the small rural village of Bexhill into an exclusive seaside resort. He contracted the builder, John Webb, to construct the first sea wall and to lay out De La Warr Parade. Webb, in part payment for his work, was given all the land extending from Sea Road to the Polegrove, south of the railway line. Opened in 1890, the luxurious Sackville Hotel was built for the 7th Earl De La Warr and originally included a house for the use of his family. In 1891 Viscount Cantelupe, his eldest surviving son, married Muriel Brassey, the daughter of Sir Thomas and the late Annie, Lady Brassey of Normanhurst Court near Bexhill. The Manor House was fully refurbished so that Lord and Lady Cantelupe could live in style as Lord and Lady of the Manor. Finally, the 7th Earl De La Warr transferred control of his Bexhill estate to Viscount Cantelupe. When the 7th Earl De La Warr died in 1896

Viscount Cantelupe became the 8th Earl De La Warr. At this time he organised the building on the sea front of the Kursaal, a pavilion for refined entertainment and relaxation. He also had a bicycle track made, with a cycle chalet, at the eastern end of De La Warr Parade. These amenities were provided to promote the new resort. Meanwhile, many independent schools were being attracted to the expanding town due to its health-giving reputation. The railway came through Bexhill in 1846, the first railway station being a small country halt situated roughly where Sainsbury's car park is today. This was some distance from the village on the hill. A new station, north of Devonshire Square, was opened in 1891 to serve the growing resort. In 1902 the current railway station was opened and a Bexhill West Station was built for the newly built Crowhurst Branch Line.

1902 was the year that Bexhill became an Incorporated Borough. This was the first Royal Charter granted by Edward VII. Bexhill was the last town in Sussex to be incorporated and it was the first time a Royal Charter was delivered by motorcar. To celebrate the town's newfound status and to promote the resort, the 8th Earl De La Warr organised the country's first ever motorcar races along De La Warr Parade in May 1902. The town was scandalised at this time by the divorce of Earl De La Warr.

Muriel had brought the action on the grounds of adultery and abandonment. She was granted a divorce and given custody of their three children. Muriel, with her children, Myra, Avice and Herbrand, went back to live with Earl Brassey at Normanhurst Court. The 8th Earl De La Warr remarried but was again divorced for adultery. He also suffered recurrent and well-publicised financial difficulties. At the start of the First World War in 1914 the Earl bought a Royal Naval commission. He died of fever at Messina in 1915.

Herbrand Edward Dundonald Brassey Sackville became the 9th Earl De La Warr. He is best known for championing the construction of the De La Warr Pavilion, which was built and opened in 1935. The 9th Earl also became Bexhill's first socialist mayor. He died in 1976.

The Second World War caused the evacuation of the schools and substantial bomb-damage to the town. Many schools returned to Bexhill after the war but there was a steady decline in the number of independent schools in the town. The break-up of the British Empire and in particular the Independence of India in 1947 hastened the process. Most of the schools were boarding and catered largely for the children of the armed forces overseas and of the colonial administration. Although the number of schools decreased, many of the parents and former pupils had fond memories of the town and later retired to Bexhill.

ATSH: Flesh Tone

We inherited many Indian artifacts when we bought our cabin in the mountains many years ago. So glad I kept them since they make great photo props. This image was 3". I cropped the handle to meet the guidelines.

I inherited this lovely brooch. A date is inscribed on the back within a small heart. 13/7/1853

Inherited four-axle units from the BN-ATSF merger take off from the BNSF Northtown Yard with interchange traffic for the Canadian Pacific. This train will be swimming upstream as plenty of other traffic will get priority for precious track space over in St. Paul east of West 7th Street and Westminster Junction.

I welcome any input about this type of toy and perhaps how long ago it was made.

I inherited this necklace from my mum. It isn't anything special and not valuable, but it's so versatile going with almost everything I wear for an evening out or having friends round for a meal.

Thank you for your favourites. :O)

Bouillon in the province of Luxembourg, Belgium.

Although it was mentioned first in 988, there had been a castle on the same site for a much longer time. The castle is situated on a rocky spur of land within a sharp bend of the Semois River.

In 1082, Bouillon Castle was inherited by Godfrey of Bouillon, who sold it to Otbert, Bishop of Liège in order to finance the First Crusade. The castle was later fitted for heavy artillery by Vauban, Louis XIV's military architect in the late 17th century.

Years ago we inherited a lovely collection of glass perfume bottles. Studying them takes me back to my grandparent's house. The three sided mirror that was part of my grandmother's dressing table was always entertaining. However, I often found myself tracing my fingers over the glass perfume bottles sitting on the table. Here's to treasured memories! This link shares a brief history of glass perfume bottles if you are interested: blog.cmog.org/2014/09/02/a-brief-history-of-the-glass-per...

I inherited this wood carving from my parents when they moved to assisted living. Although not Buddhists, my dad did study it and Buddhist teachings helped him lead a better, more peaceful and mindful life. I treasure this piece of art for its symbolism.

my daughter and granddaughters will be going home today , but we had a brilliant few dats together. yesterday we visited Castell Coch and had great fun in the rain, and later in the afternoon we all tried to do a watercolour and ink sketch of the castle. It was lovely all being creative together. The rain seems to have stopped now so things are looking up. Let the Dancers Inherit the Party is by Sea Power and was on their setlist the other night and sounded wonderful.

I inherited this Tiger lily (Lilium lancifolium or Lilium tigrinum) from my MIL. Its tall and bold orange and black blossoms are a mid-summer garden treat.

I inherited this orchid, a Dendrobium delicatum native hybrid-cultivar but its heritage seems a bit uncertain because of native, nursery and domestic hybridisation and cultivation. It was struggling in a pot hanging from a tree and struggling. After repotting and shelter it grows and flowers sporadically. The blooms, about 20mm across, open in sequence from bottom to top. This is the first bloom of the current modest crop.

Leaning haphazardly against each other, this rock formation towers over the Wadi Rum visitor centre. It proceeds to a gradual peak with the highest pillar at its front. The clear, rounded shapes of the pillars standing side-by-side allowed it to inherit its name. Because of it shapes, this mountain look like many things. A collection of lopsided pillars, a procession of figures fanned out behind their leader, the bulwark of a great ship sailing through an ocean of sand. The modern name is taken from TE Lawrence’s memoir of his time in the desert. Though only five of these pillars are immediately visible, the other two are around the side. It is possible to walk around the formation but the best view is from a distance near the visitor centre. The original Arabic name is Jebel al-Mazmar, which means “The Mountain of the Plague.”

This site is one of the most amazing hiking spots in the area. The trail is one of stark contrasts: on one side, flat sands spread long distances, the very picture of the dry, yellow desert of the imagination in summer. In winter and spring, it is scattered with low grasses and bushes that animals come to graze on. Keep your eyes peeled and you might even spot a camel or two! On the other side, the mountain leaps from the ground in a sheer wall of sandstone and granite. A walk along the base of the rock is done easily at your own pace. Upon approaching the foot of this majestic mountain, tilt your head back and take in the enormity of the pillars. Massive as big-city skyscrapers, these natural formations speak of something ancient. A testament to this place and its withstanding thousands of years of both human and environmental turmoil.

After my dad's death in 1998, I inherited 3 brown-paper-covered exercise books. Inside, in his beautiful cursive writing, was his diary account of his WW2 service, including time as a prisoner in camps in N Africa, Italy and Germany.

In 2017, a good friend and I published his story. A conscript, in his early twenties, just 4 months married, I feel my dad writes with a light touch, seeking the humanity in any situation.

Of his experience at the work camp at a cement factory in Cossebaude near Dresden :

"I think it was probably the best months I had as a PoW - in Germany - whilst I was working in the factory. You also had that sense of freedom during the day. You weren't hounded by a guard. You were put in the care of a German worker, and as worker to worker we got on reasonably well. I managed to learn German and after a time I managed to make myself understood, horrible though it my have sounded."

My royalties from the publication are donated to the Red Cross: my dad felt their food parcels sent to the camps were key to the survival of many prisoners.

Regrettably he cannot know of readers' reviews of his mémoirs:

I know there's nothing really in focus in this photo, but I love the golden sun and the reflection on the web. I have a hard time shooting directly into light, it blinds me! I need to practice that. ;)

better, if you have the time

I inherited this gold bracelet from my Mum, she was left it by my Nan (her mother-in-law-).

ANSH 116 (2) something you inherited

The Human inherited this vintage chest of drawers from her grandparents. It makes a purrfect new napping spot for me. Honestly, it's great for naps! I know the Human is jealous. She'd kill for a nap. I know you are jealous too. But I ain't sharing!

My father inherited this watch when his mother died. It was given to his father by a man named Alan, who clearly felt that he owed his life to my grandfather, then aged 19, for disobeying orders, staying with him in the face of enemy advance, and getting him to the field hospital after he was seriously wounded at Gouzeaucourt, France in 1917.

(305/366) My bug hotel is taking shape (I just uploaded a photo of the first tiny inhabitants). You may remember the 2 awful old lamp shades we inherited in our kitchen, look closely & you'll see them put to a better use! Today I gathered up fallen leaves from the Turkey Oak & Acer to fill gaps between the logs. Now I just need a couple of air bricks or failing that a few dozen pine cones to stuff inside the gap at top. This is how it looked 2 weeks ago when I first started constructing it www.flickr.com/photos/juliek1967/29706511193/in/dateposted/

I inherited several orchids after my friend Doug died last year. This is their first bloom. Just the right amount of rain and afternoon light today.
