The Local Alternatives for Global Development: Rediscovering Libraries event took place on October 3, 2012 in Washington, D.C. The event brought together an estimated 400 practitioners, funding organizations, and innovators from around the world to have a conversation about alternative development approaches and to build partnerships.
The event kicked-off with a special roundtable discussion between USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah and former Chilean president Ricardo Lagos. Other featured speakers included technology innovator Esther Dyson and representatives from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Christopher Brooks, U.S. Delegation Chief for the United States, reports in during the opening ceremony of Combined Endeavor 2013.Combined Endeavor 2013 prepares nations to collaborate, plan and execute complex command, control, communications and computers (C4) systems in crisis response and combat operations. The exercise began in 1995 to build partnerships between nations. Nearly 40 NATO, Partnership for Peace and coalition partner nations are represented this year.

#4718, The Computer lab, block C, The Lord Byron School, Leninakan (now Gyumri), Armenia. At 11.41am on the 7th December 1988, Armenia was devastated by an earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter Scale. It is thought a minimum of 30,000 people died. The epicentre was near Spitak (pop. 30,000) which was almost totally destroyed. Not far away was Leninakan (pop. 240,000) where 70% of all buildings were left either collapsed or unsafe. 31 of the 37 schools were destroyed. The British Government paid for, and British companies equipped, a new school to replace one which had taught in English. It was designed by the Dept. for Education and Science's Architects & Buildings Branch. The management contractor was John Mowlem working with consultants, Buro Happold, Building Design Partnership and Gleeds. These photos were taken shortly after it was officially opened by British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher.
