This week’s picture shows spectacular ribbons of gas and dust wrapping around the pearly centre of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 1398. This galaxy is located in the constellation of Fornax (The Furnace), approximately 65 million light-years away. Rather than beginning at the very middle of the galaxy and swirling outwards, NGC 1398’s graceful spiral arms stem from a straight bar, formed of stars, that cuts through the galaxy’s central region. Most spiral galaxies — around two thirds — are observed to have this feature, but it’s not yet clear whether or how these bars affect a galaxy’s behaviour and development. This image comprises data gathered by the FOcal Reducer/low dispersion Spectrograph 2 (FORS2) instrument, mounted on ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) at Paranal Observatory, Chile. It shows NGC 1398 in striking detail, from the dark lanes of dust mottling its spiral arms, through to the pink-hued star-forming regions sprinkled throughout its outer regions. This image was created as part of the ESO Cosmic Gems programme, an outreach initiative to produce images of interesting, intriguing or visually attractive objects using ESO telescopes, for the purposes of education and public outreach. The programme makes use of telescope time that cannot be used for science observations. All data collected may also be suitable for scientific purposes, and are made available to astronomers through ESO’s science archive.

The existing design of the Piazza del Campidoglio and the surrounding palazzi was created by Renaissance artist and architect Michelangelo Buonarroti in 1536–1546. At the height of his fame, he was commissioned by the Farnese Pope Paul III, who wanted a symbol of the new Rome to impress Charles V, who was expected in 1538. This offered him the opportunity to build a monumental civic plaza for a major city as well as to reestablish the grandeur of Rome. Michelangelo's first designs for the piazza and remodeling of the surrounding palazzi date from 1536. His plan was formidably extensive. He accentuated the reversal of the classical orientation of the Capitoline, in a symbolic gesture turning Rome’s civic center to face away from the Roman Forum and instead in the direction of Papal Rome and the Christian church in the form of St. Peter’s Basilica. This full half circle turn can also be seen as Michelangelo’s desire to address the new, developing section of the city rather than the ancient ruins of the past. An equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius was to stand in the middle of the piazza set in a paved oval field. Michelangelo was required to provide a setting for the statue and to bring order to an irregular hilltop already encumbered by two crumbling medieval buildings set at an acute angle to one another. The Palazzo del Senatore was to be restored with a double outer stairway, and the campanile moved to the center axis of the palace. The Palazzo dei Conservatori was also to be restored, and a new building, the so-called Palazzo Nuovo, built at the same angle on the north side of the piazza to offset the Conservatori, creating a trapezoidal piazza. A wall and balustrade were to be built at the front of the square, giving it a firm delineation on the side facing the city. Finally, a flight of steps was to lead up to the enclosed piazza from below, further accentuating the central axis.

This bandstand was dismantled and put into storage. Years passed and it was believed to have been scrapped. It was eventually tracked down and with help from the Heritage Lottery fund it was beautifully refurbished and put back in Saughton Park in Edinburgh.
I worked in the park in the late 1960s for a few months after leaving school.
It's difficult to put into words just how good it was to see it again today.

Ein Yongnuo YN685 in einer SMDV Speedbox fast direkt von oben. Ausgelöst mit Yongnuo Fernauslösern. Dies gilt so für zwei Bilder: einmal das normale Porträt und einmal habe ich ein Deko-Skelett auf gleiche Weise fotografiert.
Da der Blick des Deko-Skeletts somit passte, konnte ich problemlos die Knochen über das Gesicht legen.

Since the look of the decorative skeleton fit, I was able to place the bones over the face without any problems.

What's Cooking? I know I haven't been around much lately, but I wanted to share that it is with good reason: for the past few weeks I've been working with a large publishing house on a series of cooking encyclopedias! Woo-hoo! And even though I'm working with a group of folks (set assistants, editor, art director, etc.), it has been sooooo much work. Thankfully, I wasn't hired to do the actual cooking shots (those are done in a sweaty, 4-kitchen studio space)...I'm doing more of the culinary and beauty shots...such as the chapter head pages shown above (for demo purposes here, I added the "herbs" type myself—the final graphical elements will be included in the design phase).
Note: I promised myself that 2011 would be the year that I would share more info, techniques & tips with my Flickr friends, and in doing so, hopefully make my stream more than just about my photography. And that started with the inclusion of my EXIF and Strobist info with each shot, which I'm glad many of you have found useful. :) But with large projects like these, it seems like a great time to offer more detailed information...lighting configs, set-up shots and set sketches. To that end, below is a page from my always-handy moleskine that I use to frame out shots, lighting and compositional elements. It's crucial when conveying concepts to a design team and to ensure that print margins, bleeds and areas for typographical elements are maintained when shooting. Hope this is helpful!

Grenada Distillers Limited the island’s best-known and largest distillery and one of the most interesting historical sites. The factory has been in operation since 1937, and is situated in the southern part of the island, in the Parish of St George.
When you arrive you would be welcomed by one of our friendly and knowledgeable tour guides, who would explain our history and all the different processes and stages of making our fine rum. You would learn of the distilling process from sugar cane, syrup and molasses, to rum, and also the aging, blending and bottling processes of making rum. On tour you would also get the opportunity to discover old steam engines, some dating as far back as 1886.
The tour of the factory lasts about fifteen minutes, after which you would be escorted to our Hospitality Center, where you will see our unique Barrel Furniture and an interesting display of the Clarke’s Court products. Last but not least, you are invited to sample our award-winning rums at the sample bar. You would be given recipes on different ways you can mix our rum and truly appreciate the taste of our fine products.
I guess a rum distillery is a must for any visitor to the Caribbean.
